I also have "dainty-but-square" shoulders. I like a slight shoulder emphasis, like a nice jacket. I am also learning to like puffed sleeves more (I avoided them for a long time, but I have several flattering ones now), but I do find they look best when the puff bit is set a little closer to my neck, and not falling off my shoulder.

Taylor, that's how I see it anyway. We all see different things! I too have dainty shoulders but they're very square and do not slope. This makes them appear "stronger". You can see how square my shoulders are in this dress:

http://youlookfab.com/2010/05/.....or-spring/

But I wouldn't describe myself as having a strong shoulder line. I hope that makes sense :0)

Angie: thanks, that makes sense. That's too bad about the blouse though, I love the color and material and the fit otherwise...I guess I'll stick to more moderate puffs like the ones on this blouse:

R.S., there is a bug I know about where initially after signing up your login name is used instead of your "display name".

If you have any idea what caused the switch (e.g. did you access your profile for the first time?) then please let me know in a private message.

(I'm not sure, but we are checking into it).

Actually, I don't think you have a particularly strong shoulder line. Your shoulders are quite dainty, but they are square and not sloped which makes them appear stronger. Very pretty shoulders you have! No worries at all of ever looking like a linebacker.

That being said, the puff on the sleeves of the first blouse are too wide - but too wide for anyone because it's not a great cut. But the jacket looks amazing!

I have a rather strong shoulder line and I don't hide them:)

The photo seems to accent your upper arms rather than shoulder line I think.

crazyone, I think that the puffy sleeves (the first photo) do indeed make your shoulders look a little, um, disproportionately wide. Like, I know that all of that volume is not being filled up with shoulder, right! I have a very similar shirt that I've worn exactly once--feeling too shouldery all day, I might add.
On the other hand, that jacket looks GREAT and it balances out your figure very nicely. The shoulder on that is more angular and not as wide. It has more structure.
I guess it just depends on the piece, what you are wearing it with, and what kind of look you are trying to achieve?

Whoops, I just saw your photos!

I don't think your shoulders look too wide at all. Outfit #1 is more rounded and #2 is really sharp and structured. I really like the jacket in #2!

I am going to take a guess that this is where bending the rules comes into play and say it depends.

1) I think it depends on whether you like the strong shoulder look and want to accentuate your shoulders

2) I'm thinking it also is a balancing act that depends on the piece.

If yes and yes, then go for it!

I received a top as a gift that has very ruffled shoulders but they are actually inset closer in toward the neck, which minimizes the width. I think this works fine on me. However I recently looked at a picture of myself in a puff sleeved jacket and thought it made my shoulders look wide.

In my "what body type" am I thread, a few people noted that I have a strong shoulder line. I've noticed this before, but it hasn't stopped me from wearing the occasional strong shoulder piece, especially now that they're in fashion: a strong shoulder jacket or two and puffed sleeves. Only once have I thought, "oh, my shoulders look big" and then I continued wearing the shirt thinking that it was the trend anyway. Should I not be doing this? Is this trend only for those with sloped shoulders? In my thinking strong shoulder lines *can* actually wear moderate strong shoulder garments (as a kind of enhancement of what you already have, especially if you are not an inverted triangle), but it seems like some think differently. Thoughts?
