lisap--"Plunking" is, like, you reach into the closet, take a swath of clothes/hangars off the rail and plunk them onto your rolling rack. Done!
Firecracker--Thank you! I wear the bracelet and earrings pretty much everyday. The bracelet is from Blue Nile and it feels good and wears well.

I have no idea what plunking is , but yes , this experiment proved that I have more than enough to work with . I also do not need nor benefit from a huge wardrobe . I guess I'm an odd one that way I am happy to wear the same things often and don't require a huge variety . I like to think I'm past that point in my life now , and that with age and wisdom have finally put clothes into their proper perspective .

lisap--I'm glad that capsule-making was rewarding for you and an experience worth repeating. I feel like I learned a lot from the capsule-making process and, now that I've decided to add a workout capsule in addition to the 30 pieces,I think I will be able to live easily within the confines of the capsule.

ETA: Ha! I just got back from reading your other comments and now know that your capsule-making process was more like plunking! :-) I'm sure that your success and ease in doing this was predicated on having a lot of beautiful options and depth of choice.

I just commented about my capsule experience in StyleFan's recent post. I'm loving the concept and finding it immensely rewarding. However - I don't see any value in feeling you have to stick to 30 pieces and only 30 pieces. Also parsing out jewellery, shoes, gym wear etc - I think the point is to find that magic number that works for you, keeping in mind the goal and the concept behind capsuling . If you are an avowed wardrobe maximalist and worried about getting variety and whatever else you like about tons of clothes....then this isn't for you. When I started, I did it by colour palette, not by counting the number of pieces, and it all fell into place. I bet that I didn't come anywhere near 30 pieces for 2 months , and that would include shoes. I'm now on my second 60 day capsule, and it includes even fewer pieces than my first one did.

I agree with Sterling -- I'd also have allowed jewellery and maybe even scarves and bags as outside the 30, just keeping it to fashion clothing and possibly (but not necessarily) footwear. True, that might equal most of your seasonal wardrobe, but that in itself would teach you something, right?

Joy -- I anticipated that I would run into trouble with the shoes. On one hand, I have a few new pair and it would be impossible for me not to enjoy using them right away. On the other hand, I've looked at a lot of blog posts about small capsule wardrobes and the shoe choices always raise some concerns for me. For example, they often feature a shoe selection such as: one fashion sneaker, one light/nude ballet flat or sandal and one black bootie or boot. And then they show the available outfits that can be made from the clothing shown. I usually look at those outfits and think, "Well, that will be OK, I guess, but not nearly so appropriate as the same outfit with cage sandals...or loafers...or slides...or whatever." It's the same disadvantage that is suffered by having a mix-and-match wardrobe vs building individual outfits featuring the best possible components.

Style Fan — I did not even include enough work-out items (a measly three!) to make a functional capsule. I have decided that work-out clothing should get a pass and should not count in the 30 piece cap. Also, I feel for those (like you) who are dealing with quite variable weather—that uses up a lot of wardrobe slots. The 30 piece challenge is truly different for people who live in temperate locales vs those who deal with weather.

bridgie — Thank you! I thought my mental gyrations were funny. Even if you do not participate—and I admire the fact that you want to be able to commit fully—the planning exercise is instructive.

Jenni NZ —Thanks! It was so rewarding to identify and wrangle with some of these issues.

LaPed — You totally get a pass on gear and gear-footwear!

Clementine — Thank you! Just the planning was so helpful!

Sterling — I appreciate your analytical approach. I’d thought that I am your match for analytics (and I am not a very sentimental or emotional person overall) so it really surprised me to be sidetracked by emotional response about the new shoes and the desire to make different dressier outfits.

Suz — Thank you! I’m giving myself a pass on the workout gear! And, now that I’ve replaced them with three needed items, I am really happy with the resulting 30 pieces. Not that I’ve committed to participate past the planning stage, though :-)

It has been a busy Fathers' Day, so I have yet to fine tune my 30X30, but I think that I will exclude jewelry and only use my pair of small diamond stud earrings.
I am having panic over shoes and completely understand yours. I also have indoor and out door footwear. I think that I will exempt my indoor footwear and just limit myself to Smartwool footies for the 30 days. They are really never part of an outfit anyway.
Gear, sleepwear and loungewear are nonexistent for me except for a terry robe. I will exempt it as no fashion and never seen in public. I suppose I should make room for my swim suit.
You are right. This is hard. I am not including things like my wide leg crops that I had intended to wear heavily this summer because I am still struggling with styling them and just how they will feel in hot weather is an unknown.

Wow. You have really given this thought. I am impressed by your logic.
You deserve a Ph.D. in Wardrobe Planning and Execution.

Making exercisers count work-out clothing unfairly limits the number of fashion items they can include in the capsule relative to individuals who do not work out. I agree wholeheartedly. Do I go back and re-assess? I don't know. My goal for including work-out clothing was impetus to get me to the gym on hot and humid days when I would rather go home and veg out on the sofa. It will be come immediately obvious to me if those items are not be worn. Numbers don't lie. I will include my five work out items.

Counting jewelry negates this powerful, wardrobe-stretching technique. I vote to exclude jewelry—and maybe accessories, too—from the count. You built a powerful case to exclude jewelry and accessories. No one could argue with your logic. I am going to exclude the two pair of earrings, include my bags/belts because bags/belts are part my style signature. So are earrings, but .....

Hope others see your post and adjust as they see fit.

Emily, it looks to me as if you are building a smart and cohesive and attractive wardrobe and learning tons about yourself and your preferences. The 30 x 30 challenge has already taught you more (and different!) than you expected. As you said yourself, it might not be the right time in your fashion journey to worry about restriction -- you are still playing around with what you like. Still, with some adaptations, this might turn out to be do-able.

I would give yourself a pass for workout clothes. Those are gear-- not fashion clothing. If I were to try something like this I'd bracket workout clothing and underwear and might also allow myself coats (in season) as "extras" over the 30.

The cases for work-out wear, gear, and jewelry.

I’ve revisited my thinking on what “should” go into a 30 X 30 capsule. In this post, I chose to exclude gear, but included work-out wear and jewelry. I’ve had some second thoughts about this. And, also, I know that this exercise is meant to be tailored to fit and helpful/elucidating for each participant--so there are no "real" rules. I've jotted down these thoughts, mostly, for any help that they might give others who are capsule-crafting.

Re: Gear—I chose to exclude gear because this is a fashion forum and gear is not so fashion-y. (Well, mine isn’t.) But I do wear gear daily. I wear muck boots at the dog park and I choose from among four water-repellant, parka-y coats for my lengthy dog walks and for running errands if the weather is inclement. Thinking more generally, by eating into the 30-item-total, the inclusion of gear would bias the challenge against those who live in extreme climates and require more gear. There is probably happy medium in which a dress coat or trench is counted and parka is not.

Re: Workout Wear—I chose to include work-out wear, but struggled with overall item count and kept too few pieces to form a useful workout capsule. But, more importantly, I reconsidered the basis for including work-out clothing in the item count and decided that work-out clothes should NOT be included. Work-out gear is necessary, special purpose, and doesn’t usually cross-over with one’s daily fashion. We are NOT talking about people who wear yoga pants all day! If you do that, you have to count it! Making exercisers count work-out clothing unfairly limits the number of fashion items they can include in the capsule relative to individuals who do not work out. Since working out (and the clothing required) is additional to the daily fashion requirement, I think it should represent additional items in the count. Again, there is a leveling of the playing field element to this decision.

Re: Jewelry—I chose to include jewelry in the 30-item-count. Upon reflection, I think jewelry should be excluded from the count. One thing we’ve heard/read forever is that we can change-up the look of a small wardrobe through creative accessorizing. Counting jewelry negates this powerful, wardrobe-stretching technique. I vote to exclude jewelry—and maybe accessories, too—from the count.

Again, I know that there are no real rules to this capsule challenge. Just some mental gymnastics as I continue to refine my capsule.

To second LaP: It's all about what works for you. Identify what your goals are, and build the challenge from there.

Look at how much you have learned about yourself in the lead up to the 30 x 30 challenge. In my opinion, you are ahead of the pack. YAY pack leader!!!

I learned so much from my first 30 x 30 challenge! That was when I discovered how comfortable I was wearing ensembles on repeat. During that challenge I had far more activities I had to plan around (similar to you and your life). I had weather fluctuations that made everything all the more challenging.

I think I needed 32 garments to get me through the 30 days. Still good. I did NOT count workout gear that time. I focused on making sure I had everything I needed to get me through the work day and casual evenings/weekends. Thirty-two garments just for work and casual. It was still a challenge. By the end of it, I couldn't wait to start wearing all my other gorgeous clothes. I came away appreciating the garments that were not part of the 32 x 30!! I missed them. I wanted to wear them all the more.

The reason I am counting workout gear this time is because late June-July is one of the slowest times in my life. Field work becomes minimal. There are fewer work meetings. I have far fewer clothing needs. And certainly no weather fluctuations. So I had to design my capsule in such a way that it actually DID challenge me. How does one learn unless one challenges oneself? My solution was to add in gear. I thought that would also encourage me to GO TO THE GYM. Win - win.

Side Note: I am going to really enjoy looking at people's Finds. Your finds are beyond gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fantastic post! Although I'm not doing the challenge this time, it's sounding like I'll get plenty of value out of just planning what would be in the capsule. I think I'll do this today. Thanks for the inspiration!

Oh I totally get this. If you have lots of new shoe acquisitions, then give yourself a free pass to play around with them. Or, make a separate rule along side the 30, like, don't wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row, or something like that.

Also, re: gear -- yeah, it's hard. I've ended up with a separate capsule, because mine is outdoor gear, not gym gear, and I just participate in too many different activities in the summer. Running shorts, bike shorts, hiking pants, long sleeve shirt, short sleeve shirt, sunhat, insulating layer, waterproof layer -- it adds up really fast! I also don't really over-buy gear anymore. I've figured out brands and styles that work for me, and basically just replace 1-for-1 as things wear out. That's my justification for not "needing" to include it in my thirty.

But, like everyone keeps saying, it's all about what works for you. Identify what your goals are, and build the challenge from there.

Emily, This cracks me up. I am thinking about doing this 30X30 thing. I have not committed yet because I do not like to start something I can't finish and in this case I do not know if I can even start. I was thinking I would start Monday. I was up way past midnight and up at 5:am this morning trying to wrap my head around it. I hope you get your shoes sorted. It reminded me that when I travel, vacation or even go away for a weekend the numerous pairs of shoes I NEED. Anyway, good luck to you, and you to Style Fan. (Smiling)

Emily I am working on my 30 x 30 wardrobe. I wear Yoga clothes many times a week. I was not planning to include them in my 30 x 30. If I do Yoga almost daily then that is 10 items. (3 leggings, 2 jackets, 4 tanks, 1 T shirt) I don't wear any of these items anywhere else.
It is challenging to come up with the items. For me it is the weather. One day it is pouring rain and the next it is extremely hot. We have also had some gorgeous days that are more mild. I am scratching my head over this. I still have some sweaters in my wardrobe.

Inspired by Sterling’s challenge ( https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....-challenge ), I’ve been playing around with the development of a 30 X 30 wardrobe. The process has been fascinating and has raised quite a few questions. First of all, I assumed that the process would be easy. I have a small mix and match wardrobe comprising only a few neutral colors—this means that 1) I get to choose a large percentage of it for the challenge and 2) choosing items to mix and match is like shooting fish in a barrel.

But, as I drilled down, trying to make final decisions, some weird ( and kinda funny) biases surfaced:

Even though working out is important to me—I go to the gym at least 3 times a week and I have dedicated workout wear—I was willing to deal out most of my workout clothes in favor of…well…mostly shoes. First, I traded out my leotards and skirts in favor of capri leggings—thereby saving one item per day. Then, I traded away one of the dedicated workout tops—thinking that I could use a regular tee…or, maybe…just keep washing the one each day? Right. ;-)

I also made room for 4 toppers. This is only amusing if you remember that a couple of months ago I had none. Yes—NO toppers beyond gear. Now, I "need" four.

I struggled to edit the pants to four. I was sad about swapping out the wide-legged cream Levi’s for the new Michael Kors black ankle pants. I HAD to do it, though. Even though I just bought the black pants and have not even worn them yet—heck, I haven’t even hemmed them yet—they filled a need and earned a place in the rotation. This probably reflects another flaw in the capsule: although I will wear the 501's several times per week, I will wear the black pants only on the dressier days, so that''s really only three pair of pants per week. I really need to include another pair of pants.

Most of my days are casual, but I will need dressier clothes at least once per week. Still, that’s only 4-5 days/30 days and I will have plenty of time to launder dressier components and have them ready to go by the next week, right? Wrong. Apparently, I need CHOICE. Nevermind that weeks ago I didn’t have choice. Now, I find I NEED separates capable of making 3-4 completely different, dressier outfits. Quite a few choices were made solely to enable dressier combinations.

Which brings me to shoes. I have traded away many items of clothes (in addition to work-out, mostly shirts--I dwindled down to only five shirts) in order to retain "enough" shoes in my 30 X 30 capsule. First of all, I tried to “hide” the Crocs slides in my workout capsule because I would have been embarrassed to count them as actual shoes. And—worse yet—they are on order but they haven’t even arrived yet. I am just overwhelmed with the anticipation of wearing them, I guess, and I kicked out a perfectly useful and necessary shirt in order to make room under the capsule cap. So, there are six pair of shoes not including the Crocs. Of these, one pair are the black block heels that I was debating in another post. New, not yet worn, unproven, and already seeming necessary to my idea of wardrobe crafting. Another pair—the black and white espadrilles, are also new and unworn. But, again, they seemed necessary to include. And, lastly, the two pair of nude shoes—booties and loafers—I kept editing out…and bringing back…and editing again. The loafers, in tandem with the nude bag, contribute to the dressier casual outfits in a way that the booties do not. But the booties get more wear. In the end, I HAD TO HAVE both.

So, learning so far includes the fact that I’m willing to cheat the workout category in favor of…shoes. I should probably get my head right about that—working out (and having the appropriate clothes to work-out in) is important. I am willing to cheat the shirts category for…shoes. Hmmmm..shirts are important, too, and I think I have too few in the capsule relative to the number of pants. I am really excited to have a lot of new shoes to build into outfits and I do not want to limit myself in this area. Black pants were a huge wardrobe hole, apparently. And, I actually need toppers.

The biggest realizations so far are: 1) I think I am more emotional about clothing than I thought that I was and 2) I think I'm still in the expanding and enjoying my wardrobe phase and not ready to do a challenge about constraint and limitation.

Oh...and #3) I thought I was planning my whole wardrobe around white pants, black pants, and jeans pairing with a lot of navy tops. Navy is one of my better colors and the one I want to wear near my face. In this smaller wardrobe...NO navy tops! (Well, only the Breton stripe.) Maybe something I need to reconsider.

So, these finds represent what would be my 30 X 30 capsule--as it is now, anyway--plus 2 pair capri leggings, and 1 technical shirt.
