Elizabeth P these are helpful suggestions, thanks!

I do need to up my spring jacket game. But, I don't really enjoy wearing jackets, and find them hard to fit, so a chore to shop for...

A bit late to this but I really enjoyed the thread so thought I should contribute.

Spring transitional dressing used to be really tough for me, I just had no idea what to do and and didn't have the clothes. But now it's become one of my favourite times!

So what do I do?

- Well, I wear a lot of black and navy in the winter, so my palette brightens up. White jeans, "happy" coloured tops (your happy colours will be different than mine, I tend to go for saturated things).

- My ankles come out. Gone with booties, out with fashion sneakers, loafers, oxfords, etc. Pants get rolled, and I start wearing crops.

- I'm a knit fan, esp for work from home, so I have several linen, cotton or silk 3/4 sleeve sweaters.

- And lightweight toppers and jackets get worn. In the winter I am wearing a coat, so unless a jacket is part of an outfit, it's not worn. Spring is when I enjoy wearing denim and leather jackets as outerwear.

I think these are all things one can do to "transition" regardless of your personal style.

Oh Sal, just realized that I lost track of responding to your comment! Thank you for commiserating with me about the difficulty of items that should work but don't! I think you are right that these items lack some kind of "me" spark. I am tickled to hear you describe my wardrobe as having a sense of fun as I can be kind of a relentlessly serious person. ;-p And yes to rocking the items that work for you, you are right fashion is funny like that but it's wonderful that we have so many options.

Brooklyn these are good suggestions! The thing about jeans is I think on reflection I am really wanting something lighter weight than denim for a bit of variety once the weather warms up. I do love Liberty prints! Here, J Crew has a longstanding collaboration with Liberty prints items offered each season. For whatever reason I have not paid too much attention to any pants on offer but I will definitely look into that now!

I know this feeling with pieces that “should work” but don’t. And when they are essentials they do have to be right.

Probably 9 months of my year would be your transitional weather.

I think these pieces don’t have the fun or spark that your clothes tend to have - you could style them to have that - but they just aren’t quite you.

I am a fan of joggers and leggings. I feel good in leggings but never felt that way in skinny jeans. Fashion and style can be funny like that!!

Apologies, I haven’t read the other comments, so it may have been suggested already, but have you thought about coloured denim? More structured than joggers. I’m thinking skinnies or straight leg leans in a light colour like turquoise or mint green? Could you do printed jeans/cropped pants? There is a store here that does Liberty print items. I know you like Liberty print. Some Liberty print pants could be a good casual but interesting look.

ETA, a couple of examples of Liberty pants.

Oh, flannel shirts are a good idea Runcarla! A lot of my shirts are quite lightweight cotton or cotton/silk and, despite being long sleeved, wouldn't be warm enough for me on their own in the temps I'm thinking of. But flannel just might be!

Like Janet, I wasn’t a fan of joggers until I found ones in a fabrication that looked ‘elevated’ to me. I still have a ‘poison eye’ for the grey cotton sweatpants style, but the gathered cuff at the ankle style of a pant is not something I rule out for myself.

At this stage of my style journey I want some different pants silouhettes, instead of all the straight leg crops I’ve collected. One pair of joggers, one pair of wide legs, one pair of pegged (or carrot, or barrel) leg, even one pair of Capri length (and I know these get roasted on social media!)

For transitional weather I prefer cotton knit sweaters to wool or cashmere, and I have two flannel button downs that work a trick! The button downs have structure, and I can pop the collar and roll or push up the sleeves, yet the flannel is soft against my body, and warm.

PS: I didn’t take any of the joggers dislikes as an across the board dislike statement, but as a ‘for me’ type of statement.

It wasn’t directed at you personally LJP and I even put a general apology within my comment. Getting upset about things you like that others don’t seems a difficult stance to take on a fashion forum where people are bound to disagree about what they like. If SarahD8 had shown a picture of herself wearing them I would not be critical. You’ve made your own opinions about others known quite clearly in the past. I have never criticised you for liking joggers.

JenniNZ oh right it’s not exactly time for transitional wear where you are! Will be interesting to see how you feel about the look when the season turns.

Janet and Angie I wear knit joggers (sweatpants!) as gear/loungewear too. And I am still sorta intrigued by the idea of fancy joggers (which is why I caveated above with “for my casual style). It’s actually the middle sort, casual but woven joggers, that Janet likes that I seem to be struggling with. I think? More saturated colors as you mention might do the trick… But it is interesting how individual presences vary.

Along those lines, LJP I think you look great in your joggers and cargoes and so on! I just don’t seem to be able to rock them in the same way. So to be clear when I say I don’t like them I mean *for me* and *I* feel/feel that I look sloppy in them. I tried to be pretty careful about my wording in my first post but as the thread progressed I got a little, well, sloppy (ba-dum-ching) and maybe drew us off course….

Jenni , you’ve commented before how you don’t care for members sharing opinions about what is ok and what isn’t . Yet - you’ve stated that joggers look floppy and sloppy to you . I happen to really love joggers , and cargo pants , and all other manner of fun pants and think they look great ! I think it’s a lot better if critical comments about certain styles are kept to one’s self .

Angie, I do Pilates, run, and yoga in capri and long tights/leggings, and that’s it as far as leggings go for me! Whenever I’ve tried them, they mostly go unworn, so leggings are gear-only for me.

It is indeed interesting to see how many folks here don’t like joggers! For me, I didn’t love them until I found them in fabrications that got away from the traditional sweatpant or jersey fabrications. I have some of those that are strictly around-the-house wear. But I love my tencel and other woven joggers — they don’t look like workout or lounge wear, have a bit more structure, come in more saturated (not heathered) colors, and don’t tend to bag out so much. But I love the looseness and ease and hate wearing leggings, so there you go! I leave the leggings to the jogger haters! It seems we kind of tend to gravitate to one or the other, LOL.

I don’t know? It was actually just bought for that and I haven’t counted it in my wardrobe- I thought a thrifted $5 dress and new $10 leggings could just be a give away afterwards. But I do quite like the outfit and I even have suitable toppers- so I’ll decide next summer. They’re folded up on a shelf meanwhile!

JenniNZ one of the big surprises of this thread for me has been how many people have shared that they don't like joggers or cargo pants either. Those styles have been SO ubiquitous at retail lately that I just thought everyone else was out there enjoying them!

I like that cropped leggings + short dress on you -- do you have any plans to wear it now that the event you bought it for is over?

Well I don’t like joggers at all. They just always look floppy/sloppy to me. (Sorry to all Fabbers who like them!) I actually bought a pair about 3-4 years ago in another attempt, since the whole forum kept talking about “loungewear”- they were Sabatini, a fancy NZ brand that has outlet factory sales, and were a bit elevated since they had leather on the edge of the pockets. I just couldn’t do it and feel like me. I ended up donating to DD2 who they are a bit big on, but she has just worn them *so much*. She finds them really comfortable. She is one who changes to leave the house. Basically I don’t, I want to have the same comfort and style whether I am here or out.
I live in my ponte pants, have elevated ones for work and more casual ones for home which I would happily wear out shopping. Some are thinner fabric than others. I could see your cropped leggings idea work too? I bought these white ones for $10 to wear under my thrifted yellow dress for the Haldi ceremony I went to recently.

Jules that's a great point about the muted colors here. I happily wear a lot of navy throughout the spring and summer but it's usually a bright, saturated navy, and I bet that's the difference. I wear very little gray in the summer and maybe it doesn't belong in my transitional season (which, honestly, I should just call "cool summer") palette either. Funny enough, I was sort of aware of that about my preference for saturated colors -- it's what's kept me from adding olive bottoms, because I know I'm only interested in a very cool, saturated olive that's quite scarce. But I didn't really think about it as applied to navy which I think of as much less "tricky" overall.

Angie thanks for the love for the overalls outfit! The pic is from last summer but I'll definitely repeat the look this year (I don't own the shoes anymore -- they gave me blisters -- but I have a pair of black woven/perforated oxfords that could sub in.) Funny, the colors you are suggesting have really not been in my palette at all -- at least not on the bottom. But time to reconsider! I really only need 2-3 pairs that I TRULY enjoy. I can do this!

Yep, my lightweight linen mix utility style joggers didn’t last long due to the sloppiness factor. I am tired of the pants I am wearing during transitional weather as I also wear them in our mild winters but in the morning I am too cold for my crops. I tend to either change out of my warm top later in the day or wear a lightweight long or 3/4 sleeve shirt or top with either a sweater or long soft sleeveless waterfall type gilet that I remove when it warms up.

Summer has hit Seattle - again! - so you don't need to worry about transitional for a while ....... ;)

I also say no thank you to joggers, but enjoy the odd pair of cargos and utility pants! Good for beach days and trail days with the doggies or SUPER casual days at home. LOVE barrel pants and '80s pleated pants. Love '70s wide pants too.

I'm nodding along with Suz, who lives in the same climate as us! LOVE her dressy jogger--pants!

Nodding along with Janet, on trying barrel and lantern pants.

Nodding along with LJP on the palette switch.

I'm going to suggest ecru jeans!!! I wear ecru and white jeans in transitional weather and love it. You can wear them in Autumn too.

Next I'm going to suggest oatmeal and blush bottoms. Mine are dressy, but you can go casual.

I also wear white chinos. VERY handy! And more Summery. Wearing them today.

Midi dresses with cardigans are good.

Midi skirts and cropped cotton sweaters with denim jackets work well too. Trench in the morning though.

You need a LARGE assortment of toppers when you live in Seattle and lead an urban walking life. All sorts for all sorts of weather. That makes a huge difference to comfort levels. I'm outside ALL the time so that's why I'm encouraging it.

CLOSED SHOES!!! But not boots.

Just a gut reaction here that all 3 pieces read very casual - not just in cut but due to the heathered/faded colours. The sweater is nice but heathered grey always reminds me of very basic gym gear (although I know it trends sometimes, and I actually do like it, that's my primary association). Maybe you prefer more saturated shades (whether neutral or coloured)?

Joy typical summer weather here is high 70s to low 80s, though we do get days hotter than that. I like to switch up my color palette as the seasons change too!

Dee ahh I am glad to see I'm not alone on the distaste for joggers/cargos. The weather has been super nice her this week so yes, I'm taking full enjoyment of my sundresses! Just trying to do a postmortem on the spring transitional season so I can try to be more prepared when the weather starts to turn in fall...

Janet no thanks on the trade! Lol. I lived in the Baltimore/DC area for some years so I feel that I've done my "hot and muggy" time. I do wear jeans but I guess I was just jonesing for something a bit lighter weight here. But you're right, if I don't like joggers and I don't like chinos what else is left? I do like your suggestion of a gentle balloon pant (or, lantern pant??). I'll keep a lookout!

NancyW and RobinF thank you for the endorsement of my sewing efforts! I feel inspired!

suntiger oooh yes I like those palazzo type pants that you posted. Nice and simple. Adding to my mental search image...

I struggle with transitional weather dressing too- but have had luck this year with thin wide leg pants being on trend. Here are 2 I bought this year.

For tops- blouses, open weave sweaters, and short/elbow sleeve tops.

Normally our weather goes from cold to hot and humid quickly, but we've had a lot of very mild weather this year.

Great analysis and plan. I also struggle with transitional weather, we generally have very short transitional seasons here in Michigan but when you need it you need it. I'm with you on floppy joggers - I have some I just wear for home because they are very comfy but too sloppy to wear out. I think your idea of removing the tabs on the blue pants is good, they look really cute. And the overalls are great on you.

Agree to everything above regarding color and the softness of the waffle weave. Trying your summer scarves over the top sounds good. I have a pair of Athleta Brooklyn joggers that I like very much, but have never tried another pair that felt right on me. And I have tried many joggers and cargos because they look so great on others! I remove all button tabs on blouses (and fold up all the cuffs all the time!) and wouldn’t be comfortable in rolled tabs or elastic cords: I think they are variations on the theme of joggers! Also, too fussy for me. So consider removing the tabs and adjusting the length, nothing to lose there, and book a time with yourself to mend those cute overalls!

Ok, so first off, can we trade weather please? I’ll take all the transitional dressing and you can have the countless days we have of “it’s too darn warm and muggy for a jacket.” :-D

I hear you on the desire for structure though. These pieces you’ve identified definitely lack that quality and you’ve done some great analysis here of what makes you feel less than fab in them.

I love joggers or cargos for a touch of ease but the fabrication and details need to be right. I also rely heavily on jeans but it sounds like you don’t really wear them. For me, a good boyfriend jean in a not too baggy fit helps provide a bit of structure plus ease — always a balancing act I’m seeking!

I realize we are total style opposites (I don’t wear overalls or leggings, so I really can’t relate to those preferences), so my approaches may be totally useless for you, LOL.

How about a structured but looser pant silhouette like some of the more gentle balloon shapes available now? Something akin to these? I know Angie would know of more sources for this kind of style.

Yes, I have tried those type of joggers myself thinking they'd be comfy and on trend but they just felt sloppy on me too and I agree that cargos with the extra pockets are just too much bulk as well.

I also find those waffle weave type sweaters especially in cotton are just not enough structure either and I have to pay particular attention to the sweater's neckline as well, if it's too wide or loose, it just feels sloppy.

I think you're on the right track about needing a more streamlined, and a slightly structured fit for this transitional period. Your overalls look great, casual yet structured, so I'd say its time to get those back into the rotation as soon as possible. Knowing why these items don't work is so helpful when going forward with your next purchases. Hopefully the warm summer weather arrives back soon for you to enjoy your dresses again.

It looks like you have picked more transitional pieces, although farther into the season. How hot do summers get? I still struggle with transitional times. I went from no transitional pieces tons ing it be the major season. I used to have nothing with sleeves…..short or long. I have added sleeved tops, including sweaters of various sleeve lengths and wool to cotton to linen to the wardrobe for transitional times and more toppers. Think about this a lot. You may need to make mini seasons out of transitions, some closer to hot weather and some for cooler times. Your colors will be different for spring and fall, including a light and a dark neutral and accessories. I make myself wait for the correct season to wear what items delegated to the correct season. That way, they become a welcome change. Now, in spring ( so far only one day seemed like summer). I have been wearing warm spring colors like bottoms in white, cream. (light neutrals) cition green, navy ( my dark neutral) and a little pale grey. Accessories are mostly full length pants, bees, butterflies, flowers and scarves with spring colors and themes. The boots and booties have been packed away. I wear mostly loafers and ballet flats, sometimes sneakers. I will morph into hot summer by wearing captors and more skirts, sleeveless tops, accessories become more beachhead…shells and sea animals, coral and pearls. I will use navy and late summer black as dark neutrals and whites as light neutrals, the red, white and blue will be coral, navy and white. Footwear will be flat edpedrilles and perforated leather with bare feet.
For fall I will wear fall colors, gold, rust, orange, olive. Browns, dark and light, will be neutrals and shoe colors, socks and boots will gradually reappear, pants will return to full length. Accessories are birds, leaves, more metallic gold. Winter means more grey and black. Neutrals will be paired with more neutrals. More bright colors will be worn between Thanksgiving and New Years Eve. I Will be sick of brights and wear lots of neutrals gladly. Accent colors will be red and denim blue. Accessories will be snow flakes, holiday themes, lots of warm sweaters, flannel shirts over tees, boots and booties, daily. Heavy pants in fleece or even snow pants. Velvet is welcomed back and burgundy accents. Heavy Icelandic sweaters take the place of most other patterns, except plaid. I hope this helps .

LJP well I'm glad to be in good company struggling with this! Ooh, I think you're right about color. Actually I think the problem here might be lack of it -- I often feel rather blah in neutral -heavy outfits.

Suz yes, I was actually kind of mourning the loss of Juneuary (climate change and all) and then it arrived last week -- threw me for a loop! Thanks for sharing your solutions. I have been thinking that I need to reacquaint myself with my summer scarves and your post is reinforcing that. But it's also making me realize that oddly, I think need to dress more warmly for at home (bc I'm more sedentary??) than for going out. Hmmmmm.

Jessikams thank you for commiserating re the feeling of not really liking something one wears a lot (and the difficulty of finding what one really wants to wear).

And Jaime thanks for being on Team No Thanks To Joggers with me!

Bj1111 agreed that these items are un-coolly baggy! I've owned a pair of chinos from time to time over the years but I always pass them on as I never seem to feel right in them. Something about not knowing what shoes to wear, and not liking all that material flapping about around my ankles. That's partly why I thought joggers would be a slam dunk! But maybe time to try again, perhaps in a different cut ...

ETA Suz I looove your new joggers! In that fabrication they are almost bloomers of a sort (a very cool sort). Very Charlotte Ritter, if you're a fan of Babylon Berlin.
