Wow. Gretchen has some beautiful bags.

The 12" or 24" inch drop on my bags is to the top of the bag.

I had to Google what a strap drop meant! I have just changed bags at New Year because my trusty cognac one from late 2016 was really looking badly worn. I bought the replacement in October but wanted to wait until proper summer to use it.
My old cognac one I had adjusted to a 17 inch drop, and the new bronze one is adjusted to a 16 inch drop. I am short at 5 foot 1 or 5 foot 2 on a good day. I like to wear them over one shoulder but adjust to cross-body if walking a lot or in a less secure location.
More important to me is that they have one outside pocket for my car keys and a suitable inside pocket for my phone plus another zippered inside pocket for extra cards. These requirements have meant I cannot seem to find a luxury handbag even if I wanted one. I looked in luxury airport stores but they are all smooth on the outside, no pockets.
Here is my new non-luxury, non-leather bag.

I’m with Suz - I much prefer a shorter strap so I can tuck the bag close under my arm or balance on at my elbow. I do have a couple tiny cross bodies, and those hit right at my waist when I wear them properly.

A 44 inch strap seems to translate to a 24 inch drop. Anyway, I look for either of those measurements.

I also have this style of Sak bag (in pink!).

I am with you I. Liking a bag that fits under the arm best but have a wide variety. I liked cross body that could transform into a clutch best for a long time because they were light weight and could lie in my lap going out for dinner and were not forgotten. Now I need something larger most of the time to carry medical stuff and nylon shopping bags. Now my favorite style is a tote or satchel with straps long enough to be worn on the shoulder nestled under the arm or carried on the arm. Sometimes I use two bags at once, a small crossbody and a waist bag.

I like a shorter strap than many, I suspect -- partly because I'm smaller and partly because then I keep the bag sort of nestled in beneath my arm. I agree it's a crucial aspect of bag happiness. I love the look of satchels, for example, but don't like carrying a bag in my hand, and find the longer straps on satchels mostly to be far too long for me. So I usually end up with a less structured bag than might be ideal for me.

In the ones below, I can reach in to get my keys or phone singled handed. (As long as I keep the bag organized and know where those are). I also use backpacks at times, but those I have to remove to retrieve anything.

Thanks for the good advice!

JAileen and Sterling, is that 24 inch drop to the top of the bag or the bottom? I measured and I think I would like that as being the bottom. The one I just returned I think that hits about where the top of that bag fell, and then because it was tall, the bottom was about 4 inches above my knee. Too long! It did what Cardiff Girl described...awkward. Laura, yes, I need one handed use!

Slim Cat and JAileen, thanks for the links but I think that bag is more sporty looking than I currently want. But I appreciate the thought!

Runcarla, good advice on strap width too. I'll look out for that.

Hereforethecake and notsaf, I definitely would have tried that if it was already mine and in use, I just wasn't going to risk it on a brand new one. Good suggestion.

I prefer the infinitely adjustable straps too, and have them on most of my bags. It’s not something you see in higher end bags very often though. I’m tall and big so I often find totes and shoulder bags that don’t have a big enough drop - I want to be able to put my bag on my shoulder with one arm which requires a bit more room than if you put it on with the opposite hand.

Strap width. Of course it makes sense that a wider strap would be more comfortable because it would not dig into your shoulder. I personally have not had an issue with width. It always comes down to the weight of the bag for me. Reviewing my bag collection, all of the bags feather narrower straps. I seem to like the look of the narrower strap.

Hereforthecake offers a wonderful solution. A solution I never would have thought of on my own.

Hmm, come to think of it, the reason I’ve stopped looking for bags is because I’ve found one that ‘fits’ and it is mainly because the width and
length of the strap makes it really easy to carry! The strap is on the wider side and curved, which keeps it on my shoulder and tucked under my arm,but it’s not so long that it drags on the ground when I carry it in my hand.

I’m able to switch up straps on some of my bags, but not all bags allow this. I put a wider and shorter strap on my Harvey’s bag, since the long strap it came with was quite narrow and dug into my shoulder. A small leather cross body came with 2 different straps of different lengths and widths. The striped guitar strap works with two other bags.

I had a bag a few years ago that I dearly loved, but because I'm short, this is a common problem for me!

I brought my bag to a shoe maker/cobber and he shortened it and it looked fab! He did it in such as way that it was pretty much invisible.

Just a thought.

I like the bag to hit me no lower than top of hip.If I can’t reach into it easily or if it bounces about all over the place as I walk ,that drives me mad , similarly I don’t like the strap too short either as I feel constricted.

Fascinating question. I have a wide variety of bags. Some are totes (12" drop) and some are shoulder or cross body (24" inch drop). The straps are adjustable on some and not on others. The fact that they all measure 24" cannot be by accident. It must be the most comfortable length for me. I am 5'9" and the shoulder or cross body bags hit me exactly at my hip.

DO NOT compromise on this. Find exactly what makes you happiest. Best wishes.

I’m 5’6” and like a strap drop of 24 inches. The long length allows for fitting over puffy coats, etc. The Sak bags I have, like Slim Cat’s, have straps that are infinitely adjustable. I’ve been really enjoying my navy one with a guitar strap, but the bag is starting to show wear. :(

https://www.macys.com/shop/pro.....078&a

Still on my bag hunt. It's been 6+ months and I still haven't found The One...and since I'm not one to collect bags I'm still hoping to hold out for true love.

I had high hopes for this one. It has the 3 inside pockets in the configuration I like best, plus one outside one. The color would work well for me and I like the shape. Unfortunately the strap length was a deal breaker. That model must be quite tall because I'm 5.5 and the top of the bag hits my low hip worn on the shoulder. The bottom of the bag is down to mid-thigh, almost close to knees. I couldn't just reach my hand in to get something, I'd have to take it off my shoulder and do it two handed.

I know it is intended to be both shoulder and cross body, but it's even quite long cross body and I wouldn't want to wear it that way most of the time. I could take it for extra hole punching but I pulled it up to the length I think I would want and that would leave more than a foot of extra strap hanging off. I think any cutting and repair to shorten it would be obvious so I returned it already.

My current (quite worn) bag hangs kind of underarm length. The bottom settles right at my waist. I'd say that's a flattering length because it fits against the body instead of bouncing along at hip level, but the downside is having to slip one strap off and crank my arm up if I want to get something out while my other hand is full. And this is a usage that happens routinely...getting keys out while my arms are full of other things.

So...all you experts: what have you found to suit you best as far a strap length, and why? Thanks!!
