There are lots of good ideas here. I have my jewellery stored in boxes in the upper shelf of my closet, in a jewellery armoire that I bought at Walmart, and in 3 jewellery boxes. I love jewellery and have been collecting it since I was in public school. I inherited my mother's jewellery and her jewellery box.
I love beautiful boxes and have a collection stored away—long story.

I keep the jewellery that I am wearing in my jewellery boxes on my dresser. I like the look of the boxes. I have a big wooden one that my boyfriend bought me in the 70s, a blue leather one that was my mother's, and a wooden one that my mother bought me when I was about eleven years old.

One more idea! I have a storage case for my glasses - before cataract surgery, I had half a dozen pairs. Now the case makes very discreet watch storage. They have long slots, so a necklace or two would be right at home in each row. I like a glass top so I can see inside.

Here is one with eight rows, and very inexpensive. Fits nicely in a drawer or on a shelf.

Hi, sorry so late to the conversation. Here’s one more option for you to consider if you want to keep your jewelry out of sight. I use a hanging double sided bag with zippered pouches. Mine has zippered pockets on both sides, but here is a similar version:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/4.....oll-double

It hangs in my closet and takes up very little room. I also have a few vintage dishes that I keep on my dresser to hold one or two of my favorite necklaces. I keep one in the guest room so guests have a place to put their jewelry or small items.

Thank you for all of the ideas and suggestions - lots to consider here.

As mentioned, I am completely against jewellery displayed in the open . Visual clutter makes me anxious :). For those who enjoy creative displays - go for it! I'll be using either the flocked tray method (inside a dresser drawer) or the mirrored frameless armoire idea.

Carol, I love the idea of a vase with pussy willow branches. DD1 stretched some burlap across the back of a pretty picture frame she found at a garage sale, and also attached a few horizontal wires. The wires held dangling earrings and the burlap was excellent support for her stud earrings.

You can just get really creative...I have an open, industrial shelf stack made for garage storage that I use as a "dresser." I took a solid piece of brown raffia and tied it from end to end, and I just hang necklaces from that.

You can also get something really lovely, and use that. Like a large vase of pussy willows or dried branches, and hang the necklaces like ornaments.

I recently purchased a necklace box on Wayfair. It has dividers that can be moved and the necklaces lay flat. My delicate necklaces were getting tangled on the necklace rack. I probably stored too many on each hook. The box holds up to 20 necklaces. It’s fairly compact and so far my necklaces haven’t tangled. The dividers keep them nicely separated and they don’t jostle much when the drawers are opened. I am still working on moving my delicate necklaces to the box and may keep the larger necklaces on the stand, although I may not need it. I hope not. I keep the new box on my dresser next to a small jewelry box that holds brooches, some larger beaded pieces and a few larger dangling earrings. I keep stud earrings in a painted ceramic heart container created by DD1 when she was little. I have a decorative ring stand that someone gave me as a gift and it has become my favorite jewelry storage item. It looks like an elephant. The trunk hold the rings. It has a small tray at the bottom on which I sometimes store stud earrings. I have a separate container for watches, which I store on a shelf on my closet.

I have a lot of jewellery and am pretty organised in this department.

I store heavier necklaces (beads) on hooks inside my wardrobe door. I have elastic bands over them that prevent them banging around when I open or close the wardrobe door. It also prevents them snagging on my clothes. I love that I can see them when I reach for my clothes.

I also have IKEA shallow display drawers in my wardrobe*. I keep finer jewellery in small compartment boxes (readily available at discount retailers) and larger pendants in shallow trays lined with velvet. The velvet helps to grip the necklaces and prevent them from moving around when you open and close the drawer.

For my overflow jewellery (items that are out of favour, or that I keep for sentimental reasons), I use a box containing small individual drawers that you can get from a hardware store. It’s sold for the purpose of storing nails and screws but it is perfect for jewellery. I go through this about once a year and rotate items in and out.

*For anyone interested in the IKEA shallow drawers, which are fabulous: they are easily retro fitted to any wardrobe that has the internal holes at the side that enable drawers or shelves to be fitted. IKEA sells a free standing unit that can be used to house the drawers. You only need to attach it on one side of the wardrobe. The shallow drawers are also great for storing shoes.

I have a very old caboodle jewelry organizer. I haven't seen one of these in many years. If I was searching for a replacement I'd probably get a jewelry box that has a lid and felt lining so the jewelry doesn't scratch or roll around. I store the caboodle in the nightstand for easy access.

Enjoyed seeing and hearing about your necklace storage solutions! :)

I have sentimental boxes that were brought back from travels in Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Greece, and Africa. All my jewellery is in these boxes, including my necklaces. (I don't wear much jewellery so there isn't much to store. I don't wear earrings).

Nothing tangles up, surprisingly! My initial necklaces and one very dainty pearl pendant necklace get a small box each. The bigger boxes are for my chunky pearl necklaces. I keep my rings, bracelets and Yorkie brooch in these boxes too.

The boxes sit on the window sill of our WIW.

What I did with a bit of free wall space ( not on door) in my closet was to hang these slim rectangular perforated metal pinboards from the Container store. Use pushpins and small cylindrical magnets.
This works best for necklaces that are thin or at least the fastener area is thin.
A drawback is that this is open storage, so not protected from dust over time. Works best with items in frequent rotation and that could be wiped down ( e.g., not fabric/ fibers.
Also I use a top dresser drawer that is shallow- hence not as useful for my clothing- with some of those flocked jewelry organizer trays. I can stack 2, sometimes by removing the insert from its plastic base, so they take up less room.
However, I’m annoyed that I seem to be hanging on to some necklaces I no longer wear while wearing a few faves on repeat. And at same time, though I probably don’t really need any more, I have an idea of what type, material/colors, length I’d wear with some tops or outfits that my current faves don’t work with, if I could just find them, but I’d have to shop quite intentionally.

I considered a wall mounted armoire at one time because of the useful mirror. I totally get your point about not wanting to have everything out all the time. Here's one that demonstrates multiple uses for the armoire, including holding perfume and makeup (at Macy's). I hadn't thought of that! And it is lighted inside!

Don't know where I'd put it but I am very tempted.

I have limited storage in my new home so I hung them on the wall as if it's a piece of artwork. It's placed right beside the closet. You can see them all at the same time and they don't get tangled up. It's actually a focal point along with the painting and baskets...as you walk into the bedroom. I'm really pleased with the functionality and how it looks. I also did the same thing on another wall - partly behind the bedroom door..where I hang scarves. That's a little overcrowded... apparently I have too many scarves.

CARLA :). I keep my rings and earrings in a empty Ferrero Rocher chocolate box inner container in my top drawer. It is gold coloured and very sturdy. Works very well. I don't use it for necklaces though. LISA I have the same problem as you, and don't wear necklaces much, they are in an arb container and I need a plan. Years ago I hung up a key rack inside my wardrobe door and that worked well. It was an artsy piece with hand painted cats on it. Then I moved overseas and left it behind.

Well I have an Ikea wall closet and it has a slide out drawer with jewelry compartments. Plus I have one of those noisy things that hang on the door and clangs every time you open or close it .

I really really do not like to see jewellery displayed anywhere - I just don’t . Anna Newton posted about a box she has that necklaces sit in - a few layers of these tray stacked atop of one another inside a lovely plain wooden box - but it was $$$$$. And I’m not really fond of jewellery boxes anyways , to be honest . I’m thinking the mirrored frameless mini armoire thing will be just the ticket and can take the place of a regular framed mirror I have on the wall .

I have a bulletin board hung on the back of closet door; I use long push pins to hang them so that I can see them. This has been my best solution for me because I can see it all. Also has helped with culling what I have lost interest in...

I have the same necklace storage issues as you. Currently, I hang mine on a necklace stand, but they can jumble up from time to time. I also have a couple of others in their little satchels that are stored in a small lucite box. Not the ideal solution either.

I have a jewelry box with a mirror that sits on my dresser. The pictured item is not mine, but similar. I don’t have a lot of jewelry, so I just jumble everything inside the drawer. It’s not ideal, but does cut down on tarnishing. I’ve hung chains on the buttons on the supports, but they tarnish quickly. I probably need a better solution.

I use two methods. The first is a Shaker-style wooden rack with with seven posts for sturdy necklaces. You can see I have matching watches on the posts. The second is a thrifted jewelry box that has hooks on the lid with a fabric pocket for delicate necklaces. When you close the box, the necklace stays in the pocket.

I used to have the velvet stand for watches and bracelets, but I gave away so many that I no longer needed it.
