FASHINTERN- I am not that good at knitting and I don't think they breed sheep or fashion acrylic for steel like properties...hahaha. Wish they did. It is just one of those things that I have just come to accept. I make up for it in my scarf collection- YAY!

Fashintern, to me, BRIGHT/NON-NEUTRAL socks are statement socks. And in my opinion, the "statement" effect is not weakened by matching them to an item near my face. This is not traditional matching. The traditional way of styling would be to match socks with either trousers or shoes.

DK's socks are in a NEUTRAL pattern (or at least look so on my screen).

ETA: oh no—no black with lighter dots. But there is grey (like the dark grey in these socks) with white stripes. An improvement?

FashInern, I think the socks in today's outfit are too high contrast. An inverse of the pattern - black with grey dots - would look more cohesive to my eye.

For me, the lemon and pineapple socks will be loungewear. The purple and yellow were fun this weekend. What do you think of the outfit I put together this morning, the second photo above? Am I close?

Astrid, I’m going to try those, and look at what else I fell for. Irritatingly, they don’t have soft merino for men. I’m trying Berlin and Lhasa for my son. He loves soft, so fingers crossed/thumbs pressed! Also contemplating a pair of slippers for his birthday in early October.

So I added my statement sock debut to the original post. I was looking and looking for lace-up shoes I could wear socks with (for warmth) and then realized that I can wear thin socks with my loafers. It was 60 (16) out this morning & I was hot, so I think they did their job.

The backpack is not one anybody here advised me to get, but it took off the pressure of needing to get just the right one immediately and is fine for running around town. I probably didn’t impress the school secretary this morning or the server yesterday, but I think I look like a competent adult, which is enough (Jgue—just grown up enough). I will need something more professional, and want it to work for this kind of stuff, but I want to take my time finding it. Between the backpack, the shoes, socks, and my shirt, I count 4 patterns. A little overboard?

Katerina, now that is statement socks wearing I can get into. They are there, and visible, but don’t take over the outfit screaming “look at me”.

Astrid, thanks for the link. I know someone who’s recently arrived in Germany & might find it useful ;)

Jessikams, show us!

Janet, aren’t they all good looking at that age? But none of them know it, and we didn’t either. The doughnut sock story is just like this. I thought about getting nylon-type socks like that for Florida when I was playing winter, but doubt I’d use them now. But cool.

Joha, Ziggy Stardust Are you a Bowie fan?

KM, very true that the statement socks are by no means the only tricky thing in that outfit. For me, hats like that feel costume-ish.

Bijou, do you wear your fun socks where they can be seen? Can we see a picture?

Cat, hmm, how much can they match the outfit in a traditional way before the “statement” effect is gone? The DK pic says they can blend in more than I thought.

Rachylou, stay warm there in Cali!

Suntiger, socks to sleep can make so much difference!

Style Fan, those are great! Very worthy of sticking out of your boots.

Efbgen, can you make socks that are tougher than their cute ones? Why can’t the cute ones be tough too?

I wear cotton socks in spring and cool summer, and thin wool socks in fall and winter. Mine are either solid coloured neutrals or non-neutrals or have patterns like stripes, polkadots and hearts--not very crazy.

When wearing non-neutral or patterned socks, I always match them to something else in my outfit (not necessarily my trousers or shoes, but more often to an item near my face, i.e. my top, topper, scarf or reading glasses), so that it doesn't look like the socks were a random choice or the only clean pair I could find. Even in a fun and casual outfit, I like some harmony and cohesiveness.

Katerina, that's such a cool picture of Diane Keaton from top to bottom. Such style and confidence! And a surprisingly classy way to wear fun statement socks. Actually I'm admiring how in every respect she manages to put together items that I find difficult to style, especially the peplum jacket and chunky shoes. I love them but hesitate to wear them, and she wears it all so harmoniously.

Your son is so handsome. Sometimes boys can surprise you with what they embrace. My stepsons are quite a bit older than yours, but I got one of them a pair of donut socks as a bit of a gag gift, and he loves them.

I don’t wear visible socks for a good portion of the year, and when it is time for sock weather here, mine are usually hidden by boots, so my fun socks are mostly hidden. I’m not sure I’ll really participate in the visible statement sock trend, as it might skew a bit too quirky/whimsical for my style, but I do enjoy the socks themselves. I do have a few pairs of pug-themed socks which are fun but mainly not seen unless I wear them around the house without shoes. :-)

I have these in Finds, though, which I will wear with oxfords and loafers when cooler weather allows.

Over the year I wear socks more often than not, so they have to be just right. The last three or four years I mostly bought the Falke Softmerino socks (https://www.falke.com/de_de/so.....u-968-6688) which I really love. They are soft and cozy and thin enough that they work with the same shoes I wear hose with. I also have thicker wool socks in winter to wear in my boots. And cashmere socks for sleeping because my feet are always cold. But all these socks aren’t really statement socks, I prefer my socks understated. I have a friend who wears the most crazy patterns and colors all the time though, with perfectly normal outfits. It’s fun, if it suits your personality.

I don’t usually wear socks, I wear sheer or opaque knee highs in all seasons (except hot summer), also when I wear boots. I only own a few pairs of cotton socks to wear at home if it gets chilly (usually it does not) and to wear with gear. I like SOME statement socks in some outfits on others, but I would feel a bit outside my comfort zone if I would wear visible socks.
However, when I think about wearing socks - I always remember this picture of Diane Keaton - I really like the striped socks with the heavier lace-ups and trousers. Sometimes, I would like to try that look.

So I was curious about colorful socks as thin as hosiery. The answer is yes, from several makers. I was surprised to see that Wolford is putting a toe into this game (sorry not sorry for the pun).

Pandas and burgers and cats. Oh my!

I don’t think Dorothy’s socks qualify as statement-makers, compared to you guys. So many crazy socks—gotta admit I’m surprised. Do you plan on making a statement with them, or to keep them as your inner monologue, safely tucked away from the world? My black & white pack must be a quiet comment, just loud enough for someone to hear if they want to.

Gigi, like the find, an Angie pick from last year? I wonder if they’ll start making them in colors.

Cindy, should I title that pic “diffident teen”, “smoldering” or “Mom, are you ready yet?” I suppose Pippi isn’t part of your new professional image.

Joha, you aren’t kidding around when you say you like them! Might some of them show up in your WiWs? I think we can forgive the old men in Birks+socks, but I am glad the idea of that as fashionable has passed.

KM, how odd! I associate Berlin with very tight vertically striped pants on young men and with horizontally striped stockings, with mini skirts, on young women. I wonder what was going on.

Joy and Cardiff Girl, pragmatic and fun at once

Rachylou, oompapa to that.

I think socks are fun! But I don't know how many shoes I have that will work with statement socks. My closet is mostly heels and flats, and a few pairs of high-shaft booties. I think I have only one pair of shoes that works with socks, and it's a pair of shoes that I dislike!

When I wear socks with heels or flats, I wear fishnet socks because they are not thick enough to stretch out the shoes.

Your kid is gorgeous and I love that he's wearing flamingo socks

I have a bunch of pippy longstocking socks with stripes, but I never wear them visibly.

So - German here - and I must admit that yes - socks with sandals, preferably on elder men's feet and paired with shorts, definitely happening here. But luckily the responsible part of the population is shrinking. I think the unwavering educational efforts of magazines, TV and stuff are kind of successful 0:-)

But back to the topic. I LOVE colourful and quirky socks ( see exhibit A, my sock drawer for fun socks). And for eight months I wear them daily. When I need to be serious for work I also have plain black ones, but usually I reach for one of the happy ones. I'm kind of an emotional dresser so I choose them according to my mood in the morning. And even if nobody can see them - knowing that they are there makes me happy. I have rainbows, yellow submarines, waves and dots and stripes and cherries. And I even buy spares for my favorites. Having so many of them also helps with laundry bottlenecks. And I haven't got bad stares for them although most people here in my smaller and not so fancy hometown wear rather plain ones.

Have fun choosing socks for the coming season and I'm curious to see what others are wearing....
