Rodney Yee's instructions on his beginner yoga DVD are excellent. He even tells you how to keep your feet flexed in certain poses, how to bend forward at the hip (instead of the waist) and how to breathe. No detail is left out, That said, you have to be the type of person who pays attention to those details in order to benefit from them. I personally learn a lot more from videos than I do from written directions. When I started taking yoga classes at the gym, then teacher said my for is very good, so the DVD obviously helped me.

I gave my answer before as yoga being a great exercise for your entire body. It is the one thing that helps with flexibility and balance as you get older. But the best form of exercise if the one that you will commit to.

There are many forms of exercise that you can do without joining a gym such as riding a bike even if it is a stationary bike. Walking outside, on a treadmill, or marching in place at a pace you can keep, but also working up to your target heart rate to achieve your cardio goal.

As you get older I believe it is important to have an exercise routine in place that includes cardio, strength training, and flexibility. My neighbor attends a gym class that meets twice a week for older people (she is 77) and after 6 weeks developed sciatica. Her doctor injected her hip and leg with cortisone and now she has problems walking up and downstairs. Her doctor said that she needed to build strength in her quads and so she performed exercises that concentrated on this one area perhaps a bit too much. I urged her to go to an orthopedist to get his opinion before continuing with her exercise routine. He told her what I thought, she had a muscle imbalance. She is now going to PT and it has helped her tremendously and so now she understands what it means to exercise correctly. I have been down this same path so I understand.

So while I would like to recommend a specific dvd to help you, exercise is tricky in that people will stop when they injure themselves because they either overdo things or do not do it properly. If a gym is not an option, perhaps a personal trainer who will create a personalized program for you that you can do at home. They will teach you to perform exercises correctly and you can go from there. I learned proper form from taking classes in a PT office many years ago and have taken yoga and pilates classes so that I am confident in doing these exercises in the comfort of my own home.

The way I look at it, walk aerobics gives me cardio + weight-bearing exercise to combat osteoporosis. Yoga benefits my muscles & my arthritic joints. The weight-bearing yoga poses are not easy. The yoga I practice is slow vinyasa flow where each pose is held for up to 2 minutes. It's not aerobic, which is why I add the low-impact cardio, but it has really strengthened me. Also, it lengthens the muscles instead of bulking them up. Lastly, let me say that I do what I enjoy and what my body can handle.

I love yoga, but for me it's more of a complement to strength training. I don't think you can do just any yoga workout and expect to gain muscle - it depends on the program, body type and expectations. Certainly people who do yoga for years tend to look great, but I need faster results to stay motivated. This is just my personal experience with yoga vs. old fashioned weight training: the latter was much more effective in making me stronger and changing my appearance, the yoga was a great complement as the stretching and lighter strength work helps relieve muscle pain. Now my upper body is pretty slow to gain muscle, as confirmed by a trainer I
worked with for 6 months. And someone who is quite lean to begin with
might see visible results faster.

If you are starting from a full stop, I recommend either a few cycles of suryanamaskar or chandranamaskar, or the NYT's 7-minute workout (there's an app for it).

Or if you are a fan of skipping, start there?

Push ups and chair dips? 'Bench press' with baby?
I am very unfit, a few rounds of modified push ups, dips, and sit ups gets my heart rate up. I would need a trainer threatening me to do burpees. As Anna says, they're evil.

I'm impressed with all of you. I'd never do strength training at home (cardio I'm better at) which is why go to a gym in my lunch hour - the only way I fit it in as a mother. I'm very spoilt in having a gym in my office building (we still have to pay, but it's nice at close).

My gym asks people to get supervision using kettle bells, so I think that you should be careful doing it at home, if you were going to take up that option.

I use free weights and a simple bench we bought about 30 years ago at Academy for about $200 total. It's still going strong. I have a book that is very old but very practical called "Getting Stronger" and it shows all the major muscle groups and which exercises (and stretches) to do for each one - using simple drawings and commentary. I spend about 25 mins. per session but would like to work back up to 45 mins. Even with just 15 mins. or so several times a week I see continued results. For me, it's the most efficient way to stay toned overall. I like to be able to do 20 regular (not bent knee "easy") push ups.

I've been doing this, along with regular walks/hikes and simple floor exercises for most of my life now. I LOVE having the weights at home accessible at any time, but obviously you need a little space to do this. We use those rubber cushion floor mats that fit together like a puzzle, you can buy at the big box hardware stores to keep the bench and weights from damaging the floor and for a soft place to do floor exercises.

I just started working out and am taking it very slowly. So far one of my favourite YouTube instructors is Jessica Smith. She has a ton of routines so you might find something that suits you.I am currently doing her 20 minute weights routine which I like but might not be challenging enough if you are not a beginner like me.

As a basic starting point I use an app called 7 Minutes. Not much in the way of equipment and I modify a couple of exercises eg there is no way I can do a plank at the moment so I use my knees rather than toes. The short time makes it much easier to fit into the day.

I use the book, Strong Women Stay Young by Miriam Nelson. I think I found it used. You do it 2X/wk for about 25 minutes. For the first two months, I did it every other day, but now I think I need more recovery time so I do it every third day. She suggests ankle weights that you can add weights up to 20 pounds each, and I quite agree. I think I *outgrew* the ten pound weights within six weeks.

I like free weights that allow for swapping out and adding plates, and owning a set of the very lightest plates so that the jump up to the next increment isn't too much. Otherwise, one will outgrow fixed weights pretty quickly, and they can be pretty annoying as doorstops or paperweights.

I am seeing some arm definition after a bit more than three months. I hope to have Michelle Obama arms by the time summer rolls around.

Yes you can do yoga without instructors as long as you do not push yourself beyond your own limitations. Yoga is a process. You always work at your own comfort level and progress from there.

I understand that chair yoga is becoming very popular among older people and people with arthritis and other physical problems.

I would review different yoga dvd's to see which one is suitable for you. I would not really use a book for sole instruction. Check out the yoga dvd's on gaiam.com or the website http://www.ekhartyoga.com .

See my post on the 30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels. Literally only takes 25 minutes at home and is a great combo of strength, ab work, and cardio. It sounds like it couldn't be that hard, but it's kicking my butt and I do it every other day whenever I can find a half-hour.
You don't need anything but small weights or even a couple of cans of food.

I am a big fan of TRX, which can be done in studio or at home if you buy the equipment and watch the related videos. I like it so much I took a first level trainers' certification class. Check out trxtraining.com

And I know you're a new mom, and I think it's good to get out of the house and do something focused on you from time to time -- can you find a ymca or similar with child care?
