Wow Jenn, you look gorgeous in all of these. The new wardrobe additions and colour will fit seamlessly into your style.

I bought a light velvet jacket by Johnny Was last year and always think of you when I wear it. It has been extremely useful, and the embroidery (also on the back) is so pretty.

Just coming back as I was suffering from a virus when I responded a couple of days ago.

You have always dressed well - in all situations and the darkest of times, and I have always admired your lean practical but interesting closet.

I am pleased you are giving yourself grace to be more relaxed letting pieces in especially with more travel on the horizon. Your style is quite consistent so I don't see any additions that won't hold true in a couple of years.

My wardrobe has shrunk a bit - it's potentially temporary as I have edited out a few pieces that were not all that useful this year, and been careful with additions. I need to focus mostly on transitional pieces as I seem to be just fine in mid summer and mid winter - and those seasons are not that extreme here.

Good to see you Jenn and quite honestly I love this new direction for you -- I can feel the sense of ease come through your original post and I imagine that's something that's really welcome right now. It sounds like you are still wearing the heck out of your clothes so I have no doubt that even at the larger wardrobe size you'll still hit those wear counts you aim for. Love the color palette that you've described!

JAileen, I recently stumbled on the solarpunk microtrend that includes a lot of earthy greens and browns. I've been inspired by it!

Roberta, I'm a natural fiber gal too, but some of those gear fabrications are modern marvels! I'm also finding that heavy cotton and wool just don't pack well, so I've been adding pieces that lighten the load a bit.

Angie, I have suntiger to thank for the idea of the patterned harems. She has several pairs too. They were lifesavers during the long days of emergency rooms and hospitals and hospice early this year. Now, I mostly wear them as loungewear, but loungewear that feels fab!

Laurie, tis the season for burgundy! Nice to have it back! (And thank you for your lovely support, even while I was gone from active forum participation. I appreciated it.)

Sloper and Peri and Sal, hello my friends! It's nice to talk to you again!

Aquamarine, lots of burgundy fans this year! Hopefully, I'll be able to be more active here in the coming months. I just did not have the energy for fashion until the last few weeks.

Joy, good luck slimming your wardrobe, if that's what you want to do! It's definitely possible. Look at JenniNZ!

Suz, thank you for your kindness and reason! Life is pulling me in a lot of directions right now, but mostly in good ways. If I'm being honest, my lifestyle probably doesn't require a wide variety of clothes, but I'm enjoying being able to pull out just what I want to wear on any given day. Sometimes, it's the same things over and over, but those same thins change week-to-week and month-to-month. I'm just going with the flow.

Jaime, lovely to "see" you again! Hope you're staying safe and I've had your part of the world in my thoughts often recently.

Suntiger, honestly, I'm surprised too! They used to be staples for me, but I think many of my pieces just aged out of my wardrobe and they haven't been quite as ubiquitous at retail until recently!

Staysfit, I love hearing how your buying habits have changed. There are so many ways to enjoy our wardrobes and engage with fashion without that endless churn cycle and it can be so rewarding to find them.

Jenn, it's so good to hear your voice and see your summer outfits. I've often thought of you in the past months. Nice concise analysis here. I hope you are not feeling guilty that your closet is a bit larger than it used to be. Your wardrobe is as cohesive and hard working as ever, despite the higher numbers, and if you are going to be travelling more, you will need items that work in different climates, so why not cope with a little retail therapy? You are such a mindful shopper and get a lot of value from your clothing. It's not frivolous.

I think you will work out over the next few years what you actually need and what is overwhelm. If you are wearing and enjoying everything, and have room to store it, then it makes sense to hang onto things.

I love your new red/ burgundy direction and think the palette you describe is ideal for you!

I share your preference for sticking to a couple of footwear brands that work. It's really what I do, too. Almost all my shoes are either Eccos, or Cole Haans, with a few pair of Eileen Fisher and La Canadienne (very pricey even on sale but worth it when I can snag them, since for me they are the best fit of all.). I barely even look anywhere else now. I did buy a pair of Camper flats this summer and they seemed great in theory -- but in reality? Not so much. Sigh.

Hi Jenn, it’s great to see you are up to posting again. Your composite pictures are so fun to view. I never find your version of minimal dressing repetitive or boring. Adding some color, especially these lovely fall shades, plus the items mentioned, seems a great way to tweak what you have and hopefully add both nostalgia and comfort to your wardrobe moving forward.

A side note: You and Jenni NZ have been my inspiration to greatly reduce my wardrobe size. I read each of your posts and consider them carefully. Even though we have very different style personas I always learn something new. I am not diligent about wardrobe data like tracking wears, or daily outfit photos, however, from what I have learned reading your posts, I have decreased churn, spending, wardrobe size and have improved awareness about the sustainability factors of my purchases. I owe you many thanks. XO

Sooooo glad you feel up to posting, shopping, and thinking about your wardrobe and style again. It's healing and cathartic, I bet - especially as you become nostalgic about the things you wore at DS's age. Follow those feelings, and PLEASE carry on!

We've missed you! Your outfits always give me ideas on what I might do with my own closet. Which is, ahem, much more abundant than yours. I particularly like that dark red/burgundy you have acquired and would love to find some myself. Narrowing by color is tricky - is it red? Is it brown? Sometimes I just throw out "mahogany pants" to see what I come up with.

You're so right about travel expanding your wardrobe. My best friend, who is resolutely natural fiber gal, was really irked when she had to buy some ripstop nylon and other gear for an African safari. She had never set foot in an REI, hee hee.

I LOVE that Olive Green called your palette "relaxed desert luxe"!

Star, I was off burgundy for quite a while, too, after wearing it a lot 10-15 years ago. It makes me think about how, while I don't feel like I'm particularly trend-driven, I'm absolutely influenced by the colors, fits, and shapes I'm seeing in the world around me.

JenniNZ, my son being in his early 20s has made me nostalgic about many of the things I wore at that same age. The Mary Jane shoes are one of those throwbacks for me. I'm happy they've been making a comeback.

pirouette, wear the jeans! Although I do understand how visible it feels to wear color after sporting a mostly black wardrobe.

Dee, I don't want to go overboard, but it's nice to have the option of color when the mood strikes.

Olive Green, what kind words. Thank you! All of your additions sound like things I'd wear too!

Helena, you encapsulate how I'm feeling about the wardrobe size. It doesn't really feel like bloat. Just a natural ebb and flow, which is fine.

Robin, I learned about that way of showing outfits here! https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....t-tracking

Lisa, I feel like my wardrobe is getting less curated, but thank you! Making travel capsules has been a fun way to scratch my itch for those VERY highly-curated, cohesive capsules.

I always appreciate an analysis post! You have crafted a wonderful capsule wardrobe and you really have your colors and styled nailed, every outfit is spectacular. I love the vibe here.

I admire people with a well curated wardrobe that's under 100 items. I've tried that myself over the years and I've already slipped over that number, living in a 4 season climate for many years and being someone who likes a fair amount of variety, it was hard for me to keep the number of pieces low. This is so inspirational!

The new additions of burgundy, rust and camel are lovely for this wardrobe. Thanks for sharing!

I love your little picture boxes! Fun way to see how you have been dressing.

Burgundy and olive will be great colors to add and should go with everything already in your wardrobe. It can be a fun project to add some little capsules.

Yay to all of this Jenn ... Even though you've added some numbers, you still have a small and cohesive wardrobe. With a lifestyle transition it makes sense that you would add without getting rid ... Perhaps it will shrink down again in time or perhaps you need a bit more than you did. Love the colour additions ... Fab choices. Your outfits are always amazing!

I always think of you as relaxed desert luxe, with a lot of texture and natural fabric. You do California style so well, cant wait to see some of your more winter-y choices.
I am adding some Uniqlo unisex wide cord pants in dark olive and plan to wear the orange Doc Martens with all my olive outerwear.
I am looking at a couple of simple long sleeve fit and flare casual jersey dresses also, to wear with all the boots, also Uniqlo. More drab peasant folkloric than the colorful Sjoden line.
I love a shawl or wrap.
And glad to see you here again. You and Brooklyn are among my style heroes!

Always loved your relaxed bohemian style Jenn, and these burgundy finds look like wonderful additions to your wardrobe. Mixed in with rust, caramel and mustard, you'll have a rich tapestry of colours to play with going forward.

It’s great to see you post again Jenn I have missed you on the forum. The burgundy will be great especially with your fabulous hair. I also wear mainly black but it’s nice every so often to add a bit of colour. I recently bought black and red jeans but haven’t worn them yet I’m building up the courage to leave the house in them !

So lovely to hear from you Jenn, glad you feel able to post again.
I remember my burgundy shoes from 1980, when I was 19, with great pleasure. I don’t have any at present.
Your wardrobe is still not as big as my 147 counted items! But I have only bought 2 things this calendar year.

Nice to hear from you Jenn. I love your new pieces, very cohesive. I think burgundy must look amazing on you, especially with your beautiful hair. Great addition! I gather you will wear black and burgundy together quite a bit? I like that idea. I too am feeling burgundy this year, which I have not for many years. I do have a few neglected pieces in my wardrobe that will now get worn.
I love all the outfits you posted, very in synch with where I want my style direction to move currently. Burgundy footwear is so versatile, isn't it? I had a pair of boots in the early 00s that I wore into the ground. Yours are very cool.

I have added 3 black dresses, 1 black tunic shirt, 1 black button down, 1 black shell top and a rust tunic shirt to my wardrobe since Spring and I am loving them. Also a floral mango coloured peplum top, which is not a colour I ever wear, but really loving it, and a burgundy bucket bag. I have managed to sustain '1 in, 2 out' this year, and still hoping to reduce my wardrobe size eventually to around 120 (excluding belts, bags, scarves, hats, and sleep/lounge wear).

Hi all. It's been a while!

The last time I counted my wardrobe, in 2022, I had 84 items. That included all my scarves, belts, bags, outerwear, and footwear, as well as tops, bottoms, dresses, and toppers. Today, no longer counting scarves, belts, and bags, I have 105 items.

So…that’s a thing.

As a way of keeping tabs on myself and in touch with what’s in my closet, it’s been my tradition to post a count each August or September. I missed last year, but here’s a quick update.

Statistics:

Tops: 36 (last count: 22)
Bottoms: 10 (last count: 6)
Dresses and Jumpsuits: 20 (last count: 10)
Toppers: 21 (last count: 11)
Footwear: 15 (last count: 10)
Outerwear: 3 (last count: 3)

I still maintain a wears log and spreadsheet, so I know that about 35% of the items in my wardrobe have 30 or more wears, 40% have between 10 and 29 wears, and the remaining 25% have fewer than 10 wears. The median number of wears is 21 and the mean is 27.

Analysis and deep thoughts and such:

I’ve become a sort of loose uniform dresser. My bottoms are mostly either wideleg pants or jeans. Half of my 20 dresses are black. Two-thirds of my tops are black. I add interest with toppers and accessories.

For the most part, I’m perfectly okay dressing minimally in the summer. See my summer 2024 photo log below.

I’m re-adding burgundy (really, various shades of dark red, see Finds), olive (more wishful thinking than action so far), and some white to my wardrobe. Combined with mustard, rust, and caramel, this is the most color I’ve had in my closet in a long time. Despite all the black.

My lifestyle is in flux, and so is my wardrobe. I’m planning to spend more time traveling in the near future, which will require a more robust seasonal wardrobe than I’ve had over the past five years in California.

I've been buying a lot (for me) this year. Here's the whole collection of 24 items. I know it's a coping mechanism, but I guess it's pretty harmless as coping mechanisms go.

Most of my new shoe purchases have been coming from only three brands: Bed Stu, Birdies, and Converse. Honestly, these fit me well and cover most of my needs, so I don't really see that changing anytime soon! I quite enjoy just knowing my size and not have to futz around with experimentation and returns.

As always, I love hearing your thoughts, and I've missed you!
