Thanks for the welcome Jenn. I have a pretty light week next week so plan to go through my fall/winter wardrobe to see what still fits.
Hopefully I can come up with a small capsule to get me through the fall season.

Wow, this is certainly an eye-opener for me. I am inspired by your numbers and thoughtful approach. I realize that I am still a work in progress.

After several small edits over the years since joining YLF and one gigantic edit over a month ago, it's obvious to me that I still have way too many clothes. I'm looking at my 'summer closet' right now and while I'm afraid to count, I can tell I have way more than your entire wardrobe in this closet alone. Winter tops, winter pants, winter skirts, sweaters, all gear, outerwear, scarves, hats, gloves, sleepwear and all footwear are in different locations. I guess even my edited wardrobe is still a very large wardrobe. (Which was even larger when I worked in an office.) Your post is great motivation.

Lynn, hello fellow Coloradan!

Tammy, this made me laugh:
I didn't include jeans, tshirts, shorts, heavy sweaters, footwear, pajamas, workout clothes, etc in my count.
Pretty much my whole wardrobe is the stuff you didn't count!

Beth Ann, my LBD works for something like a funeral as well as a cocktail party (with an accessory swap, of course). I definitely have a wardrobe hole when it comes to something like a daytime wedding, but I'm at an age (40s) where there aren't a whole lot of those in my life.

Chris, the activity lists are definitely helpful! I find the numbers helpful too, because it helps me to acknowledge that yes, I have an absurd number of t-shirts.

Your wardrobe is exceptionally well balanced --- covering every base without excess. You mention a conference capsule, do you also have options for "special occasions?" like weddings or funerals. Because of singing, I can manage the more sorrowful occasions without much notice, but I'm going to a wedding tomorrow, and I feel all my options are a bit more casual -- more like fancy church -- than I'd like.

Also --- heck, yes to the leather jacket and yes to knitwear. With a small wardrobe, these items won't last as long.

Here are my numbers. (I work outside the home and wear business clothes 4 x per week. Also have weather extremes.)

Suits: 3 with pants/jackets and 1 with pants and dress, 1 skirt suit
Jackets/Blazers: 9
Skirts: 10
Pants/trousers: 8 (almost all are black!)
Tops/pullovers: 35 (I could do some editing there, but I wear them all!)
Blouses: 24 (some are sleeveless, some are short sleeve, some are long. Will probably keep them all. I wear them!)
Cardigans: 16 (I have a problem....)

I didn't include jeans, tshirts, shorts, heavy sweaters, footwear, pajamas, workout clothes, etc in my count. But I can say that I have 6 pairs of boots, 4 pair of booties, 8 pumps/heels for work, plus more.

I am not loving the volume, but I love the choice and flexibility I have with a wardrobe this size!

Jenn, you have inspired me to start thinking about my fall wardrobe. Due to weight gain from an injury I will have to replace most of my pants. Tops should still be OK. I really want to keep my fall wardrobe minimal as hopefully by spring I will be back to my usual size.
Your numbers are truly impressive. BTW I live in Colorado too :)

Yes our needs are pretty similar...my climate will be a lot wetter, and I probably work in a more conservative field (but I really can wear anything I want).

Aside from that it is just preferences as you lean to a more creative look with great hats and scarves, and I probably lean to quite a simple sporty type look.

I am now looking forward to sorting my things out.

I don't do exact one in one out, but approximate. I have grown in footwear and probably decreased in tops over the last year.

Elizabeth, it sounds like you love your closet, though! I definitely still have some 7s and below, but I'm working on it.

smittie: Of course, I cropped out my husband's mass of t-shirts hanging below my things, so it doesn't look quite so cohesive in real life (and the light is terrible in there!) He did a major cleanout recently too, thus all those empty hangers in the back.

JAileen: I feel like having less also forces me to keep up on the laundry a little better than I would otherwise. I'm not disciplined about doing it on a regular day each week, so I'd let it pile up if I could.

kerry: do post when you're finished! I love seeing everyone's analysis!

chewyspaghetti: Your list really shows how climate comes into play. We have similar numbers in total, but I bet you wear shorts, sandals, and summer dresses for a bigger chunk of the year than I do!

I'm curious, so I'll bite!

8 dresses (5 summer, 2 transitional, 1 fall)

10 toppers (3 vests, 4 cardigantype and 2 jackets)

Skirts-2

Tops- 27 (9 sleeveless, 12 short sleeve, and 6 long sleeve)

Tees/tanks-12

Shoes- 15 pair (5 sandals, 5 boots/booties, 5 others)

Shorts- 5 pair ( two are the exact same black pair bought for work and don't get much use)

Sweaters-3 ( one chunky tunic that only gets worn on the coldest days)

For a total of 86 items

I have several items which need to be upgraded.

I think I am need of long sleeve tops, toppers, jeans, and layering sweaters.

I'm impressed by your very tidy closet and how you counted everything! I have no idea how many items you need in each category. I have at least a dozen long sleeve tees, for example, because I wear them everyday in winter and don't want to run out before laundry day. Since it appears you have considered those issues, then you probably have enough.

I think others have made some good points about wardrobe holes, but I wanted to comment on how pretty all the colours and patterns are in your closet. It all goes together nicely.
You're doing a great job staying focused on what you need and how new pieces will work with your existing wardrobe.

I think my wardrobe is about 50-60 pieces. I'm too heavy on jeans, and WAY too light on sweaters and even though I have quite a bit of footwear, it's not enough. To me 88 pieces sounds like a good number.

Jenn, it's hard to find the sweet spot when you own the candy store :) Put it this way... my shoe collection alone has numbers pretty close to your entire wardrobe. Some numbers I just can't say out loud, let alone put to print. I'm going through a different type of exercise this summer to figure out exactly what I DO wear, and lets just say it's humbling. And the worst part? Pretty much all of it is 8-10s... so stuff I like, that just can't get worn unless I change six times a day. Or move :)

Sterling, my leather jacket hunt is reminding me how much easier it would be to compromise, and how often I've done it. There are certain stores that I just avoid now because of the large number of their items in the donate pile. Yeah, I got one winner from LOFT, but paired with the four losers (most of which looked great until the first wash), that's too low of a hit rate for me.

The only hole I see is an utter lack of corduroy! I couldn't get through fall/winter without a couple pairs of cords -- much cozier than denim when it's cold. And I think it would make sense with your color palette and casual style.

Re: tweed shorts -- sometimes Banana Republic does cute wool blend shorts. I had a pair years ago for just that sort of winter wear, over tights or leggings. I even paired them with a wool newsboy cap, IIRC.

Your wardrobe seems perfect. From what I read, you have all of your bases covered and there isn't a lot of duplication or waste. Congratulations. You have achieved what I only dream about. Also the pictures of your closet are gorgeous.

FWIW, most of the women I know have wardrobe churn. There are a very few that don't, but I believe they just keep the offenders in the back of their closet. I made a list of the pieces that lasted less than a year in my closet. In every case, they were poor quality items that failed to serve their original purpose. I was literally relieved to dump them. Some of them didn't even make it to the Goodwill. They were used as rags.

Thanks, viva. And yes, that's me. Sometimes I feel like there are no walls in my house that don't contain books or boardgames. Maybe I feel compelled to have a smaller closet to balance all the other stuff in this house. ;)

I love this post! It's so inspiring - it's definitely time for me to do this again and this is he perfect time of year to do it. Like Suz I was surprised to see so few jeans ... But I don't have that many more, I don't think. Still, I think you could add a lighter pair if you liked. I love the winter shorts suggestion! Talk about a wildcard! And would be so perfect for posing in front of your books and board games (that's you, right?). I think you could definitely pull off a slightly longer pair. (Leave the booty-huggers to the young-uns).

Thanks for the inspiration, Jenn. I'm a little afraid of how my wardrobe has grown since I last counted but that's probably because I've added some really great things. And maybe it's time to say goodbye to some things I am not wearing, too.

Deb, too funny, I was thinking I have a lot of jeans. I mean, I wear them multiple times between washes and there are only seven days in a week!

Suz, it's definitely nice to be in a spot where I can think about fun wildcards. I don't feel like I need that right now, but I'll keep those ideas on the back burner for if I start to feel bored/uninspired. Our weather does run from temps below 0°F to above 100°, but the lack of humidity makes it feel more mild than in other places. We also have vast daily temperature swings, year-round, so it's easier to layer than to have a lot of dedicated items for hot/cold days.

Maneera, I put cardigans in the toppers category and counted pullovers with tops. I don't wear a -ton- of knitwear, honestly, because I run hot and our daily temperature swings can make pullovers impractical, but some days, nothing but a cozy sweater will do, and I have two acrylic sweaters I'd like to replace with something better.

Oh how my analytical heart is warmed! I didn't use to be like this. I used to do everything by feel! Weird.

gradfashionista, I did culottes the last time around and liked them, but I tried some on this past spring and it just didn't do anything for me. I'm not saying I won't get there, but I'm also not heavily trend-influenced. However...Aida, I do like some of those looks you posted. #6 is my favorite, maybe with riding boots instead of the stilettos.

Sally, I have some friends who split time between Colorado and New Zealand (he's Kiwi, she's American), and it seems like the two places have a lot of lifestyle values in common, so it makes sense that we'd have similar wardrobes. My activity list would be similar to yours, with some changes and exceptions:
- small conference capsule
- craft shows
- city weekend away
- soccer games
- bbq or inside dinner at friends
- comfy but smart work from home gear
- attending school events (I won't be doing my weekly volunteering at the school this year, but there are always things going on)
- husband's office events and dinners out
- any upcoming parties/birthdays/weddings etc
- could I throw together an outfit for an interview or a funeral
- active wear for the sports I do
- camping and hiking

I will go read your old thread too!

What category do your sweaters (or jumpers or pullovers or winter knitwear) fall into?

In winters, I wear a lot of long sleeved tees with a jumper, paired with jeans. Since I work from home, I don't often wear jackets at home. It's either a sweater or a sweatshirt that allows for easy movement.

So do you only wear long sleeved tees with jackets? I kind of remember you in sweaters from last winter!
