Thanks Angie - I didn’t think about sunglasses but they are a statement. I wear my pairs very often through necessity and I love them!

TG- no need to wear statements!. You do have some bright tops but I agree that your style is more mix and match of classic pieces. And I love it on you!!

Nuancedream- lovely pieces. I always am drawn to your choice of pattern.

Nemosmom- lovely pieces. I think you tend to be like me with lots of essentials with one or two statements in each look. Your aviator jacket and jewelry are stunning.

Style fan - shame about those pants. bijou - we could play a game!

Sal, you are so insightful! You hit it spot-on: when we get it right, it is SO right! I definitely think of your gold bomber and teddy coat as signature for you - they look amazing on you and I definitely associate them with you as "your" pieces. Goodness knows I have lots of louder pieces that collect dust in my closet... I wonder what makes one statement become a workhorse over another??? hmmm...

My statement workhorses aren't very statement-y, but they do offer just enough interest to my typical jeans+tee uniform. My Big Sur jade bracelet is worn almost daily, even at home. The silver ring was made by a former teacher, and dear friend, of mine.

You rock these statements Sal, especially I love the metallic bomber which is SO flattering and harmonizes with you so perfectly that it has the effect of both statement and total ease - which is a Jedi-level of style execution in my book.

I tend to think my statement is making no statement at all lol!

This is such an inspiring thread! I love seeing everyone's examples, and how different they are. And I can also see how they make you feel...well...you!

For me, it's about adding a pop of rich color or texture. The statements that become workhorses can play with a large part of my wardrobe, and I don't feel like I'm repeating even if I wear them frequently.

Some of my favorites below.

Stylefan - your statement jewelry is gorgeous especially the amethyst ring!! And of course scarves are perfect too.

Jenn- great example. That coat is the perfect statement workhorse for you (as it would be for me if you tire of it!!)

Bijou - you have some wonderful statements and some of these get great use (pink faux fur, star boots, and those bags......I agree that statement dresses are a lot of fun....and my top pick as well.

Jenni - I think many of your shoes would fall into this category....and I do think 2020 has been a strange year with clothing needs... I think statement sandals and boots are a key component of your style and one you should continue with!!

Rachy- I know the whole what is an essential, what is a statement can be blurry for some pieces and some people like all their pieces to have a bit of interest/quirk about them.

I think my wardrobe is very heavy in statements and essentials with very few completer type pieces (definitely less than 20% in total, probably more like 10%). Most of my outfits are essentials with one statement piece......

This thread has made me realise that I do want a pair of statement shoes - I have been focussed on topping up my essential shoes over the last two years which I have done a really good job of - so I now have a good base of options. Time for some patterned or colourful or interesting flat shoes next I think!!

What beautiful statement pieces everyone has! I tend to wear essentials and simple styles. Most of my statements come from jewellery and accessories. I usually wear one piece of statement jewellery with my outfit. Not all of my pieces are in finds but here are the ones that are:

I am with Rachylou and Shevia. Mine are not photographed as Finds, and because I am still working on increasing wears of less-worn things my favourite statements that have been worn a lot are neglected currently.
No doubt the 2015 cobalt boots ( 100 wears) and the 2012 “kiwi” faux fur vest (66 wears) would count?

This is an interesting question for me. I think... I have signature essentials. If I don’t wear them, people comment, but they’re not that exciting. But it’s a bit relative, because everything I have is a bit showy, even the minimalist things. I don’t wear my statement pieces that often, the things that make a big entrance.

Oh and Cindy - you have some great statement pieces that work brilliantly for you. I can sense your love for them in your post.

I love Aviators too....and the ring is very special.

I think thrifting statements that are workhorses is such a special thing - it often feels very individual and shows how one person's trash is another person's treasure.

I must get back to doing a bit more thrifting. I did a bit last year but have had no success this year.

Joy - you have thrifted some excellent statement pieces- embroidery is a real feature!!

Suntiger - yes I forget that gear can be a statement too - and some of mine possibly fits in that criteria too. I do admire your laptop bag (mine is the most boring black one you can imagine).......

Totally a tangent but I realize I have a project for our next lockdown (sad to say it seems to be coming soon). I need to get my pieces photographed! I enjoyed looking at everyone's statements but cannot reciprocate.
I have a few bags and shoes that might qualify as statement that I have easily wore more than 30 times. Also some bermuda length short. (I have workhorse jeans, but not any statements off the top of my head.) Vintage coats and jackets too.
Anyway, thank you for the fun topic and new project Sal!

Some of my statement workhorses are below and only one ( the second, a black floral silk jacket/ blouse, was bought new. All the rest are thrifted or consignment and unique pieces that I love. Usually prints do not stay in my closet very long, but I will be sad when these and a few similar pieces need to be retired. All have been in my closet for years and are often the first pick for a trip.

I have lots of statementy things, that all get (or used to BC-19) a lot of wear. Dresses, skirts, blouses, jewelry...But the real workhorses are my purple coat and boots, and the peacock bag used to be my daily computer bag (when I didn't carry 100 lb of c%$^). Guess my lilac trainers are right now too, since they're used daily for cycling. And my shiny hiking sandals. And my cycling jersey. And of course my owl

yes yes and yes. In cooler weather, my Opening Ceremony wedge booties are a workhorse and they're quite a statement with 6" of heel, plus they lace up so they feel kind of tough. My Celine bag is a statement due to its simplicity and the facet that it is built like a Sherman tank and will potentially survive thermonuclear disaster. Both were thrifted/consignment scores.

The blue ring is older than my sobriety. It was bought at a "new age" type store in Shreveport Louisiana. It gets worn a lot when I'm not working, because it's big and chunky and pretty. The red and cream necklace is a heavy-hitter, too; bought by my ex, it was made by a Chickasaw artisan. I love it, and it has such a great WEIGHT to it.

My Isabel Benenato sweaters are dear old friends (finds); they get worn on repeat, especially the brown one. Bought new at a discount from Yoox, the life expectancy of these sweaters probably expired years ago and yet here they are still working overtime in my wardrobe. Same for the doo.ri tank top. I wore the first one to death, and got lucky enough to find the exact replacement IN MY SIZE at yoox. It's starting to show it's age, so it's been relegated to casual/lounge wear, but I still love it.

My Revo aviators are one item I don't leave home without. Aviators are bada$$, and the lenses on a Revo make them great for summer or winter or even at night on a Harley. I currently own 3 pairs, with 2 of them needing to be combined into one pair because of abuse.

The black belt is positively ancient in terms of fashion. It was acquired at the Lucchese store in San Antonio in the 90s; the belt and 3 piece buckle set had to be purchased separately and assembled together. I outgrew the belt, so I disassembled and put the buckle set on an Amish made belt that was very similar to the original. That buckle is wicked cool and timeless, and I will never tire of it.

Thank you for this trip down memory lane, it has made my workday much more pleasant!

Brooklyn - yes I always think of your signature style as having a statement skirt along with maybe footwear or bag or jewelry.....perhaps with a more esssential/simpler top. It works so well for you.

Lisa - absolutely you have enviable topper and footwear (and bag) collection. I think your tops and pants are usually simpler/essential in style. And again this works brilliantly for you.

Carla - yes your toppers here are definitely zingy and a key part of your look. The blue puffer is very cheerful in the coldest part of the year and that bomber has been a real statement workhorse.

Sarah - we share the same patterned summer wardrobe and maybe simpler quieter mix and match winter wardrobe. The batwing top sounds super.

Staysfit - yes I agree that a statement in a neutral can be such a winner - you also have some lovely print dresses that I have admired.

Suzieq - kimono are such a gorgeous topper in warm weather (fingers crossed for you). I have one and I do love it although don't wear it enough....

I have a collection of flowy kimonos that I love. This year I stocked up on wide-legged pants & tops to go with them. All the tops I already had are meant to be worn over skinny jeans, & they don’t work with wide-legged pants. We’ll soon be selling our house & moving to Puerto Aventuras, Mexico (God willing). We bought a beachfront condo there. I needed more summery clothes for that climate. I won’t need winter clothes down there, but maybe a couple pairs of outfits to wear if we decide to go see family in Florida during the cold months. Our hope is that they’ll want to come see us & have a wonderful vacation while they’re at it.

In summer, my print sundresses definitely qualify. I just throw them on day after day!

In cool seasons, I'd generally say that my statements aren't worn often enough to really be workhorses, and my workhorses aren't statements. My black patent leather stompy boots are the exception that proves the rule.

Oh, and a green batwing drape-neck pullover with gold flecks that I wore for basically every festive occasion last fall/winter.

Absolutely! The statement often provides the zing in my outfit - usually derived from colour, texture, pattern, and shine.

Zara embroidered satin bomber (2015 or 2016))
Joseph Ribkoff Silver foil t-shirt (2016)
Madewell ‘Egyptian Gold’ corduroy crops (2019)
Red Converse sneakers (2018)
Red Pankhurst beret (2018)
Cobalt puffer (2019)

I’m babying the Zara topper, but it’s been worn a kagillion times (before I started counting wears) and the silver foil top too. The Madewell crops were bought in October 2019 and accumulated 15 wears since January 2020 when I started counting wears. The red shoes and beret speak for themselves. The maxi puffer is a newer piece and restricted to the coldest winter months December - February. Not only is it my ‘go to’ coat for cold days, it packs a punch on a dreary day! Bold colours and sporty cuts in unusual fabrics are signature to my style.

I sure do! They are almost all jackets/blazers of some kind : leather and faux moto jackets, camo-print jackets/pants, super-tailored blazers (although I'm wearing these a lot less this year) and statement footwear (hi-tech or athletic shoes and leather booties). I don't have finds for most of my pieces, but some are shown below.

My wardrobe has been statement heavy. I have a lot of unique cashmere sweaters, jackets, tops and dresses. The statements that become workhorses tend to be neutral in color, for example, my navy Loewe Puzzle Bag, or my Navy London Fog Chelsea trench. Another class of workhorse statement items is jewelry, like earrings or my bangles. However, my biggest workhorse statement items are my eyeglasses! (As many know, I have a collection....)

My statement pieces tend to be skirts (as opposed to dresses), jackets and bags. Some of my boots are statement items I think. Like you I rarely wear statement jeans, pants or shorts. And increasingly rarely wear statement tops. I don’t really count my jewellery as statement, but I think some of it is.

I really can’t predict whether a statement item will become a workhorse. For every statement item I have that is a workhorse there is another that isn’t. Which doesn’t mean I don’t like it or wear it, it just means I don’t like it quite as much or find it as wearable for some reason.

These are my statement items from 2019 or earlier that I think of as workhorses. I don’t count wears but I’ve worn them a lot. Looking at them, I think ombré, large scale and dark floral, burgundy and possibly teal, asymmetric midi skirts and military accents are signature for me, so they are good bets for statement items that will become workhorses. Also highly textured items that don’t have strong pattern are a good bet - my Carven skirt and Alice and Olivia skirt are good examples. They function as a neutral in an outfit - easy to mix and match. But the texture elevates them above an essential.

These are lovely pieces. I really like that jumpsuit, the coat is gorgeous and I like the stripes.

Interesting how the burgundy was a spontaneous choice but became a workhorse!
