I love this look! I have no idea what makes it wearable, in terms of the best body shape etc. I also wonder if it's comfortable. I've never worn a strapless top or dress, both because I feel too exposed that way and because I'd be worrying all day about it slipping down or something... While the effect wouldn't be as mortifying with a layer beneath it, I'd still wonder how firmly in place the strapless top really stays. Am I paranoid?
Tanya, you mentioned you wore this look once (with a top, not a dress) and stopped becasue it gathered too much attention. Can you elaborate? Curious.

I think that depends entirely on your size and your breasts. I don't even feel comfortable in a strapless bra, let alone a braless dress, and I don't think I know anyone quite as innovative as Nicole's mom. To be honest I am not a fan of the look anyway. I don't like the idea of a dress being supported only by my chest. But I do like the layering.

Maya, I once heard that guy on WNTW (blanking on his name) say that the secret is all in how the strapless dress is constructed. A well made, perfectly fitted strapless dress is supposed to hold you up all on its own. Has something to do with the boning inside. I imagine you still wear a strapless bra under, but the dress itself is supposed to be doing most of the work.

Not that I've ever actually found one like this myself... I don't like the look on me anyway. Makes my shoulders look too huge.

I think it's a cute look (and as Maya pointed out a way for a well endowed woman to wear a spagetti strap dress). But I think it's a very young look. I don't like to categorize styles as being too young for someone--because style has nothing to do with age. But at 39, I think I'd feel a little silly wearing it. Maybe because of my body shape too though. But it will definately make breast feeding a challenge--especially out in public. Maybe if the "dress" was more a tunic and you wore skinnies under it. That might make breast feeding more managable.

And to Maya's point about not being able to wear spagetti strap dress... 1986--my Sr. Prom. I really wanted to wear a spagetti strap dress...so my mother made one for me. To address the bra issue, she took one of my bras, and cut off the straps, and then made a second set of spagetti straps the same as the straps from the dress. She attached the second set of straps to my bra. It just looked like the dress had double spagetti straps. She actually based the pattern of the dress on where my bra landed on my body. The dress fit perfectly (and back then I had huge boobs AND a tiny waist), no part of the bra showed, and I had excellent support!

I also like it! I even have a strapless black top I once wore over white shirt and black pants. I liked the look, but it attracted too much attention so I never wore it again.

I like it too! I always hear hourglasses should try strapless dresses but I don't know how the heck you're supposed to wear a supportive bra. A strapless isn't going to cut it for someone like me or our resident bra expert Nicole. I guess this is one way of doing it.

What do you think of this style?

I first encountered it in T & S's latest book where it is mentioned as an option for pear shaped women ( they layered it over a blouse with I think, puffed sleeves
A quick web search find this article

http://www.instyle.com/instyle/trends/thelook/0,,20152456,00.html

I think I quite like it! Don't know where I will find a strapless dress in the winter though (or if it is suitable for breastfeeding!)
