@DonnaF - I hadn't thought about navy. I'll try that!

@clearlyclaire and aida - Angie's post was what got me thinking. I'm keeping my eye out for sales and waiting for the discount cards I get in the mail from time to time. I figure I can build it up slowly. Most professors I've seen wear business casual to casual clothes on a day-to-day basis, but like y'all said, I can break the suit into it's separate pieces and wear them as business casual.

@rachylou - Horticulture. It's not terribly conservative, but all of the candidates for professor/specialist positions have worn suits.

It might be worth getting a suit that has jacket, trousers, and skirt all three. I love your plan of a no-jeans day once a week! I did that when I first wanted to break free of jeans and it was really a great help; before long those other pants will feel just as comfortable, if they fit well Did you see Angie's recent post about Express suiting? It is a good way to start out if on a budget, for sure. If you're going to be working in a field that requires suiting, then it may be worth picking up both a gray and black (or navy) suit there to start off with. Those would likely also play well with the other pants/jackets you've already got. And black pumps are certainly a good basic to have, but unless you will be working in a conservative field I wouldn't say that black is a must have (unless it's one of your core neutrals, that is). You are definitely on the right track with your plan!

Rats I lost my reply!

I think a skirt suit is always appropriate for a job interview. unless you'll have to do something physical that can't be done in a skirt. A soft black, charcoal or navy would all be nice. Have you seen Angie's blog post on Express? You could buy matching separates that could be split apart once you get hired. Good luck with your wardrobe refresher!

Would you consider a navy suit instead of black? To my eye, black can be very harsh, and I'm wondering if navy might go better with your wardrobe, not to mention coloring, esp. if you separated the pieces.
I've been working on my style goals and items I need to round out/build necessary capsules and I'd like some input from all of the stylish ladies and gents out here.I'm thinking (and praying) that I'm in the last year of my program and I've hit kind of a funk, style-wise. While I love my style, causal gamine classic, I feel like I need to change-up a few things and build the all important interview capsule. So, without further ado...

1) Now that I finally have several nice short sleeve button downs, it's time to wear them. My goal is to wear one a week. And I've gotten rid of most of my old t-shirts except for 3-4. I'm only going to wear those on field days.

2) I need to break my dependence on jeans. From now on, I'll have one jeans free day a week. However, my denim pencil doesn't count as jeans because I think it looks a bit dressier. It doesn't have the front button and zipper like a pair of jeans do, and it zips on the side.

3) Holy moley - I need a suit. I have some awesome pants and a couple of cool grey blazers (which I hope aren't too dated), but none of those combine nice enough for an interview. I've been attending job candidate seminars and while we are pretty laid back dress code wise, everyone I have seen still wears a suit. I think a solid black one would be the most appropriate. If money was no option, I'd love to get a grey one as well. I probably should also try to find a couple of nice button downs that would match. I think this, along with a pair of nice black heels would be a good capsule. or at least the beginning of a good capsule.

When I'm talking about a suit, I'm meaning pants and jacket. I haven't seen any women give these seminars in my department. Would a skirt suit be appropriate for an interview? If so, it'd be nice to get a skirt that matched the black (and in my dreams, grey) suit.

What do you all think? Am I on the right track? Any comments, suggestions or anything else is appreciated.
