a side note: I notice that nowadays every party/event has pics posted to social media, so my red plaid pants are getting recognized a lot this season. “Oh, great pants! Those are the same ones you wore to that choral concert, right?” It used to be that I could wear the same crazy pants to events with different social groups (Xmas party with colleagues; dinner with family; concert with friends)

Hmm, for me it's a real mix. I have statement pants: wide-legged, plaid, polka-dot. I have statement shoes: red leather ankle boots, glitter-covered mary-janes, silver mary-janes. My burgundy lace-up boots always get people's attention, though I don't consider them to be "statement" boots in the traditional sense. Some of my accessories -- hats and scarves -- can make a statement. My tops tend not to be particularly statement-y, except for the occasional graphic tee (I've found that a cute critter on a tee is guaranteed to get comments!). I have a couple of statement toppers, but find them a bit harder to wear.

I do not really look to jewelry or eyewear to make a statement. I only wear sunnies, no prescription, so can't rely on them as an outfit component. And I'm picky about jewelry, preferring sentimental pieces with a story; I have very few pieces that I wear for looks alone, and the ones I wear most often tend to be pretty quiet.

My statements are most likely jackets or coats, footwear, bags, and accessories like jewelry and scarves. Tops and vests as well. I’m far less likely to choose statement pants or jeans, but do enjoy some statement skirts in summer with plain tops. My dresses tend to be statements (usually prints).

I have a lot of statement pieces! They are the most fun to shop for and wear.

ETA: I realized that I definitely prefer my (prescription) sunglasses to make more of a statement than my eyeglasses. When my eyes are visible in regular glasses, I don’t like the frames to be too crazy bold. But i don’t mind bold frames on my sunglasses. Interesting!

Interesting mix of answers from people who vary their statements to those who prefer accessories or jackets.

Thanks for the contributions.

This is a great topic. I love statement outerwear, bottoms, footwear, and bags. I actually bought statement satin bottoms today for spring. They were $10 at UO and I couldn't pass them up. I love them paired with the Docs.

Most of my statement pieces are orphaned skirts; which is funny because I live in jeans <shrug>.
I have a couple of fun toppers but I've discovered after taking a week's worth of WIW last week (which I did not post), I see my look has gone "overly Amish" (thanks, April!) I need to add some fun!

I think my shreddy sweaters are statement pieces, too.
I do statement jewelry because it's fun and jewelry is easier to fit than clothes

For a long time I just did bright colorful tops, everything else neutral. But I’m playing with all of it these days. Statement bottoms or shoes won’t be seen at a dinner party or restaurant, because of sitting down, but they work well for a standing-around situation (Gallery opening etc). And I find a statement bag is FAB.

My statement (such as it is lol!) tends to be either a pop of color, or sometimes a piece of jewellery (although I think my statement jewellery is more delicate than what is usually considered statement jewellery). My statements are often made quietly lol

I have statement pieces in every wardrobe item. Even when the silhouettes are simple and classic - like many of my tops - the bright colour makes them very bold and a statement. Same with my simple cashmere scarves, my bags and some outerwear. I also tend to choose items in light neutrals like white and cream, which are less worn by most than black/grey and for that reason they make a statement. Whites are also brighter than blacks and greys.

That said, I wear lots of simple essentials too.

I wear statement eyewear daily - because you know - I have to see. ( I don't do contacts). That makes my style bolder before I've added the rest of the statement pieces.

Sal, I LOVE your bold dresses and eyewear, and look forward to seeing your style evolve to wearing bold items on the bottom.

I have statement pieces across all categories except for trousers - though I have two jumpsuits and a number of playsuits - so they are my statement trousers in a way.

My dresses, boots and bags have the highest number of statement pieces. I don't wear a lot of costume jewellery and tend to wear the same watch, rings and cuff everyday - so that is where I don't mix things up too much. Even earrings (which I change daily), I have only a few pairs that I wear on regular rotation.

I like statement pieces to be removable parts of an outfit: coats and handbags, for example.

But I also like statement shoes, because many of my clothes are relentlessly plain, so a blingy shoe or a statement boot keeps things from going overly Amish.

Jenn- that makes sense. I do think of you wearing gorgeous jackets, kimonos and scarves.

Suz - I do agree in summer pattern is so helpful to make an outfit interesting when you can't layer or add scarves...

Joy - interesting - maybe in winter you need warm tops and they are often plain? Nice to have variety.

Jenni - I can see that with you. I was off skirts but have been enjoying them this summer (I only have one new one and have been wearing and loving two older ones).

I had issues a few years back when I moved from fuller statement skirts (with fitted tees) to statement tops with skinny bottoms. The statement tops and skirts did not work together, and the fitted tops and skinny bottoms did not work on me either (low rise, hourglass, short waist - say no more!!) I am a bit more aware now.

1,2,4,5 and 7. I am mostly off skirts, I do have a statement midi skirt I have kept and not worn for around 10 years, and I think I can fit it so may break it out again next winter. I had another lovely green paisley one I edited out a few years back. I mostly do tops with plain bottoms, but the occasional jacket like my floral bomber is a statement. Dresses like the red and the recent "festive" one are statements, as are shoes and sometimes earrings.

Hmm. I’m wondering now if I’m lying to myself. I have a lot of plain looking clothing...

Like Suz, all of the above. I am surprised to find that most statement pieces in my festive capsule are bottoms. For summer, they are tops. Transitional weather, mostly toppers. There is definitely a smattering of statement accessories, probably heaviest for mid winter.

All of the above. And some depends on context, of course. The top that is a statement on its own with jeans and simple sandals is not a such a statement when it is largely covered by a topper.

Examples below.

If I had to generalize I would say that when my outfit as a whole is more neutral or classic, my accessories/ footwear are likely to make a statement -- and/or my jacket/topper. When I'm unable to layer (in warmer temperatures) my core pieces (top and bottom) are more likely to make the statement.
