So I thought I would come back to this - although it's only been a week or so (I thought it was much longer ago than that!) I've already achieved at least one goal - brown boots YAY!!! - and am working on the others. I made my list for closet purging, and I think the items I recently purchased do fall into the categories I outlined. The pink top is very vintage, the leather pants are very "ME" and I absolutely love them can't wait to wear them, and the floral top... ok well maybe I should have added "floral" to the list of patterns I love and want more of!

Can't wait to get rid of more stuff ... never thought I would say that!

I'm right there with you. No more buying for the sake of buying. I will buy when I NEED something, and of good quality. I've also purged a bit, but need to get rid of a few more stuff but may have to wait until Spring though.

I should add to the list that I need some lighter weight jackets/blazers for summer. All of the ones I got on my pre-new-job-thrifting spree (3/$1 sale!!) are heavier, wool or wool blends.

Some lighter weight tops for layering would be good too... most of my work tops are long sleeve button ups or sweaters. I do have a decent collection of sleeveless camisoles, but at least half of them are turtlenecks so probably only good in spring or fall.

Great list. I especially liked the phrase "Focus my purchases on key items I've wanted for a while but forfeited in lieu of more, other, cheaper things". Too often, I have wasted my clothing budget on cheap things found on sale. This forced me to forego purchases of things I knew I would love. I am following your general idea, but in my case, I will make it a point to avoid shopping sales. Too often I came home with something that was coup salewise, but not a great addition to my closet.

Great plan. Investing in quality shoes was one of the best moves I did for my wardrobe. I love my Frye boots and they are ten years old. They still make the exact same boot.

Sounds like a great plan. I am sooo bad on not wanting to invest in pricey shoes/boots - at least until the past year when I've bought two pairs of boots at not-cheap prices and have worn them a lot. Definitely has started to change my thinking about CPW.

Yes to #1! In my head I refer to that as the 'fabulosity rule'. Basically no settling for the sake of filling a hole. If I don't feel faulous in it then I won't buy it.

I love your focus on your key purchases too.

I am totally with you on #1. I will not buy another thing just because it is on sale, unless I just love it...

It's taken me a while to come up with, but I think I have solidified my style and shopping goals. I like the idea of having them clearly defined, as hopefully that will prevent any of the buyers remorse I experienced last year. Without further ado, they are:

1. Only buy pieces I truly deeply love. Not because it's on sale and fits into my budget, not because it looks great on someone else. This has been my downfall in the past, but no more.

2. Completely purge my closet of any items I don't truly, deeply love. Unless its a one of a kind piece and/or I'm undecided because it's newer and I haven't had the chance to wear it much. Not the things I keep holding onto just to "have more clothes." I'm not 16 OR poor anymore :)

3. Focus my purchases on key items I've wanted for a while but forfeited in lieu of more, other, cheaper things. Those would be:
- brown riding boots
- a couple quality pairs of neutral heels; definitely need black, perhaps navy, grey or nude. I'll have to evaluate what I'd wear them with to see which will be most useful
- pieces with more vintage of a feel like a-line skirts and dresses, very feminine tops
- items of the plaid, leopard, polka dot or striped persuasion

I think this about covers most of it.
