Jenn- this was a GREAT post. I to am in awe of your organization. You give me hope that I too can have such a wonderful small cohesive wardrobe.

I was especially interested in your breakdown of roles of essentials, statements, and completers in your different categories of clothing. I will have to think on that more.

Funny Jenn- while autumn is often the stablest weather and lovely, I prefer spring and summer so often feel a little sad. I think it is that it means a long winter ahead - with no holidays and celebrations like you have in the Northern Hemisphere (I have a birthday and of course there are parties and what not - but our Christmas is in summer, and Halloween is not a big deal and we don't do Thanksgiving.)

But I am off topic here and thread hijacking:)

Suz, a statement/completer/essential analysis sounds awesome! I would love to see that. Just for fun, I took ONE category from above and did a quick analysis. In the photo below, I'd categorize items like this:
Row 1 - statement, statement, completer
Row 2 - completer, essential, essential
Row 3 - statement, completer, completer
Row 4 - completer
That's 3 statements, 5 completers, and 2 essentials amongst my sweaters.

I think if you looked at tops, they'd be a bit more heavily-weighted towards essentials. Toppers would be weighted toward statements. The ivory cable knit pullover and the black turtleneck might very well be essentials in someone else's wardrobe (and the turtleneck used to be for me, but isn't anymore).

Sal, I'm a little envious of you just going into autumn, but I'm more excited for summer than I've been in quite a while! I'm pretty much the same way as you with basics. I used to be a bit more loosey-goosey with gear, but it's become a much more practical capsule now that I'm not mixing it in with my casual wear as often as I used to.

What a cohesive closet you have and such a tight and well thought-out wardrobe! I'm so impressed.

I don't think I can get my numbers back down this low. That is where I was a few years ago...but I kept adding.

But I'm planning to do a statements/ essentials/ completers analysis at some point soon because I might get some good information for editing there.

I also have a lot of basics that I don't count. I don't bother counting scarves, either. Or hats and stuff like that. I don't overbuy in these areas yet they add an important injection of variety -- you can keep a scarf for a long time before it gets dated and you might put it in a holding zone but if there is storage space, why not keep it -- or so my reasoning goes.

Well done on keeping things tight and cohesive - and not creeping up in size. You have all bases covered and some room for fun too ie your new embroidered jacket!!

I operate on a one in/one out system with basics 90% of the time - retire a sports tee, buy a new one - this area is not growing so I don't really worry about it.

Your plan sounds sensible for growth - I could see you in a dramatic tunic in summer, something like the ones Angie blogged about last week...

Our very hot weather has ended ( it is the last official day of summer but we will get lots of nice days in March and April, but usually the intense heat has passed). So I am making myself wear my summer dresses as in a fortnight or so they won't feel right... and tees and tops that I don't like to layer (which is a larger category than I would like to have) as come April I will need a layer on the top!!

LP, I decided it was a reasonable line to just not count anything in the “basics” category, and Angie includes gear and loungewear under that umbrella. If I were prone to overbuying things like socks or pajamas, I might have to do more thinking about that, but I’m pretty sensible about functional things. I have the same issue with winter accessories, to some extent. For example, we just have a basket of knit gloves and beanies in the front hall. They’re pretty much collective property.

I love posts like this! Your numbers seem very reasonable to me, and it's nice to see your uber-cohesive wardrobe all in one shot. I always get tripped up trying to decide what to count and what not to count. My "everyday" wardrobe is right about the same as yours -- 90ish items, probably 100 if I count 4-season accessories. But if I add in my gear, my loungewear, my "basics" in Angie's sense, and my huge collection of winter accessories (which is hard to count, because many DH and I use interchangeably), then I hit 200 pretty easily. Which in itself is sort of an instructive thought experiment for me, in terms of planning/budgeting... Can't get carried away buying too many lace dresses, when what I really need is more wool socks. Realities of a four-season climate, I suppose...

I like to do my annual wardrobe evaluation in mid-late August, so February is my halfway point, and time to start planning for spring. My August post is here, and I just did a quick count in my tracking app to update.
Graphic Tees and Layering Tees: 5 (1 plain tee, 4 graphic tees)
--August Count: 19 - I've changed the way I count these, and am no longer including items that Angie would classify as "basics." These are items used primarily for sleep/lounge. I've also gotten rid of a lot of t-shirts, though.

Shoes: 11 (1 heels, 5 boots/booties, 1 sandals, 1 flats, 1 oxfords, 2 sneakers)
--August Count: 12

Accessories: 15 (1 belt, 3 hats, 11 scarves)
--August Count: new category, not previously counted

Total Main Wardrobe: 94 items August Count: 99

Not exactly a fair comparison, as I've made changes to what I count and the way I count it, but I think it's accurate that my wardrobe is shrinking, as I get rid of chaff and find functional items that replace multiple others. This is especially true when you consider that I'm counting scarves, now, which is a huge category for me!

Full disclosure: I also have about 25 pieces of dedicated athletic/sleep/swimwear, some winter gloves (the cheap, knitted kind, as I tend to lose gloves), a lot of jewelry, many bags (I may have to start counting these next year), and a few costuming pieces.

I'm feeling pretty good about spring/summer. I'd like to add a work-from-home dress and maybe a pair of ballet flats and another pair of Chuck Taylors. Plus, I'll keep my eyes open for statement pieces, since my summer wardrobe has very few. Otherwise, I might just concentrate on updating gear/loungewear, which is looking tired.

Thanks for sticking with me! Adding some app screenshots, just for eye candy and visual reference.
