I'm smiling at your comment about the hordes of boys. As a mother of sons I know that I escaped the style counselling that many daughters provide their mothers. In my case it was to my detriment and is one of the reasons I'm here. I'm nodding in recognition at your style journey. Such small things that make such a big difference.

I like your analysis. It's important to think about choices as experiments and then to evaluate if they succeeded or failed so you can take something away and get better. I've realized that I have to have a balance of modern/trendy and feminine/ladylike in order to be happy. Too far one direction and I don't feel pretty enough, too far the other and I feel like I'm playing in a costume.

Hi Nova --

Echoing the thoughts above about your discoveries.

I think figuring out what feels "right" in terms of personality, lifestyle, flattery, and purpose is such an ongoing process (and then we have the "right-lite" as in how to balance appropriateness-for-occasion with what feels best).

I'll look forward to hearing how your experiments are going!

You have done a lot of thinking and have learned some very important lessons! It sounds as if you're in a much better place with your style.

Like Sveta, I share some of your discoveries:

Pixie, check! Skirts -- especially pencil or tube -- check! Structure -- check!
Selective accessories -- check!

Over the past year I have been experimenting with various aspects of my style. For background you should know that I grew up the only girl in a hoard of boys and now only have boys myself. I didn't really learn about style and such until discovering YLF. And boy have I been learning a lot! Some things I have learned over the past year of experimenting:

1. I grew my pixie out into a just below the chin red bob. Result: I hate it! I constantly feel frumpy and it is heavy. I will be going back to my pixies and crops next month. I feel more polished and put together and just more me at this length. I also think a color change is in order.

2. I added more skirts to my pants only wardrobe. Result: Straight skirts aren't very flattering, but pencil skirts work well. Nothing too short or I am uncomfortable no matter how it looks. Going to try a full skirt next.

3. I also added new dresses: Result: Fit and flare is lots of fun. Before I often only wore dresses that surrendered the waist. I found a sheath I will try this fall and am on the hunt for a body con to try. I had lots of growth in this area, accepting my body and not trying to hide it.

4. Learned that I am craving more structure. I couldn't figure out what was bothering me about some of my perfectly good outfits. I discovered that swapping a blazer or structured topper for the cardi completely heightened my happiness factor. Who knew?

5. Being selective in accessory choices is important. Over the past year of experimenting I have found I want to be more selective in my choices. I also want them to be less fussy. Before I would load up an arm with lots of bangles and beads, now I prefer a watch and a cuff. Simple.

Thanks for reading this rather long post. I appreciate you sharing in all the discoveries I have been making and for all the suggestions, encouragement, and advice I have received as I make this journey.
