viva...great to "see" you again....hope 2018 is less stressful than it sound like 2017 was!
great set of goals. love the idea of creating detailed and documented travel outfits.
i'm still loving skinnies (althought most of my skinnies are straights), but i'm moving towards higher rises...which is making me rethink some of my tops....
Continue working toward the most intentional purchasing possible. --this goal is part of my 2018 goals as well...and was part of my 2017 goals....i do think i did better last year, but hoping to do even better this year. one thing last year did drive home to me, some people are stress eaters, i'm a stress shopper, and i need to work on that

Angie: Thanks for chiming in. I will definitely be posting some pictures as I get outfits together. I would love to hear some thoughts on the jeans which are really fun.

Lisap: Can you share your pictures?

Sally: It will be very interesting to see where the clothing lands (travel vs home vs both). I am frankly not inclined to purchase any more "travel only" or very professional items -- in terms of buying, I am leaning toward more versatile pieces. But, in my closet right now are several things I am sure will be in the travel outfits exclusively.

Smittie: I keep eyeing that leopard coat .... April, maybe?

Tex: True about what is actually high-waisted. I have to try on to know what it really is and if it will work for me.

Christina: Today I started moving some items into a Finds travel capsule. It's definitely helping prepare me for creating the perfect 10.

Karen: The data will set you free! (Kind of love that.)

I think a tight travel wardrobe is a great idea - you might find some of these pieces stay as travel only ones and others work well for working from home or casual life - but knowing what works takes a whole lot of stress away.

And yes wear your lovely dresses. I have been making a conscious effort to wear my summer dresses as they only feel right for about three months....I have to make the most of the season...

You have convinced me to pay more attention to higher waisted jeans and pants....and to go and measure what my favourite fits actually are. I wonder if this has been why finding a great pair of jeans has been so difficult lately. Anything labelled high-waisted scares me , but lower rise jeans look absolutely horrible when you aren't flat-stomached anymore and I'm often yanking them up , which is not great .I'll have to shop with this in mind now. And regarding the work/travel outfit capsule (I want 5 outfits) , I started creating mine the other day, and am taking pictures of the entire outfit down to the jewellery and keeping them on my phone. One down, 4 more to go

Love your goals and I would steal most if them if mine weren't already too long.

I'm an fascinated by the idea of tracking, as a very analytical person, but probably won't take the plunge until I'm further on my goals.I think it will bring you lots of insight. I learned a ton and (and successful lost over 20 lbs) by fully committing to tracking my fuel/burn rate on My Fitness Pal. The data shall set you free! Keep us posted on what works to track and what you discover.

I am also embracing wider legs, and agree with Toban about the shorter top situation, an extra challenge for us short waisted gals (although your tucking always looks great!). I just bought a 10" rise pair of pants and really like them.

Well change is good, right? Keeps things interesting. I think your goals seem spot on for you. Skinny jeans are not something I wear too often I guess - well at least they don't seem "skinny" because I always size up on them so they are more slim than skinny. I've also found a slightly higher rise to be preferable these days. For me, 9" rise has been pretty good. I have a pair of KUT jeans that are just perfect in that regard but I've never found a duplicate of them - even after ordering the same style name and size.

I think some sort of tracking is good. I don't do it formally but keep mental notes of how often I wear items. I think I'll add more about this in my own Style Goals post so I don't hijack yours.

Footwear remains hard for me too. I want comfort but I crave style.

Viv, great to see you back on the forum. LOTS of change - and these changes DO affect your style. Good job identifying them and great plan going forward. Manageable and actionable.

Sooooo, we need to see the new pants you like to wear. (FUN). And you have to make sure you have the right tops and footwear to go with them in order to create complete outfits that make you feel fab. Check in with your personal figure flattering priorities and create the proportions that make you feel best. We can help you if you like.

Emotion is GOOD, and you know I'm a fan. Fashion and style is sad, boring and unenjoyable without a good dose of emotion. But the emotion has to be organized in order for it to work for your style. When your mind is right - everything else follows. I'm sure you will get there and have a fabulous 2018. VERY exciting wedding news. Much love to you. xo

That makes sense. You look so good in those cropped styles! They're a good alternative for you to the ubiquitous skinnies. I always start craving new denim styles when I see many of you wearing them so well, but I don't feel I look so good in them unless I wear a substantial heel, and I'm not inclined to do that as much these days as I used to. The wide leg sailor jeans look cool too! I'd like to try some wider leg pants but nothing stiff or heavy, and I haven't seen anything around that looks like it would work for me. Pants are so hard for me -- and I've sworn off of shopping for any pants or jeans until after I lose some weight. ;-)

Janet and Suz: So yes, ladies - skinnies are still there and have been useful for dog-walking and tucking into boots. (Like today, 6 inches of fresh snow, wearing skinny jeans tucked into snow boots for travel to the salon.) And also, I have to admit to not dog-walking when the temp is below 20 and windy (we do have a small yard, and I can send them to daycare for exercise as needed) -- so the last couple of weeks have had less dog-walking than usual. When I do walk, I tend to wear a long parka, thermal running tights, and snowboots or Blunnies with yak-trax.

Outside of dog-walking, and in addition to the skinnies, I am wearing a couple of pairs of longer flared cropped jeans with booties (and with socks!). (Mostly, the black Madewells and a pair similar to these Anthro ones but with less fringe and all the same denim tone). Also, I have a pair of straight cords from FP that I've been wearing a lot. (See second photo. They're called skinny but I sized up one size and they fit more like straights.)

If weather allows I also wear these new Sideline cropped wide legged jeans (1st photo) Michael bought me for Christmas, also with booties, or my wide leg sailor jeans (when the ground is dry).

I had the same question as Janet! What do you wear for dog walking? I can't imagine anything but my thermal gear pants (in really cold weather) or my skinnies tucked into boots (in less cold more regular weather).

I still wear skinnies, though my favourite "skinnies" are actually slim BF jeans or "slouchy" skinnies. (They are a bit skinnier vs. slouchy on me now due to weight gain, ahem.)

I think it's a great idea to define your travel/ work outfits. I have never done this exactly, but I used to have a sort of "city" capsule that crossed over some with my "regular wear" capsule but included unique elements and dressier pieces.

Vivian, I'm curious what you are wearing instead of skinnies. I find skinnies so practical for wearing with booties and boots in colder weather (tucking in, rolling/cuffing). Are you wearing crops, or just straighter legs? I'm kind of wondering when straight-leg, unrolled/uncuffed jeans will come back in style.

Much to my surprise, I have a couple of 10-inch rise jeans in regular rotation now too -- but I never tuck anything anymore. My belts are all going totally unworn.

I'll be curious to see how tracking works out for you. It's something I'm always tempted to do, but never follow through on.

So glad you posted! Thanks for sharing.

Your goals are very thoughtful and fit your lifestyle assessment. I suspect that, as you transition from skinnies to other leg silhouettes, you will need some changes in your top silhouettes to go with the wider legs. The more flowy, longer length tops that go with skinnies are often overwhelming with wider legs. You might find you want cropped tops with the higher rises or more slim fitting tops with wider legs.

I've been in and out of YLF (lurking!) for the last few months, but I've been very energized by all the style goal posts and I hope you won't mind one from me too. I feel a deep need for this kind of assessment because 2017 meant a lot of change for me that ultimately affected my wardrobe and my sense of style. We moved to a small house in the city (half the closet space meant paring back, more dog-walking meant more casual looks, etc.), I started helping my daughter plan her wedding (distraction, expenses, etc.), and the second half of the year I experienced a major work slowdown (budget).

This work slowdown with very little travel after July, coupled with moving and renovating, had the strongest effect because I really lived in the most basic casual clothes for months. And I sort of forgot how to dress professionally in a way that feels most me. Now, work is back up and I have a lot of travel on my plate, and I don't know what the heck I am doing. So, I am hoping this review will help.

The major style accomplishments/changes from 2017:

I'm finally almost over skinnies (I still have three pairs, but that is all, and I cannot imagine buying another pair)

I've fallen for higher-rise pants - 10-inch rise, in the right cut, can work well even on my short-waisted body (not sure how but it's true).

I still love cropped pants with a flare or wide leg.

I purchased several dresses and wore them more often overall than in years past, but not enough given how many I have/bought.

I still struggle to find footwear that is both comfortable and fashionable. I love a small block heel (up to 2") but really have trouble finding shoes that hit all the sweet spots for me. I am picky and my feet can be fussy.

Goals for 2018:

Create a true travel capsule, with 10 defined outfits that are suitable for travel. (Thank you, Lisap!) (Defined meaning: head to toe, photos taken, and posted where I can consult with them when packing. I need to think in outfits.)

Follow this style transition that is unfolding. Moving from skinnies to some wider legs does alter my silhouette and I need to think more about what this might mean.

Continue working toward the most intentional purchasing possible. I am always driven by emotion, which I think makes sense with fashion, but I can be easily swayed by someone whose style I admire. Slow down!

Track purchases and track wears of new items. Tracking is not something I am excited to do, but understanding how often I am wearing new items feels like it could be very helpful in supporting my goal to be more intentional.

Wear my dresses. As soon as the snow stops falling.

Thanks for listening!
Vivian
