I nearly always wear stockings and suspenders,(garters). I buy my suspenders from Stockings HQ or Pip and Patillimon. My stockings are usually from Marks and Spencer or John Lewis.I do wear pantyhose/tights now and again, but I do like opaque tights with a shorter skirt and boots for the winter months,XXX

I wore Hanes also (loved the shade Little Color), back in my suit-wearing days. I think you can get them at Penneys or Kohls as well as those stores listed above. Nowadays I also get the stomach ache thing with anything that presses on my stomach or waist for too long - and I tend to go loose so it's not a too tight thing - so I avoid them at all cost!

Aziraphale--LOL!

I get Nordstrom light nude now; also have for years Hanes SR but changed to either Nude or Natural; and also found Calvin Klein one of the best super sheer looks but cannot remember color.

I store them in ziplock bag for each pair and have to remember to label size and color if I try a new brand because I always forget, and it drives me crazy that they're not labeled inside, then when I want to duplicate or get multiples on sale I'm going, hmm, did I get my " real" size, or size up, and what color was that?!

Once you determine which Hanes shade you prefer (for me it is also Travel Buff) you can reorder online at a good price from Onehanesplace. Hose will come bundled in a pouch rather than a cardboard sleeve.

I try to give the brick and mortar Macy's near me my custom for such routine items, but they are forfeiting their chance by not reliably carrying all shades /sizes.

I used to wear Hanes and like you, BrieN, took scissors to the waistband, but I now wear Commando Up All Night black thigh-highs for most of the colder months and go bare-legged the rest of the year. When I need a sheer look (e.g., with a formal suit), I wear Donna Karan's Lace Top Stay-Up Stockings in Nude, which I haven't had to replace yet, although I've only needed to wear them a few times so far.

The department stores I listed had those rings of color samples. Even if all of the colors weren't available at the moment, you could at least see which ones were a good match. I slipped my hand inside the closer ones and got a pretty good match that way. IIRC Silk Reflections has a lot of options, including no control top. Or at least similar Hanes products without.

It appears the consensus is Hanes silk reflections, which upon reflection, is the brand I used to wear back in the day with my suits...and I think I remember taking scissors on the top to make them more comfortable. I think I wore travel buff... Where would you buy this brand in person? I'd like to see the colors before I purchase. I will compare the Hanes and the Luxe pair I purchased before and report back if I learn anything of interest. But there is no way I'm wearing control top, so if that's my only option, I'm sticking with the brand I have!

Gah. Pantyhose. They make your legs look fabulous, but in all other ways they suck. They are uncomfortable; they leave a deeply unsexy squiggly imprint up your belly; they cause static cling between your legs and your skirt, necessitating a slip; they are hot in the summer and don't keep you warm enough in the winter; and they give you a segmented abdomen, like an insect, unless you have a dead flat and fat-free stomach area. Bleh. Sooooo to answer your questions:

Do you wear pantyhose or stockings at all? Yes. Under duress. (For some occasions, the outfit doesn't feel complete without pantyhose).

Where do you purchase them? The Bay, normally. (Big Canadian department store). I don't think I've ever bought any from a supermarket or drugstore.

What's a typical price per pair? Um...maybe $14? $16? I can't remember. I don't buy them very often.

How long do they last for you? I'm lucky if I get two or three wears out of them before they develop a ladder.

I've discovered a few work-arounds, though.

1. My upper thighs seem less sensitive to squinching than my midsection, so thigh-highs are often a good solution to the problem. There was one memorable occasion, however, when my left thigh-high decided it was no longer interested in clinging to my leg for the evening, and I had to walk down Main street holding it up, through my dress, with my hand. So I've learned to pack an extra pair in my handbag or pocket, just in case. Also, good thigh-highs are harder to find than normal pantyhose.

2. I can get away with pantyhose if (a) I go up one size (I buy a size marked for women six inches taller and forty pounds heavier than me, which seems absurd), (b) I don't have to wear them for more than six hours, and (c) I make sure to avoid control-top. Control top stockings are the work of Satan. I mean, they do a bang-up job of controlling your "top", as long as you're OK with whatever's not covered by the pantyhose squishing out over the waistband like rising bread dough.

I could have written the same reply as several of you--Hanes Little Color. There was a second slightly darker color I also wore--can't remember what it was. The department stores used to have special sales and some had reward cards--buy so many and get one free.

I have a drawer full of pantyhose--I go through them once a year and try to get eliminate some, but there is always a "just in case" in my brain.

Truth is that it has been 1 1/2 years since I wore pantyhose, and that was at a wedding. I don't plan on wearing them again, I'm giving up on dresses and most skirts. Still, I keep my drawer full of them, ready for who knows what.

If control top gives you a stomach ache, you are buying too small a size. Some writer in a fashion magazine once advised every woman to buy queen sized stockings (plus size). This did not work for me, (just too big) but the sizing up idea was good. You do not want to feel like a sausage

Thank you for the information - this is very helpful to me. I might have to try the freezer and the white cotton gloves as I do tend to snag my hose as I put them on. I don't think I've ever had a pair last for more than 5-6 wears.
I won't wear control top hose, though, they give me a stomachache. Am I the only one?

Waaay back when I worked in an office and needed to dress up daily, Hanes Silk Reflections Control Top were my go to daily wear brand. And I stocked up during sales. It's been so long since I've bought them I don't remember the cost, I just know they washed well and I did get several wears from each pair. They had a nude color that was a perfect match for my skin tone.

Regarding snags from nails, I took a tip from an article I read and purchased an inexpensive pair of white cotton gloves to wear when putting on my pantyhose. Worked great and I still have and use the gloves on the rare occasions I wear pantyhose.

I also wear Hanes Silk Reflections, one of the palest colors - "Travel Buff." Those Hanes are pretty standard at typical department stores (Macy's, JCPenney, Dillards.) The darker tan colors are more common, but lots of colors are out there. They're not restocked frequently, though, so I ordered three pair off Amazon a month ago. I got a good deal, about $9/pr, and were shipped from a Belk's. They're good hose, very smooth with a good amount of stretch, not uncomfortably tight. I like a control top and it's a good one.

My hose tends to last for at least a couple months of regular use. I've worn them a lot so I tend to be careful putting them on and wearing them. Usually when I snag them it's because I didn't realize I had a rough nail or peeling callus on my fingertip. I'm careful about rough spots in my shoes, too. The most typical place for holes is my big toe (I also get reinforced toe for this reason) and the inside of the thigh, since mine tend to get thin/stretched there. I keep clear nail polish handy both at home and in my desk at work. I don't mind wearing hose with non-visible small runs or holes.

When I worked I wore Hanes Silk Reflections control top sheer panty hose. I bought them at Macy's in Little Color, I think. They were very pale. I definitely didn't look like I had a tan. I also had sheer navy, black and off white. Macy's had a "club" and if you bought a dozen pairs you got a big discount. Sometimes I ruined them the first day. But I had one pair I wore for months. They were magic.

I wear them and usually look for sales at Marshalls/TJMaxx and try to find a beige. I like to buy tall sizes best, even though I am 5'3". They don't have to be pulled as much and stay put because they are long enough. Mine last for a couple of years if I keep my toenails trimmed and smooth and rinse them in cold water as soon as I take them off. I also put them in the freezer at least over night before wearing the first time. I've heard that this extends their life, but don't know if it works. I have no complaints. I buy them as sheer as possible with little or no shine.

I wear pantyhose to the office from time to time, and have been looking to find the right color and quality for an affordable price. The color of most drugstore stockings seem to run toward "suntan" which doesn't suit me, especially this time of year, but I did find a pair of pantyhose at Walgreens that I like. They are the westloop Luxe in Beige Mist. They are more silky than I expected from drugstore pantyhose. I also purchased them in the off black but haven't worn them yet.
