When I think of straightlegs, I think of a jean that has the same opening at the knee as it does at the hem/leg opening (thus, falling straight down). To Maya's point, that diameter is different for different brands. So to achieve a true straight-leg look, you would want one that didn't hug your calves too much. On the other hand, if it looks good on you, it doesn't matter what we call it -- straight leg, skinny leg, pencil leg, cigarette leg, etc.!

Hmm, I know the leg opening on jeans grows quite a bit as the size goes up. A size 0 might only have a 14.5" leg opening on a straight leg, but a size 16 could be as big as 16". On a size 0, a 16" leg opening would be a bootcut. I guess you can't size up though, otherwise they would be too big everywhere else.

Have you thought about altering a pair of bootcuts into straight legs? What about a pair of slim bootcuts? Express has a barely boot style, but unfortunately all their washes are distressed and I know distressing isn't all that popular here. But I'm sure other brands must make a similar style.

http://www.express.com/catalog.....arely+Boot

Otherwise I would just keep trying. Some straight legs are skinnier than others. My Matchstick jeans were 14", and my Rich and Skinnies are 15".

Sorry I was so unclear - I think the Gap pair looks great! I WISH they looked like that on me. What I'm saying is when I try on this style - such as this actual pair (per Angie's question) they hug my calf to the point where you see my calf muscle definition. I'm guessing that is too tight. I have this problem because i have very muscular calves.

Those look like most of the jeans that call themselves "skinnies" to me. I like them though.

Most of my straight-legs do this, actually. I have very muscular calves and it's rare that I find a jean that skims over them without hugging a little. I'd love to find a pair that didn't, but it's not something I worry over too much- and neither should you! The Gap pair look absolutely fine to me.

Looks fine to me. As long as the jeans don't pull up when you walk. Which straight leg jeans have you tried on agrace?

I think this is one of those 'your mileage may vary' things. It depends on the cut of the jean and the size of your calf.

I know this is a weird question! With skinny jeans, they hug the leg all the way down. With straight fit jeans/ pants that I try on, a lot of times they are very tight around my calf and then kind of straighten out/ flare at the ankle. I think it looks bad when it does this, as if the pant doesn't fit. My instinct is that straight fit should just skim the calf but not hug it tightly?

Here is a visual using Gap's 'real straight' jeans: http://tinyurl.com/ydsqn6o
Edited to add: I think the Gap picture shows to me the ideal fit of these jeans. Just to be clear, these do NOT look like this on me. The calf hugs my leg like a body builder!

But back to the Gap look - See how it skims the calf and then continues on in a straight line? Is that a proper fit or is it okay if these types of jeans and pants hug the calf?

Thanks for reading!
