Thank you again, so much for your advice and help.

I'm 100% sure I'm going to return this skirt. Modgirl said it best "if it doesn't fit perfectly...return in". I was seduced into the fantasy for this skirt by how fabulous it was on Natalie. If I could get the larger size (I tried), I'd keep it and try to make it work. Since I can't, I'd rather make room in the budget for better things (like the black/grey oxford shoes). This isn't the only midi skirt in the world and other ones may come into my life in the future.

I have two Halogen pencil skirts I've been experimenting with - going to post a keep/return for those. :)

Thank you again, for your helpful suggestions, which I will be referring back to when the next midi skirt comes into my life.

I love #4 in your first set of pics and #1 in the second set! I think it works really well when you put a jacket over it. I think it works really well with the boots in #1 and I would even try wearing those boots with #4. The citron blouse in #5 is cool too.

I think it looks nice on you esp. untucked and with a jacket on top. That said, if the tummy is bothering you because it's a size too small, it may not be worth keeping. I totally understand though...I kept an evening dress that is slightly too tight because that was the only size available and I really liked it!

I find difficult to style A-line midi skirts. Pencil and flared midi skirts are easier but A-line falls in between those two types and is difficult (for me anyway). I can see this skirt tapered working really well on you.
Anyway the key is to keep the top part shorter and fitted (tuck in if you don't have short tops) and adding a belt can help too. For the footwear I agree with Jenava that boots should be very fitted and ideally with a bit of heel. Low vamp pumps or higher vamp nude shoes may work too.

If it doesn't fit perfectly I would return it. Midi skirts are tricky. You really need to work at creating an extra long leg line. If you can't tuck into it, I think its going to continue giving you problems.

Sylvie, I think the first top you had on in your original post is the perfect length to leave untucked. If any of your tanks are that length, why not leave try those untucked?

I think cropped cardigans wouldn't be required if you can leave the lower part unbuttoned (either unbutton all the way or button only at the waist, and we'll be able to the see your waist), or if the cardigan really nips in at your waist or ties there like one of the jackets, then even hip-length cardigans in colours of equal value (not much lighter or darker than the skirt itself, never mind the actual colour, which need not tone) should be fine too.

I actually liked both boots in #1 and #2 with the skirt, and #4 absolutely works --- I didn't comment on it because you mentioned it's too high. It's only #3 that's a bit too sporty-casual to my eye for this skirt. I actually don't think you *have* to have a low-vamp shoe -- as long as your shoe let's us see your legs, whether because of being ankle-high bootie or because it's a boot that is pretty streamlined, you should be fine. And with flats, of course a lower contrast, or toning stockings will help achieve that long leg line. But that's no reason to eschew non-toning ones --- see how well #1 worked!

Is the top you're wearing in the last photo you just posted the right length to wear untucked (like the original #1-2)? That neckline is lovely on you, and it looks great with the skirt, so if length is not a concern I'd try it untucked, maybe belted if it's a little too long. Is your one belt something you'd not see going with the skirt?

Thank you so much for your comments and suggestions. The consensus is shorter tops, lower vamp shoes/fitted boots, and tucking in a longer top. My wardrobe just doesn't contain skirt-friendly clothing:

No short tops other than a few tanks (brown, pink, black, red)
Only one pair of low vamp shoes since I can't walk fast in pumps or ballet flats
No cropped cardigans
Only one waist belt

Kiwichik: I agree the boots in #1 are the best out of the lot. #5 boots are no good but I liked the color. I tried the gray jacket below (1) but it's still a bit dressy/formal.

Jenava: The boots in #1 and #2 are as streamlined as it gets on my legs. #1 is pretty dressy too. #4 is a simple pump. Do none of those work? Is the top in #2 too long? I felt that one was the perfect length. I liked the yellow color too but tucking it in just makes my short waist look even shorter.

Manidipa: Oh, how the camera lies to us! The skirt is at least 2 inches below my knee, hitting the top part of my calf muscle. You're also being fooled by my 3 inch heels in #4. A belt is a good idea - I would consider trying one if I already had one in my arsenal. I don't own a white or chambray shirt but I did try several cardigans and they always looked frumpy because they were long and not cropped. Thank you for the compliment on my glasses - I forgot to blank out my face, which has since been fixed. :)

Diana: Showing leg (or at least the shape) seems to be key to making a midi work. I will definitely be trying the belting trick while I accquire shorter tops, if not with this top, with a different one.

Fern: Hmm, the yellow blouse would work well with the boots from #2. This isn't a keep/return but more a "here's what I tried - any suggestions?" thread. I'm in the middle of a purchasing spree where I ask for feedback on a bunch of stuff, then decide what to keep based on love/need/budget. Part of my decision making process is to pit items against each other and if I could only fit one into the budget, the Jcrew blouse would win easily. I did love the blouse and intend to repurchase it as soon as it goes on sale.

I'm confident I could make this skirt work if I added a few more clothes to the wardrobe and experimented with belts, tucking, etc. Unfortunately, the skirt is also a little too small (see 2 below), I have 1 more week to return it, and I didn't lose my extra couple of pounds in the past 3 weeks. I need to wear a longer top to cover the creases, but this conflicts with the advice to wear a shorter top. I do have a few other skirts in the queue, so maybe one of those will make it into the wardrobe.

Thanks again!

I love this skirt on you, too.
I really like 5, minus the boots. I think the skirt looks brighter with the yellow on top.
The shoes in 4 are really lovely, but if they are too high, so be it. Do you have dark flats? Maybe the yellow blouse with the ribbon-less boots from 2?

Wait, I just re-read your post. Is this a keep or return question? That J.Crew shirt was amazing on you.

I agree with the other ladies that I think the tees are all too long for the skirt. I like the tucked look, but would probably wear it with the boots from #1 so that a little leg shows. Sometimes with a top that's too long, you might be able to make it work with a belt at the natural waist.

I'm seeing no reason not to wear flats with this, Sylvie.

The thing to remember is that the skirt sits differently on Natalie (is longer, on you it's knee-length). So you need to keep the top half a little shorter than she would. The jacket look totally works in aesthetic terms and I think would still work with ballet flats. BUT, if you used a casual denim or leather jacket, that would be great too --- as you've shown in #2. Which is also a look that totally works, in my opinion. I think the orange top, for example, might look better tucked in.

It's not as casual as a denim or plain cotton twill skirt, so it needs a little more polish on top. Which is why the last citron blouse works beautifully, and is in fact my favourite pairing. However...

Again remembering that Natalie's hem is much lower and the shape is an A-line ending at your knee, I'd suggest sleeker boots or shoes that show off your lower legs in tights. Possibly in a toning colour, which is what you did in #1. Your slender arms and the soft feminine blouse feel a little 'lightweight' and dainty compared to the visual weight and width of those boots here. But what if you wore the same boots with the orange T-shirt?

Another trick to try: A belt over the waistband of the skirt to add 'weight' might vibe better with the chunkier boots.

In fact, a belt might also life the hem of the problem orange top a little. Worth a shot?

Other options: How about a plain white or chambray shirt tucked in or knotted at waist but left half open over a cami? Or leave untucked and add a waist-defining belt? What about a cardi and a tank-top for a more casual look than jackets?

By the way, I don't think I'd noticed your glasses before --- what a fab shape and colour!

Just one other thought --- when trying to match top to skirt, note that matching the exact shade of orange may not be the best idea, as the rest of the skirt's colours influence what we see from a distance. If you plan to get another top to go with this, I'd go for a slightly more saturated orange or an outright red.

I think these tee-shirts are all too long. The jacket I think it too severe and is just too much with the skirt.

I like the yellow quite a lot, actually. Your leg line is looking nice and long when you tuck with this skirt! If you have any other blouses that you can tuck in try those. Try the denim jacket over the yellow blouse.

You'll need very fitted boots to wear with this skirt. If you have some fitted, dressy, streamlined boots try those, otherwise go for a simple pump. The ankle strap paired with the flatness of the sandal (and also is very casual) is not very flattering to my eye.

Hi Sylvie I think the skirt looks good with the boots in 1 with some of your leg showing between the boot & skirt and the shape of the jacket in 4 goes well with the skirt. I'm not sure about the pattern on the jacket. I think the shirt in 5 looks fine but not with boots.

I'm just about ready to give up on the blue/orange midi skirt that I copied from Natalie/goldenpig. I just don't have the right tops/footwear to make this work - believe it or not, these are the best of the bunch.

1) With black t-shirt and heeled fitted mid-calf black boots. This is the option feels most "me".

2) With dark brown tank. denim jacket and heeled brown boots (took the ribbon off one of them if you prefer that look better)

3) With orange t-shirt purchased specifically for this skirt. The t-shirt is too long and the color isn't flattering on me. The skirt looks dowdy with flats and I need to be able to wear flats with it.

4) Failed copycat of GP's signature look with this skirt. It's nowhere near as fab as her version and it's too dressy/formal for my lifestyle. 3" black pumps are great for an evening out but not so practical for my workplace.

5) On a whim, threw on a yellow blouse and cognac boots. The lack of ankle definition makes my legs look stumpy.

I think I could wear looks #1 and #2, but that's not enough to outweigh the designer price, imperfect fit, and lack of versatility with the rest of the wardrobe.

I could get the Jcrew blouse I'm sale stalking or the Express not-leather jacket for less than the cost of the skirt, either of which would get worn more.

Anyway, just wanted to share my attempts, so you know that I *did* try.
