Very wise, Carla. I also liked the story of your husband. My husband also started wearing more color and better fitting clothes after his first trip to Utrecht. He had joined me on a work trip. Transitioning my husband from relaxed fit jeans to straight jeans made such a visual improvement. I do like having new dresses that will be unique here. I also liked the casualness of both the French and Dutch had with their clohes. They carry themselves well and always well fitting.

It seems that every time I take a trip of some significance, I'm changed by the experience and it gets reflected by my clothing. Sometimes it is dramatic and sometimes it is subtle. You might find that your new dresses and some of what you saw and experienced while abroad may impact the way you approach dressing for the next little while!

Since our trip to the Netherlands last fall DH has 'sized down' every item of new clothing he has purchased, and I don't see him reaching for any of his old oversized clothing at all. The overall look is neater, leaner, and much more appealing to me!

Thanks for all your comments! Glad to hear that you enjoy these musings. I found a lot appealing in both locations and personally veer towards more colorful and less classic, with some exceptions. The dress boutique I found in Lyon was quite different than what was on offer at the mall stores. I also have no doubt I would have had success in shopping in The Netherlands given more time. I was very rushed and have more luck when I can explore a store in more detail.

At home now unpacking. Did a quick try on for my husband of my new items but felt too out of sorts to take pictures. The “Jackson Pollack” paint dress and the navy modern classic dress tied for his favorites though he loved them all. He asked me to wear the paint dress out for supper tonight :). I’ll get a picture after I shower and before we head out. Sorry to mix thread topics.

In my experience, YES. The style in the Netherlands is a lot more fashionable and colour-rich than France. (I’ve lived in France). French dressing is generally neutral and classic.

Liesbeth, I wear a very small size and do just fine shopping in the Netherlands!

Toban, dead right on your observations. Thanks for the fab report.

If you’re petite or bordering on petite you won’t have much luck in the Netherlands no :). I personally find it comical that I live just south of the border but still find Dutch sizes generally running too big on me. I also agree that their street style is pretty trendy (I only know of the cities).

Less to report because I had very little personal time. Weather was cooler and rainer than Lyon. And Utrecht is a university city with lots of young people. As a result, saw lots of moto jackets, jeans and and all types of booties and sneakers. But I also saw a lot of bright colors, and hip to knee length jackets in colors. Definitely found it trendier than Lyon. I found it very appealing — but for fall (given DC’s hot summers).

I didn’t have much shopping time. However, it was a miss for me. Lots of fit issues in the torso and length. It was also in the midst of sales, so it was chaotic. Also, lots of fantastic dresses but I was on a dress hiatus after buying four(!) in Lyon.

I definitely want to get a moto jacket this fall, though. I won’t need it intil October. I definitely prefer a petite cut.
