Really interesting, Jenni, thanks for sharing all the numbers. (It's also nice to know I'm not the only one with items staying in the wardrobe for some years)
I have always intended to start tracking wears, but there are more pressing issues. I think I would quickly see that I don't wear things as much as I think I do. And there are the embarrassing items that I've owned for a year but only just worn last week! So I've stopped shopping for now.

Impressive. I started trying to track wears in May. It is hard for me to always remember to do so. I know there are some items that might never reach 30 wears such as fancier dresses, but I'm ok with that, I need to have a few on hand for those dressy occasions that come up. However, this helps me to stop and think carefully before buying more in certain categories.

I admire you for your discipline to track. And for reducing your purchases this year. You have a fun maximalist footwear collection!

I track what comes in, and what leaves, but not how much I wear pieces. I still make mistakes - I think I have made one this autumn with a new tweed pullover.

It is horrifying that items are discarded so quickly- 7 wears. Yet I can see how that would happen. I am also surprised how little some pieces can actually be worn, I sometimes think I will wear a piece once a week but actually it turns out to be once every three weeks.

I have realised over the last few months that the areas where I will put most of my spending are sunglasses and footwear as these make the biggest difference to how I look and feel. Since these are more pricey areas I will have to compromise on other areas.

I salute your diligence and discipline! And I really like the rust/blue combo in #1.

I also did tracking, of my work wear. How illuminating it is. I also found it helpful as a sort of mood gauge - what helped my confidence on a challenging day, what brought me down even on a calm day. Helped to identify the pieces and combos that really work.

Jenni NZ -- although 2000 women seems like a small sample size, I feel it is close to representative because I know women in real life that probably only wear their clothing on average seven times before donating them.

I hope you do write more on your continuing epiphanies. I personally learn a lot from others experience.

A note to Staysfit. I track everything in my wardrobe, but when I originally started out (many years ago), I only tracked the number and cost of work-related garments. So my spreadsheets were small and very manageable. As time went on, I added other categories. I started tracking cost per wear. It was a very gradual evolution. The biggest time commitment was inserting the garment category, garment, purchase date, cost. Once that was done, it literally takes less than 60 per day to keep up on.

Thought I'd chime back in to give those interested the link about 7 wears.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/fem.....imes-Items
It says they surveyed 2000 women?
So I have been trying to wear everything more, but some like the 6 high-heeled winter dress shoes are just tricky to find the occasions to wear. All 6 bought between 2010-2014, some with sales goggles on. Then by about 2015 I was really realising I had what was for me a shopping problem!
Thanks Staysfit for being so nice about the fact that I've worn so much of my stuff( 69% of the dominant season) fewer than 20 times. I've had some more epiphanies I may post again in the future , to see the root of my issues.
And just for Angie( and maybe Brooklyn, if either of you sees the pic) here are the embroidered boots, Jaycon boot from Styletread ( Django and Juliette). So far... 2 wears, woops! ( bought at start of summer though and not worn all through the summer). Partly helped caused the summer shopping fast! I had stalked them for so many months before that I caved when Styletread had a 20 % off day.

Wow, you did a really thorough analysis.

Reading other people's analysis on YLF prevented me from many unneeded purchases when I realized I just didn't have many occasions to wear X, and if I bought Y I'd wear X even less.

I'm finding that boredom creates a desire for new items, but I have not been finding items I like as much as many that I already own that hit 30 wears years ago. Several of my newer items this past winter were passed over for old favorites.

On the other hand, looking at items with new eyes is giving me new outfits I love and am wearing weekly.
Now to find the missing items that will make a few of the less worn items more useable.

Anne -- The same thing happened to me. I started teleworking two days a week, thereby decreasing the days in the office to three days per week and one of those office days is a casual Friday.

OMG.

The changes this has wrought!! I went into deep, deep shock as I re-assessed and re-evaluated. Like you, I am really making myself buy work-related items that serve as dressy casual so that they can be worn to work, but also worn for other purposes.

This has been challenging. I am so glad I am not alone.

I am using that analysis at the moment Sterling. I have dropped my working days down to 3 a week, and since one of those is casual Fri, I only have 2 days a week to wear my more formal work items. Even though my work wardrobe is small by YLF standards, at this rate I could not repeat for nearly a month. So I'm not buying any more work items for awhile, unless they are flexible enough to do double duty for out of work wear.
I have a weakness for bottoms too - not trousers like you, which I have almost given up on, but skirts. I probably need more tops, if anything, but skirts have an allure for me!

So this is why I find these types of exercises to be so useful to me.

Jenni NZ writes For instance I have 6 pairs of nice high-heeled winter dress shoes. I don't wear them to work as not comfortable enough - so realistically it will take years to get to 30 wears on them!

That probably means that Jenni NZ no longer needs to buy any more high-heeled dress shoes because (1) she knows she already owns six of them, and (2) she doesn't wear them all that often.

As an example, when I began tracking, I discovered to my chagrin that I bought lounge wear every time I found it on sale. I had quite a collection in terms of numbers, yet I discovered that I only needed a maximum of three in rotation. This meant I no longer needed to buy additional lounge pieces.

Early on I still gravitated to the lounge section of every department store I visited ... just to look. But my spreadsheets informed me that I should not buy and I didn't. In time, I stopped visiting those sections all together. I am wearing what I own. Success.

I use this type of evaluation for every category in my system. It has proved useful/successful for shoes, bags, dresses, skirts, and athletic wear. It is only marginally successful for tops and bottoms. It seems I can always rationalize one more bottom.

I enjoyed this post. I read all the tracking posts thoroughly. I am both astounded and impressed that only 31% of your wardrobe when grouping shoes and clothes, meets the 20 or more wears criterion. I'm impressed because I suspect that the statistic you gave us that most people get only 7 wears is accurate. It's a sad number after recently watching multiple videos about sustainability and recycling and wanting to do better with my own wardrobe. I am probably the worst person to speak about this because I have a medium to large 4 season wardrobe and I have very publicly redone my wardrobe here on the forum. However, there is no time like the present to start being more conscientious. I am astounded because I have tried multiple ways to track wears and have never been able to do it with any success. People who have the dedication to keep track of this information while living busy lives are amazing! I wish I could do it, because I bet it would help me gain great information about my fashion choices/habits.

Hi Rachy, no, not in the past 12 months. Those numbers are the wears ever since they were bought. So for the 1985 shirt and 1986 jumper, I have had to guess 50+ wears. The tartan shirt is a little dead but I think it cost about $ 70 in 1985- I remember because my flat mate at the time criticised the high cost! So it must have been good quality. I only wear it now with one particular cowl neck merino where the 2 necklines really suit each other in my mind.
I do wonder if I keep some stuff too long- you can see there are items from 2008,9 and 10 there as well as many starting from 2012. I noticed that the black layering T I have been wearing today is a little floppy around the scoop neck and it may need culling soon. Everything else is in really good nick.

That's funny Lucy! Appreciated! When I started tracking I just guessed how much all the pre-May 2016 stuff had been worn. I may have underestimated a bit but I thought not too much, because like Sterling I can THINK I am wearing something all the time, but once I am actively counting then I realise it's not as much as I thought. The thing is, I think, that I have so many choices and change up my work outfit almost every day, so it takes a while to use all the different choices available to me. I agree with Anne that it necessarily may lead to restriction. For instance I have 6 pairs of nice high-heeled winter dress shoes. I don't wear them to work as not comfortable enough - so realistically it will take years to get to 30 wears on them!

Very interesting! It is horrible to think the average wear is only seven.
I have been tracking wears for new items that I have bought this year, to see how things pan out. What I have found is that if I have a choice of wearing something I bought in December or something I purchased in January, I will go for the January item, so I can track it. Lol, I'm not sure this was the point of the exercise!
But it is definitely making me more mindful of avoiding fast fashion.

Very interesting Jenni. I have not tracked my outfits or what I wear (yet). I do have some idea of what gets worn the most in my wardrobe. It is sad that the average wear for an item is 7 times.
I am very impressed by your shoe collection.

Jenni, what a lot of work you have done!! I hope it is illuminating and helps you going forward.

I'm afraid I can't take in large numbers of figures too well, so can't comment on that precisely.

Like Joy, I also try to get a higher CPW by thinking in terms of weeks. When I get something new I think about how often I'd wear it - once a week for the season? Once a week/fortnight for the year for the whole year for other items? etc.

This has led me to restrict myself quite a bit in what I purchase- eg - usually to one pair of jeans a year, one casual sweater, replace heeled boots every 3-4 years etc.

That's the aim. Mistakes, gifts and hand-me-downs can affect things though, as can changes in climate, work and size.

Hi Joy. I agree with everything you said.

When I reviewed the actual numbers of wear versus what I imagined the numbers would be, I was genuinely surprised. There were items I thought I wore non-stop and yet the actual number of wears was less then 30 (from Jenn's earlier thread). No one was more surprised than me.

Tracking has also helped me evaluate the categories of clothing I wear the most. I was able to fine tune my purchasing habits and buy items that I knew would get worn. My personal goal was to buy better quality and more stylistic within those particular categories.

My system is working is tracking.

This is so interesting. I tried tracking for a winter then gave up when hot weather hit, but was amazed at how much I reached for the same items and had to challenge myself to wear dressier items more. The actual numbers were less than I would have guessed and told me that I have way more clothes than I need. I have started thinking in terms of weeks...if I wear something once or twice a week and there are 6 weeks or so in "season", it helps me predict how much something will get worn and has stopped me from buying more dresses, dress pants or skirts unless they will work for casual days.

Thanks all! Bridgie, the Steve Madden gold stud boots are from DSW when I had a trip to San Francisco in 2013. I was like a kid in a candy store there, but bought only the one pair as I had to fit stuff in my suitcase! And the teal ones perfectly match my teal top. Angie, no close-up on the embroidered boots yet but will do next time I wear them. Have only worn them twice so far, a smidge high for work so will be more for dinners out.
Julie, my husband is the same and reckons cost per wear is a few cents for much of his stuff. But then he doesn't have a shopping problem and I have done. I feel sure from the mountains of discarded clothes at Goodwills etc that the 7 wears must be true for many. Hence my tracking to learn how to buy better in the first place.

I've just started tracking, and its been helpful to think about average wears per category...it helped me realize how many items i need ( eg given my current jeans collection, if they last 4 years at this wear rate, I'll have worn each over 100 times).
Seven wears seems ridiculous. I just told my husband about the 30 wears thing-he looked down at his jeans and ragged tshirt and was like, "maybe 300 wears!"

Great post. I thoroughly enjoy these analyses.

I have to agree with Emily K that an average of 7 wears is a sad commentary on our consumer-driven culture. That could have been me IF I didn't carefully track purchases by category and cost per wear. I understand the value of these analyses for me.

Your analysis is fascinating. I wonder about the bench warmers. Some items just don't get worn all that often because they are special occasion or needed for some unique purpose (e.g., camping only once every couple of years). Yet they are still needed. Do any of your bench warmers fall into that category? I have made peace with those types of bench warmers. Other types such as those I just got tired of are another story.

I admire your shoe collection. They look both stylish and comfortable.

I am flabbergasted to think that the average number of wears could be 7! Wow--that would really affect my CPW calculations--and not in a good way! And it gives me a new perspective about how consumer oriented others may be. But anyway, I digress. I admire your wardrobe tracking exercise and the insights it has begotten. If you consider your benchwarmers, do any commonalities arise? Maybe you will have an epiphany about why those items are not chosen more frequently. :-)

Hi all! More musings on what I've discovered in the past year. Got the idea of trying to go for 20 wears from the forum about a year ago. One month ago, thanks to Jenn, I upped my planned wears to #30.
So after a year, here are results for my dominant climate, autumn/winter/spring. I should have more clothes for these than summer as I just add extra warmth in mid-winter which is not that cold here, no snow in my city. I have 87 clothing items for this, 28 pairs of shoes, total 115. So far, the best wears are on:
my layering Ts orange/rust 2012 22 wears, teal 2012 20 wears, bright pink 2013 20 wears, black 2014 21 wears, thin black merino 2014 23 wears, black/shadow striped 2015 22 wears.
Non-layering tops: oldest shirt 1985 tartan 50+ wears, black skivvy 2008 25 wears, red/brown/black print top 2009 22 wears, green/black star top 2014 22 wears, pink/blue camo top 2016, lime floral top 2016 21 wears.
Tunics: cobalt tunic 2010 24 wears, beige graphic tunic 2010 22 wears, sheer flowers tunic 2013 20 wears, olive tunic 2014 22 wears, olive/grey striped long jumper 2014 22 wears.
Pants: black and leatherette ponte pants 2014 25 wears, Sabatini black with leather patches ponte pants 2016 21 wears, olive knit pants 2016 22 wears, charcoal knit pants 2016 20 wears, Macjay's dark straight jeans 2016 25 wears.
Jackets and coats: oldest jumper 1986 Mondi bright colours 50 + wears, faux fur vest 2012 27 wears, rust orange cardi 2012 26 wears, wide striped Sabatini jumper 2015 20 wears, black cropped jacket 2016 42 wears, black and white swing coat 2012 20 wears.
Shoes and boots: Skechers slip-ons 2009 34 wears, tall black boots 2011 21 wears, teal shoes 2012 21 wears, Steve Madden gold stud chunky ankle boots 2013 25 wears, flat black 3-strap ankle boots 2014 28 wears, Supersoft animal print slip-ons 2015 22 wears, cobalt patent ankle boots 2015 24 wears, pink sneakers 2016 27 wears.
So the total of at least 20 wears is clothes 28/87, 32%, shoes 8/28, 28%. Overall 36/115 31%.
I also checked items ( "benchwarmers" ) that were not worn AT ALL in 2015,16 or 17 so far: there are 12 of these or 10 %. And there are 5 items only worn once, 4 %. Pics show frequently worn items: 1. rust/orange layering T with cobalt tunic, 2. thin black layering T with olive tunic and flat black 3-strap ankle boots, 3. thin black merino layering T with sheer flowers tunic, faux fur vest and Sabatini black leather patch ponte pants, 4. bright pink layering T and black leatherette/ponte pants, 5. cobalt patent boots, 6. lime floral top, 7. grey/olive long striped layering jumper, 8 and 9 and 10. pink/blue camo top, dark straight Macjay's jeans, black cropped jacket, pink sneakers.
11. black with gold studs Steve Madden chunky ankle boots, 12. teal shoes, 13. Supersoft animal print slip-ons, 14. black lace slip-on Skechers.
What I'm most proud of is how some of the 2015 and 2016 buys have so quickly become workhorses, especially the black cropped jacket. And what I'm not sure of is the 14% worn once or not at all for the past 2.5 years that I still seem to want to keep.
I've read that the average wears for women these days is 7. So I'm beating that for these. Of course there is another 55% of my dominant season wardrobe which DOES get worn but not as much. I haven't done my summer wardrobe at all here, I doubt the percentages are any better as I have even more choice there!
I am interested in anyone's ideas on my numbers or issues that you spot. Whether I can bring myself to change is another matter! But I feel quite pleased with trying to wear my clothes and am also still buying less overall. 10 items so far in 2017
