I found it troubling, because it perpetuates what it purports to decry, and in the listing of (impossible) accomplishments, adds another layer of objectification.

I understand the purpose, and support the purpose. But I don't like the video itself.

I support the concept... Let me tell you I am always hopping mad because people assume I am inexperienced because I look young. Just the other day after nearly chewing my unsuspecting DH's head off he told me something I will forever remember: " You know what you are and you can be what you want to be. You don't need to prove it to me, or to any random strangers." I will forever remember that!!

IK, I rolled my eyes at the supposed running CEO. Every woman I know who is a runner, especially ones who are financially well-off, sports real running gear (especially Lululemon) and not cutoff tops and booty shorts.

Janet, yes. The other thing for me is that women the age of the young women in the video have not had the time to be that accomplished. How many of us could get a Ph.D or become CEO or "whatever" by 22 ?

Anna, that makes me sad. You made me realize that being "accomplished" has nothing to do with degrees or "success" in the tradiotional sense. You help save lives and prolong them. That is absolutely "accomplished".

Isabel, Astrid, and Dana, I heartily concur. I agree with the sentiment, but this video falls flat in conveying the message. Talk about mixed messages.

I am annoyed that the slight nod to diversity in the women extends only to their skin and hair color -- otherwise, they all have the exact same body type -- extremely thin and model tall. As if the rest of us are immune to objectification. And you're only worth not objectifying if you are as accomplished as these women? (Which, of course, I don't believe anyway -- they all look to be models/actresses)

Yeah, not only do I feel inferior for not looking like them, but for not being as kickass as them too. :-P

It gets a big giant meh from me. Feminism, ur doin it wrong.

A few thoughts.

1- This video is taking women of (reported) power and consequence and putting them into T&A shots. Since I have no context for them aside from the video, tell me how I am supposed to assume *anything* about them, other than they are good-looking women. That's not objectification. That's synthesizing information from what I'm given.

2 - Yes, she may be a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. But if she's in a cutoff tank and booty shorts, she isn't dressed like one. She's not giving off the cues that allow me to place her in that context, so don't blame me if I assume she's a co-ed out for a jog. I'd do the same for some really hot guy, too.

I guess the video wants us to look past the surface into what lies beyond. But surface is a *huge* part of how we gauge social status and roles. Our interpretation varies according to our culture and experience. So, in short, I think the video is not really playing fair -- yes, women can be skilled powerful, intelligent, *and* hot. But almost all of these women are broadcasting solely on the "hot" frequency. Blaming the viewer for catching the most obvious cues seems unfair.

What happened for me when I watched this video is that I was left with a lot of questions. Like the rest of you, I can't say that this video addresses this subject in the way I felt it should.

Is this so bothersome to me because I wish that this weren't how people see women, but they do? Can I honestly tell myself that strangers don't just view me as parts? Is the issue that all the women in this video are all within the same narrow margins of what may be considered sexy? That they all appear to be young, and thin, and light skinned? How can women win if being pretty and successful is essentially adding fuel to the fire, but getting ahead without being good-looking seems to be such an uphill battle? Do some women dress frumpily to combat this type of thing? Is that a good idea, or a bad one? Does this video essentially say that you have to earn the right not to be objectified? Do women who date other women feel these same pressures as much, or maybe more, or less? Why might that be? Is the problem that Norma Kamali herself has been a part of an industry that objectifies women for so long, that she no longer realizes why this might be the wrong way to address the topic? Is it because Norma Kamali is also thin, fashionable, successful, and pretty, that she thinks this works? Do I myself objectify women, when I read magazines with these types of images, or when I complement someone on her figure or her hair? For that matter, am I objectifying men when I lean over to my friend at a bar, and point out the cute guy in the tight jeans? If so, is that somehow ok because I'm a woman and it represents a reversal in roles? Isn't it natural for us to objectify people, at least when they're strangers? Aren't we designed to make snap judgments?

I could probably go on forever, but what I loved about this video is that it did draw my attention to this issue again. It led me to ask myself questions, and to try to find answers. Sorry for the very long post, but as I said, this one was really thought-provoking for me.

To me this video sends the message that objectification is only a problem for gorgeous looking women and not an unfortunately real issue for all kind of women in everyday life. What if you are not as good looking and don't have any special achivements? You can still be objectified. This says, look however else she succeeded in life! She's not only beautiful, she also got brains. Well, what if I don't succeed in anything? I still have the right to be treated not as an object but a human being.

I witnessed a perfect example for how objectification of women is accepted or not even recognized by people nowadays last week when my younger female cousin (she's 19) posted a link to a Youtube video on Facebook. It was produced by a travel business for those party trips, she went on one of their trips with some friends last year. From what I could read in her post she didn't know those party pictures the photographer took would end up in an official video, she only found it when someone else made her aware she was in it. Well anyway, the video starts with about half a minute of maybe ten to fifteen twenty year old males sitting in a round (being totally plastered) and yelling the most offensive, demeaning and sexist little song in chorus, on endless repeat. Followed of pictures by my cousin and other girls on the party. And the only comments this got (by well educated people my age!) was along the lines of "Wow, didn't we look hot?", "You're such cuties!" and some males repeating parts of the song in their comments. I really was sitting there before my screen scratching my head and feeling very out of sorts that from all the people who commented I seemed to be the only one bothered with this.

I think that I feel like the rest of you : support the concept, but not the video. It just seems....inappropriate. Those women are very young and very skinny and most of us don't dress that way. So presenting a non-representive set of women to make a point to represent us in general...is almost insulting. I want to feel good about the video but I don't. Does that make sense ?

@ClaraT - I actually had exactly the same reaction you did initially, and I've gone through a whole string of back and forth thought processes since. I'm still not sure how I feel, but I do know that it touched on an issue that I think impacts us all deeply. I'm dashing off to meet some friends, but I do plan to stop back in as soon as I can to add to this, because I thought it was really interesting.

My first reaction to this video is that Norma Kamali is herself objectifying women and then asking people to think about objectification. She shows only parts of most of the women, i.e. thighs, breasts, swinging/dancing rear and torso and lips (basically sexualizing them), while listing their accomplishments.
I'm interested in how this resonated with you, Florence. While (do I even have to say it?) I support the goal of this video, I'm not sure that I understand the rationale or agree that this is a way to convince others not to objectify women.
I do think this is a topic that merits discussion, as the main idea here/in fashion is that our clothes/our appearance are one important way that we communicate information about ourselves. We want to be valued for more than our appearance (and we are!) but how we look is often the first thing that other people use to assess us, whether we like it or not. Thanks for posting.

I just clicked through to the Kamali site after reading Parsley's WIW today, and came across this video.
