It is the buzzaro world of coldness out there! Yesterday morning it was -25 with the wind chill and there's about a foot of snow on the ground that has completely frozen over. Schools had a delayed start but weren't closed.
We have a fenced in dog run that goes out into the backyard from the garage and the pups run out, do their business, and run right back in.

It's been so cold! Not quite as bad as Lisa, but we've been down to almost -40C once the windchill is factored in. To give an idea - my friend spilled her coffee cup on the dashboard of her car the other morning when she was getting in, and the coffee froze on contact. Ridiculous!

Angie - the answer to the doggie question is - very quickly! Out the door, do their business, straight back in again. The media has been really good about reminding people not to leave their fur-babies outdoors for any length of time when it's so cold. A lot of our local fur-babies have warm jackets, and little booties to protect their paws from ice and salt.

In our neighbourhood, we have a kid-and-pet watch situation, where we keep an eye on each other's babies (whether human or canine!) ... my friend's little doggie snuck out the other day through an unlocked door (poor thing probably fed up on being stuck inside) and it only took a minute or two before some of us heard her whimper and got the poor thing back inside and warm, stat!

I do worry about the animals though too. Both wild and domestic . This freezing weather just not fit for man nor beast

Our temps are only supposed to be -28F tonight (it was colder last night), but with wind chill could feel like -45F. The whole state has essentially shut down for two days (today and tomorrow). Universities have closed, all schools have closed, malls are closed, and all non-essential government functions are closed. There is no mail delivery. Streets are like ghost towns.

We broke the record for the lowest high temperature, and came within 1 degree of the all-time low, set almost 70 years ago.

Update: about 5cm snow and -3 (but feels like -13) degC - VERY windy. Reno suspended today since project manager snowed in. 10-15 km north of us the Oak Ridges Morrain deflects storms north, so it is a whole different world out there. I believe Stylefan gets caught up in the worst of it.

Ok. I tried looking that up about dogs. I can’t say anyone has really addressed conditions of 5-minute frostbite! My conclusion is, one really has to setup an indoor potty or sheltered dog run. They do have doggy litter boxes.

Lilypup *is* puppy pad trained, altho I wonder if she remembers now that we have a yard. She bangs the door if she wants to go out (I could never get her to ring the bell).

I have to say, Lilypup always waits for the walk to do her #2, and I’ve never felt like being so cruel as to keep her locked up for days to train her. That’s what it would take.

The bird is a turtle dove waiting for squirrels to leave the feeder. We could not see the mountains. Clear skies and really cold temperatures are predicted for tonight.

LOL! I had been trying to get my contractors to commit to a start date on a rec room reno before the furniture was delivered, but there was a bit of waffling going on during our surprisingly mild winter as they continued outdoor jobs. Temps dipped last week, and we got snow. Thursday they asked if we were good for a Monday start! They've been thumping around downstairs since 7:30 am!

When I checked on progress at noon, the workers cheekily declared they were happy to be assigned to an indoor job!

Not unusual temperatures in Scandinavia, where I live. A few tips:
● Dress in multiple layers. Use warm underwear
● Wear wool, fleece and wind-proof clothing
● Wear warm, lined, roomy boots + wool soles + at least 2 pairs of wool socks (1 thin, 1 thick)
● Take extra care to protect your head and your hands. Wear a warm wool hat and two pairs of gloves/mittens
● Protect your neck by wearing a turtleneck + a silk scarf + a thick scarf. (The silk scarf layers are very comfortable and really provide added warmth! The thick scarf, if long, can also be used to wrap around your head--you might need that in addition to your hat)
● Drink warm beverages regularly
● If wearing sunglasses, be aware that metal parts may soon start to freeze into your skin
● Don't go out in the cold right after having used a moisturizer. Wait at least 30 minutes. If you own a rich cream suitable for cold climates, do use it
● Keep moving/walking. If you have to wait outside (for a bus etc.), at least keep moving your fingers/hands and your toes/feet!

A lot of the US is getting some very cold temperatures coming up, on the heels of a major storm. We are expected to get about a foot of snow in about 8 hours tonight, and after that, the temperatures will drop. On Wednesday, we're expected to have a high temperature of -18F (about -28 C), not including wind chill. It will be brutally, dangerously cold.

I'm actually not complaining, as we haven't had much snow to speak of for several years. The temperatures last year were always closer to being just above freezing, which led to a lot of freezing rain which then cleared up and left us with no snow on the ground. While we did not have a white Christmas, we are making up for it now. We just had about 8" of snow and we ought to get even more tonight. Almost every school - including the big public schools and universities and colleges - is closed tomorrow, and many government buildings are, too. Even the malls in the cities closest to where we live are delaying opening tomorrow due to the snow.

So if you're in line for this storm and blast of cold weather coming up, stay safe and stay warm!
