As a mum of a young one i lie in jeans tees and hoodies/cardigans!

Tees: interesting colours/patterns are always good, I love geeky tees to do with my interests and it's a bonus when they spark a conversation!

Hoodies, knit jumpers and cardigans are versatile, and I'd invest in a coat one or two sizes too big (but still a fitted shape) so that it fits over the hoodie! I have a few lighter coats, a leather moto, and a couple of slightly thicker casual jackets with hoods (I found them in the men's section - means they're long enough to avoid gaps, but still relatively fitted).

Shoes, I can't help with, I tend to live in heeled boots, but if you'e very active they're not always practical!

This is basically the problem I had when I joined YLF. I could dress myself for work just fine, but my casual style was a mess. It took awhile but I'm finally happy with both my work and casual styles right now. I think your capsule sounds reasonable. I would make sure the tees are interesting - pattern or cut, and also wear interesting shoes. I generally wear boots in the winter, slip-on sneakers in the fall and spring, and sandals in the summer. Also, I make sure I still accessorize on the weekends - usually smaller, daintier necklaces that won't get in the way while doing housework or cooking, wrap bracelets, or earrings. I don't wear scarves as much because they get in the way and I end up taking them off.

I am a Mum and on weekends I wear jeans, casual dresses and denim skirts. I recently bought these grey jeans which are very versatile, because they look olive when worn with green tones and more grey with blacks and reds.

For toppers, casual jackets are good and also simple knits. Boots are my default footwear in cooler weather.

Have you been heard of Evy’s Tree. They are on online shop that was started by a mom and they sell what they call luxury sweatshirts. They have evolved to all sorts of tops. I have purchased more than I would care to admit from them I wear them all the time. Take some time to look at their site and some of their sold out styles. They are always adding new items and many times they are an older item with an update in color etc. I wear the Sophie (which they’re always introducing in new colors) a lot on the weekend as a topper.

Love some of the other Fabbers great suggestions. When I hear toppers it can mean almost anything and because I always seem to chill easily I have a variety. Because I like scarves that is always a go to layer- no matter what other topper I am wearing. Don’t be afraid of them- look at some wiw posts- fabbers rock this accessory (you know who you are) I also love a good vest- depending on style and fabric I can dress it up or down, stand alone or as a layer. I love knits/ sweaters but found when I was a mom on the go, putting on or taking off over the head, eh...... kids move fast so I stayed with cardigans- expect pulls, But I liked the polished look of a casual blazer. It looked effortless and stylish compared to when I wore a Jean jacket- I have given all but 1 jeans jacket away because it’s not my best look. Utility jackets are great for storing quick provisions (baggie of Cheerios, extra Kleenex) all those little things a MOTG needs at her fingertips.
Life is all about choices and options- yay. Try one, try all. I am confident You will find what suits your style and lifestyle best.

You need mobility with those little ones! I would go with knit toppers. Tee under knit jackets (like Gigi's suggestion of a moto), structured cardigans, or swackets. If you find one you like get it in 2 colors (one print if you can) and you can work around that. As it warms up maybe a puffer vest?

For a topper, how about a knit moto? This would give your outfit a bit of edge but be less inexpensive than a leather version and also easy to wash.

When my son was younger I lived in a boiled wool blazer. Seemed to repel both rain and dirt, was cool on warmer days and warm on cooler days. Loved it.
When we went to Ireland a number of years ago I tossed my cashmere and wool sweater coat out and threw the boiled wool jacket in at the last minute. Was I glad I did as I wore it every day for at least part of the day.
Best investment I ever made.

I have an LL Bean Utility Jacket that I love -- mine is a teal colour, but its a few years old. Its not lined, so good for the late spring where I live.

I also have a couple of really light down jackets/sweaters? They are super light, but warm enough for the early spring -- one is llbean and one is Patagonia. I saw some nice ones at NorthFace yesterday.

Hey thistle, as you know, I'm going through the same thing as you, and an also struggling for a weekend MOTG capsule. I've decided that this spring it's going to be: casual striped midi dresses, Jean jacket or utility jacket, and sneakers. I'm testing it out on vacation and it's been working out pretty well - comfortable, put together, easy, and not constricting at the waist (which I hate.) Just throwing it out there in case it's helpful...

I think a utility jacket and a long cardigan/coatigan or similar. These are both easy to layer under. Or a trendy puffer vest. I agree one in a neutral and one in a bolder colour - wine/burgundy and navy or grey or olive?

I also like a striped tee (long or short sleeve) as I find them very versatile.

And trendy sneakers or flat boots.

Love the idea of a utility style jacket in plum for you! I don't find denim jackets comfortable enough. I like ponte knit, light fleece or heavy cotton (Eddie Bauer used to have ones I liked). But there are so many jacket options - I just can't shop for them anymore because I own way too many for my warm climate.

I think scarves or colorful jewelry and a colorful handbag would also be great additions.

A utility jacket roomy enough to layer a sweater or puffer vest under would be a good place to start. Do you have a fun, casual rain coat? If your kids like to be outdoors, this might another consideration.

Many have mentioned footwear above. Don’t forget to think about handbags. Footwear and handbags can make a big difference in how polished I feel in my running around outfits.

You know I’m all about scarves - how about cotton bandanas? Cotton scarves that throw a little color up by your face, or as a headband...or around the handle of your bag, or around your wrist...

Speaking of wrist, a watch, or a leather bracelet...

I’m also huge fan of sneakers for leisure - Chucks? New Balance? In fun colors? Or black high tops? Absolutely!!

It’s all about the accessory capsules, if you ask me. You can look polished, hip and fun using your standbys with some easy accessory changes - wash, wear, go!

Basically my whole wardrobe is one giant MOTG capsule. I like the idea of canvas and denim jackets, but they are exclusively warm-weather toppers for me. Cotton jackets don't provide much insulation or weather resistance. This time of year, for me, it's all about puffies (like Rachy suggests) and upgraded hoodies. I have an old solid black merino hoodie that I love, and also a black softshell jacket with moto styling that is both functional and kind of cool looking. You could also think about chunky cozy cardigans -- like Aran-style fisherman sweaters and such -- used as toppers. And, heck, blazers with jeans! I'm always having to remind myself to bring the blazers out on the weekends.

For jeans (and really just pants in general), I like something loose enough at the bottom to cuff/roll, that way you can wear them with lots of different shoes and boots.

Speaking of which -- What is your weekend footwear situation? I think shoes are really make or break with MOTG outfits. I think you absolutely need something that is distinct from your workwear shoe style (whether thats pumps, ballet flats, whatever), but is also not a straight-up gear shoe. I'm so not into wearing my running shoes round town (they're too muddy anyway!). So, some sort of classic/iconic sneaker, or casual ankle boots, or a funky loafer/oxford -- kind of depends on your style, but if I were approaching this as a capsule-building exercise, I would probably start with the shoes and work up.

I have lots of scarves, but most are silk, so not low maintenance.

I have several pairs of booties. Good point on that though! I need to think about which ones I'd actually wear on weekends. Normally its althleisure wear and New Balance. I know, try not to picture it!

Love the idea of a utlity jacket! Do you have a scarf you could wear with it?
Some fun earrings?
Do you have some good booties?

A colored denim jacket or utility jacket.

Check out dress barn -- I tried this on over the weekend (dark plum utility jacket). They have lots of inexpensive twill, canvas, and denim jackets that you could wear without having to be careful with.

If I were a mom on the go I would definitely have a utility jacket. It is perfect for a soccer game or going out to lunch. For a second topper how about a non denim, stretch jean style jacket?

I went and looked at your old WIWs. You know, you look fabulous in jewel tones - dark reds, deep greens. I think something kicky in a colour and no lapels. You hate puffers right? Still, I think a slim, sweater weight Uniqlo puffer with a little sheen would be cute on you (!)

Hehe. Puffy Pusher am I

Utility jacket!! Your neutral of choice - terrific topper and sturdy enough to be thrown in the washer.... drawcord waist or even a swing style would’ve super cute.

I find denim jackets restricting - but I have broad shoulders and a broad back.

Also, take a look at Chico’s - I bought a lightweight cropped twill jacket that I’ll wear as soon as the weather warms up.

So, as I go through and think about what I need to dress as I am right now, I need a MOTG capsule for weekends.

I realized the sad state of my sartorial affairs when I tried to dress comfortable casual with a whisper of style this weekend.

I need the capsule to be comfortable enough to wear with two kids, but "nice' enough that I don't mind being out and about in it.

I am thinking two pairs of good but super comfortable jeans, tees (which I probably already have), and two toppers. All need to be easy to care for, as you know, it's for a MOTG!

Not sure what the toppers should be.

Going to go peruse the YLF archives, but if you have any input, would love to hear it!
