I like the pants. What about a cashmere shell or sweater. Or a tasteful, colorful silk blouse. If this is exploratory, you could take one of these black jackets off soon, to convey a more relaxed vibe. Even push up your sleeves, because, you know, sleeve scrunching is on trend! Well, not just that, but it might convey confidence and interest.

Thanks for the input!
Rachylou, black is common because it's common, but something less severe would be ideal. Dimity, approachable is good too so I will for sure try out some more interesting options.

All the best unfrumped. I like the coloured top suggestion.
Personally I just wear the suit I bought in 2004! I think it says "interview"

You could consider exploring your other, less formal options too. This is an exploratory meeting so you want to look as though you don't necessarily need them, and to do that you'd need to look relaxed and confident. If this was me right now, in cold weather, I'd be looking at a really classy wool/cashmere maxi cardigan with modern trousers and shirt in gorgeous colours. I'd be going for a creative, polished look that oozes confidence, isn't fussy and looks as though you didn't agonise over what to wear.

Anyway, you situation may be different and any of these options would be lovely. Best wishes!

it takes a lot of effort to keep "on hand" coordinating items that have some longevity

Too true. I like both jackets, and will tell you I have a penchant for leather detailing. Is it normal in your field to interview in black suits? I generally don't do that in my field, because of black's severity.

Good luck with the interview. Do you have a bright solid drapey top or tee? That might cut the severity of all black but still look formal enough for an interview. I like the anthro jacket best of the two jackets. If you have time, post some outfits.

Hard for me to tell from the pictures. If it is an interview, do you need a full, matched suit? If so, check Talbots. Might be a bit too classic, or might be what you need.

good luck - I have no luck with suit type outfit and proportions fitting due to being an extreme pear and do the mix and match faux suit look tons. I agree I think we need to see some options to help you out.
My gut instinct is the blue jacket - When I interview I always go for a bold look - I don't want to blend in. For my current job I had three interview rounds and each time was a fiercely bold colored jacket or topper. I was just talking with someone about this. She mentioned that she used to dress to blend in and then she started to dress with some boldness and now she has the job (pretty big wig job) she wants that she should of had years ago.
No matter what you choose it needs to make you feel fierce - because it is that fierceness and belief in yourself that comes through in an interview.

Unfrumped, I'm sure that you'll come up with an appropriate outfit from the options you describe. It's difficult to judge the proportions just from the pictures here, but the first jacket plus the tapered pants and drapey tee seems a good bet to me.

Good luck with the possible job opportunity.

I was all set to suggest the Anthro.. but then saw that it's also black But I'm still going to suggest it, because the textured bit along the hems should add some extra visual interest which will help if you're donning all black. It also looks a bit longer which should work nicely with pants. You can fudge the proportions a bit with your footwear; even something at 2" can help if you need extra length to balance things out. If you've got time to show us some combinations you're considering but aren't sure on the proportions I'm sure we can help get you sorted.

Well, giving up on collecting more corporate or business-like toppers can backfire.
I may have the opportunity for a meeting to explore a new work opportunity and for that I will want a jacket-type outfit--ideally something that really looks good! Frustratingly, I find myself without too many choices since all of my suit-type looks from a few years past were either dated or fit poorly, so I gave those up. I looked around a bit for replacements but didn't get good fits in several brands, and also find it hard to get proportions right with mix & match, so since nothing was falling in my lap, I opted for more casual jacket looks, or a cardigan here or there or neither, just outdoor coat or trench, or leather jacket, since I usually don't wear a topper during actual work.

I'm still working on seeing what I can use from a couple of pinstripe black jackets, black pants, gray tops, and deciding whether pencil skirt look would work. It's still cold for me to wear nude hose so I'm a sea of black if I wear tights!

The biggest challenge is proportions--wrong topper for pants or skirt--and lesser but still problem is colors--so much black! Or topper and bottom don't quite blend. Wish I could have had on hand a luscious mid-tone neutral.

Top contender right now may be the AT tapered pants + Tahari jacket (both with faux leather accents, coincidentally) because the stance and shape of the Tahari looks better than an AT suit jacket I have, and a dressed-down plain gray drapey T -top (not the camels!). On me the pants are more full-length. Or maybe the Anthro jacket (which is black, not blue) with skirt or trousers--with that, might have a tweed option for pants or skirt since wouldn't compete with the pinstripe.

Alternatively I might find one of my cardigans that works, but more of a jacket would be best.

Anyway, sorry for just mostly whinging, as I still have to pull out more things to try--I think I'm not yet seeing all my possibilities and need to think outside the box. But it was interesting to me, that it takes a lot of effort to keep "on hand" coordinating items that have some longevity and that I would have to really hunt much more diligently to maintain a version of the power suit, matched or unmatched, and even more challenging to have several such options.
