Marilyn, I forgot to mention that I also had to return a "navy" dress that was actually purple. There was no mistaking it for navy, either. It was purple.

I'm really frustrated with the BR dress. It's marked 8P, but fits like a tight 6P. I managed to get it zipped, but almost didn't get it off. Under no universe is it a size 8P.

I'm going to have to get real hard nosed about returning things I'm not 100% happy with, and not just settle for "it will do."

Bettycrocker....I shop a lot at BR and I've been finding the sizes to be very inconsistent lately. I'm all over the place. Returns and reorders galore. So frustrating.
That definitely sounds like an unlucky day. :/

That's true, Marilyn. It's evident in the size charts, but few women bother to look at them.

Still, sometimes I just get unlucky. Today was one of those days. First off, my DD accidentally broke my teapot, so I ordered another one. It arrived today, broken in the box. Next, the LBD I ordered from BR arrived, and doesn't fit, even though I went by their size charts and already have a size 8P dress from BR that fits beautifully. The LBD is a very nice dress, but it's too body con, and I doubt that I can size up and get the fit I want. Back it goes. Lastly, some pants I ordered are a bit snug, even though--again--they are the right size for me according to the size chart. Back they go.

If there's one thing I've learned from YLF, it's not to settle for things that don't fit perfectly, don't flatter (some things can fit perfectly but still not be flattering), and aren't well made.

Bettycrocker.....We're the same on the top. I'm usually either an 8 Petite or 6 Regular. People often don't realize that you need to go up a size in petites.

I'm like Marilyn - size Petite Medium or Regular Small. Also, it depends on the brand. Small fits me if it's size S(6-8). If it's S(4-6), it rarely fits. Lastly, I almost always wear size 8 if it's petite, but size 6 if it's regular. I have to pay close attention to size charts, and even then the fit can sometimes be off. For this reason, it pays to buy from merchants that have excellent and easy returns policies.

Sometimes an item just doesn't work. I definitely wouldn't buy the smaller one if it pulls but I can't see the bigger one without a photo. Can you post a pic? Order it or buy it & try it on & take pics.

I was going to suggest trying the petite as well. If you like the regular small I would try a petite medium. I'm a PM on top but every once in a while when I get stuck between sizes I grab a regular S.

Yeah....those are painful situations. When caught in that bind, I usually just say NEXT because neither size fits properly. Unless it is an easy alteration.

Laura, thanks for the hand-holding! I was proud of myself--I walked away rather than torment further. I did feel that neither one was "just right" and I should listen and either find the perfect in-between possibility as kkards noted, or just chalk it up to "next".
The other above advice is quite helpful as well, as it would be easy to default to the smaller size, but I want that extra fluidity and the sensation of drapiness.
Even though I have a small frame, I don't like how more neatly fitting blouses seem to make me look so prim--I like the more off-hand look of the larger size. Plus there is an actual feel to the fit. But then I have to have the right kind of fit and fabrication to pull that off. So that is a "top goal" and I can keep that in mind.

I vote for option 3, it just isn't right for you. This happens to me all the time, and it's tedious. I agree with Janet, never go smaller when there's pulling, but that doesn't mean that larger will work either. As you mention, the armholes and length are often different and sometimes that just throws everything off too much. Taking in the side seams a tad isn't that big of a deal, nor adjusting a hem when it's simple, but messing with armscyes and how the sleeves fit is a big alteration, and when I've tried it on thrift store stuff I've never been satisfied with the results.

That's a fit problem I have a lot, and I always go with the larger size. Like Janet, I simply can't ignore the pulling across the chest, no matter how slight.

I have this problem a lot, and I've learned to go with the larger size. I can then get the side seam taken in a little bit. But every time I've ignored that "slight pulling across the chest" I've lived to regret it.

kk, good idea, I have done larger P's and smaller T's to get small adjustments in fit, so maybe I can find a petite small to see if it's a skoach smaller.

hmmm. i think i might be of the mind that this top just isn't going to work and look for a similar shape in another top/brand.
but, having said that, i'll offer one other idea. i can't remember how tall you are, but you might want to try a petite size S.

Such a pretty top! I do like my tops with more fluidity - so I'd be tempted to take the larger size. Unless we are on point duty at an intersection, how often do we raise our arms up anyway? As long as the neckline did not gap, shoulder seams line up correctly, and sleeves were not 'baggy' I'd be happy.
I hear you on the imperfections tho - I might check out another BR to see if they had it in stock.

I personally would not go with one that pulls across the chest. No matter how well it fits everywhere else, it will appear small. I wouldn't worry about how wide it looks with both arms out or up... how often does one do that?

Actually the K/R I just posted has a ridiculous bat like look if I put my arms out!

I would try to get one without a flaw in the hem though. Well, depending how obvious it is. I don't like things to be flawed!

The BR store has this top in a light gray. It may be a blast from the 80's, but I like it, especially tucked, and like how the knit cuff lets sleeves stay scrunched.

No pics, so have to use imagination here, but I'm stuck on sizes.
The XS fits fluidly but still pulls a little across chest and is not really long.
The next size up, size S I just love for how when tucked it looks like it has luxurious extra fabric, kind of swashbuckle-y, kind of intentionally oversized, so it adds proportion to slimmer bottoms like pencil skirt, but at that size the armholes are deeper. That's actually good on the one hand, because it gives more room in chest (funny since I don't really need that!). So me it looks great when arms are down, and armholes depth isn't visible, but when I raise arms, I think most people would think it's a whole size too big.

Of course one approach is to say neither fits. I'm torn because the smaller size is the more conventional, while the larger size may be too aggressively oversized.

I could take one home and play, as mirror truth is better, so I may do that. Would probably do the smaller one to see if it is not wearable in the ways I need, such as if too tight through hip to wear out, etc., and also in store there was only one of each size and the S had just the slightest problem with the hem, hung a bit crooked (apropos the question on, " how perfect" should items be) so might have to order another one.

Thoughts? On how you resolve, go big or go home vs. whether will wake up and say, this is just wrong and stick with more usual sizing.
