I think Etsy is a great idea! I'm with Sarah, I think it's great to support artists for jewelry like this. The only one I like from the set above is #9, but jewelry is so personal that I think you have to decide for yourself. I think you'll know it when you see the right one.

Oh, a big THANK YOU for all your comments and thoughts!

jjsloane, I live in Sweden so I don't have any of the stores you mentioned, but of course there are others I could have a look at! :)

Robin and Sarah, thank you for recommending etsy! I think I've bought some art from there a while ago, but I had completely forgotten about it now! Will definitely look it up before making any decisions. And on that note, #9 would be a good choice since it's handmade... I'm thinking of putting it on my wish list for Christmas and hope they still have it then..!

I'll keep looking and probably come back with more options!

Although #3 & #4 might require more brio than you can muster quite yet, I wouldn't want you to wimp out and pick #5, either. My pick, hands down, is #6, because it will elongate your neck, show beautifully against that black dress, fill space in a "statement" way, yet remain delicate and airy enough to avoid overpowering your gentle features. It fills in the neckline of an open shirt in a very interesting way, too. Love it. I think you'd get lots of wear out of it--I could see it as a signature piece.

I wear statement necklaces quite often. At times I even use them to hide cleavage!

I like 3 and 6 for your dress. I also like 7 & 8 but I see them more as pieces to dress up a work/professional look.

The necklace you pick should be something that you love. I like 6, 7 & 9 best,6 & 9 because they look easiest to wear and still be a statement, and 7 because igloo,s like it would be beautiful with your dress.

Since you don't accessorize much, I think you might want to pick versatile pieces that can be worn with just about any look. While 6 is definitely a statement-necklace and quite a gorgeous one, I also like 5 and 10 very much. I do have a necklace very similar to #5 myself - it's easy to wear, even eitj dressy pieces. These are necklaces you will get more use out of, while #6 will mostly be used for dressier occasions, in my opinion.

I'm going to get on my "high horse" now - hopefully not too much. :) I'm a metal smith/jewelry designer and have an Etsy shop (I don't have any statement necklaces listed so I'm not here to plug my shop). Jewelry is art and you should buy it like art - buy what you like, what feels good to you, what makes your heart sing. It should last forever (if you take care of it or don't loose it). I like the first necklace "girl on a swing" so you have good instincts. One of my pet peeves is fake plastic beads. They just look cheap to me. There are so many wonderful materials out there that designers use that look amazing - why try to make something look like what it isn't.

Look around on Etsy. There are designers like me that put a lot of time and effort into their creations (with very little profit margin).

That dress does scream for a beautiful unique necklace that will showcase you and your personality. Happy hunting!

I also like 6 and 9 the best. I think the colour of no 3 would really pop with the dress so that would work also. I think no 5 might be not enough contrast. But of course it is a very personal thing. I personally like long pendant type necklaces at the moment - so that's what I would go for.

I like 6 and 9 best. A statement necklace is just that, a statement. It instantly draws the eye and is the star of an outfit. As such, I recommend choosing a piece you live and makes your heart sing.

# 7 & 8 remind me of Pono by Joan Goodman. I have a necklace from her website my husband bought me for xmas. The necklace is nice & lightweight resin, lays beautifully, but the color actually is peeling off. It wasn't cheap & I've cared for it meticulously, which makes it pretty disappointing.

I will say that your dress in #2 screams for a statement piece. I would suggest #3,4,6. I don't think #5 is enough of a statement.

Since you generally don't buy statement jewelry, I'm wondering if a lariat necklace that you could style different ways depending on the occasion and on the outfit might meet your needs.

Here's an example of what I mean. I chose one in blues, since you said you're drawn to that colour. Buying handmade items from Etsy also takes away the worry about working conditions, since most sellers make items themselves.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1.....ant&a... bead lariat necklace&ref=sr_gallery_8

You can style the lariat diferently by wrapping it different ways, or by using a necklace shortener.

Your reply

Statement jewelry is quite outside my realm of expertise so I won't comment on your selections. I do want to add that another approach is to wear a really long, simple, necklace. I know that forum member abc wears a long necklace with solid tops and it looks fab!

I do enjoy having a couple of bold necklaces for exactly what you have mentioned. It is very personal though, and I do find that my tastes evolve with costume jewelry, so what I liked five years ago I mostly don't like so much now.

I prefer a higher style that sits above my bust or quite a long one. When I wear a statement necklace I tend not to wear anything else except my rings.

My favourites here are 3,6 and 9. I could see them working both with dresses such as you have shown, or even a simple tee and jeans, or with a jacket too.

I do think actual stores are better with costume jewelry than online, if that is possible.

I am a bit of a magpie (love my bling) so I have rather a collection of statement necklaces. I find there are decent lower priced ones, but if you're only going to have 1 you might want a nicer one. My favorites are from J Crew. I get them when they are way marked down. They hold up nicely and have good presence. I personally like #3 the best, but it is a big step from none to that. Do you have B&M shops you can try some on and snap photos of yourself? Banana republic, Ann Taylor, Lord & Taylor and Francesca's are my local mall stores that have good selections. I would wear 3 with dressy and casual (your dress or a simple tee or sweater). That's the fun of them to mix it up! Good luck, can't wait to see what you decide on.

Short version: don't buy a lot of accessories but want a statement necklace. Have found some that I like but would love to get some help from you of which to choose!

If you want a longer description, here it comes! :)

I don't do a lot of accessories. I have a few simple necklaces and a couple of bracelets, that's basically it. But I've been thinking for a while that it'd be nice with a statement necklace, I've realised that they are handy sometimes! For example, I have just ordered a casual dress for fall/winter (#2), that I thought I'd style with either a scarf, or a statement necklace. I also have another black, dressier V-neck dress that I think could work with a statement necklace.

But, as I don't buy these kinds of accessories, I'd love to get some help from you!

To start, I don't like too much bling, or too much cuteness. I like things that are a bit original, and don't want to spend too much money. Most of the necklaces that I have, I have found in markets or similar (one of my favourites is the "girl on the swing", in #1).

I had a look on eBay, and I found a few that I was drawn to (yes, I like blue/green shades!) But I don't know what I'd actually think of them ON me. I know that's not something you can answer either, but maybe you can give me some support along the way? Also, all of these are very cheap, so it's not a big thing if I'd ordered one (or a few) and didn't like them.

#3 was the first that caught my eyes. I like it! But not sure if it might be too much for me to start with?
#4 probably IS too much...
#5 is less of a statement, but maybe a better start? I don't want to feel overwhelmed, like the necklace is wearing me, so maybe this would be good to get used to that kind of necklace.
#6 is the only gold, also a bit more simple than the other ones but still very nice.
#7 and 8 were just so funny! Not at all a conventional kind of necklace, but I kind of like that!

Hm. On one hand I don't want to spend too much money. But on the other hand I'm not too happy about buying these super cheap things from China... Makes me wonder how they've been produced... So I did a quick search for more ethically produced accessories, and found these last two, #9-10.

#9 is definitely in line with the other necklaces I have! Very "me". But lots more expensive...
#10 was really funny!

So... what are your thought on these? Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to get one that's more casual, and one that's more "dressy"? To wear at different occasions and with different outfits. The dress in #2 is very casual, so with that maybe #5 (or #7/8 or even #6) would be more suitable, and for more dressier occasions maybe something like #3?

Would love to hear your thoughts!
