I know you will look fab but I understand the stress this might cause. Is there any budget to hire Angie remotely to help with the packing list? She knows Japan too as a plus. Just a thought.

I will be watching your packing capsule with interest as I am planning a cruise from San Diego to Hawaii and back in February with Mr. Hubs. It will be cool as we head down the coast and out on the ocean, then tropically hot as we near the islands. So kinda similar weather extremes, and we're planning some good healthy activities while we're there, sand, rocks, swimming, etc. Plus I gotta bring an evening gown for formal night ha ha! I just might as well pack my whole closet.

I think color will be your salvation, because color elevates an item from fair to fab, no matter if it is a mud boot or a Manolo. Have fun planning!

MaryK, final suggestions : a tailored knit blazer that can look both casual, like a sweater, or more sophisticated. I also love to travel with black ponte "jeans". I can wear them hiking on a trail or dressed up for dinner.

For some reason my last post didn't link to the "sports" ballet shoes that I bought , Makena at Peltz shoes and on sale for $55.

tights are great to layer in the cold

Jeans and boots will be too hot for SE Asia, I think. I can't stand wearing boots in 80 degree weather here in Kingston. It is humid here and yet NOTHING like SE Asia. I don't even wear boots until it goes well below 60 here. It's not the temperature. It's the humidity.

You are going to look amazing and fashionable whatever you bring! But I second the suggestions for a lightweight shoe like the one Gaylene linked to, and/or sandals. Also clams or shorts with a few easily hand washable tops, and one or two easy dresses -- I like the synthetic knit or jersey idea. If it wouldn't be too hot you could even take the wonder dress for those few dressier occasions. You'll want at least something that covers shoulders and knees in case of any temple viewing, etc. There may not be any official rules but it is nice to be prepared just in case.

Can't wait to see your travel pics!

Gaylene is right. There are so many great shoes that are as comfy as sneakers. I just bought these

http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....00_s01_i00

http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....00_s01_i00

http://www.landsend.com/pp/wom.....038;sku_0=::D26&CM_
(in navy stripe...they are uber comfortable )

because we do a big and varied activity and weather trip every year. I say think about everything that you will be doing and have at least one outfit for it or pieces that can handle cross activities.

I also loved these, but couldn't find my size :

http://www.amazon.com/Jambu-Wo.....ords=jambu

Personally, I like toe guards ( closed shoes ) when traveling. It is safer and more comfortable for me and more modest for some countries. You can also do almost any activity and not worry about your toes.

Please wear anything new before you leave so that you can get a good idea of what will work.

Eighty degrees doesn't sound bad, but as others have said, don't forget about the humidity. My parents are from Vietnam, and now we live in Houston, so we know all about humidity!! Jeans (even the BF jeans) and boots will be too hot for SE Asia, I think. Summery dresses, and cargo capris or shorts will be comfortable.

Have a great trip! My cousin did a cruise along the Mekong river a few years ago and loved it!!

IMO jeans or any heavy pants will be too hot. Cotton, linen - natural fibres because of the humidity. Either skirts or shorts are fine but I would take long pants & a long sleeve linen/cotton shirt or top - mosquitoes!!!!! I worry about the boots being sweaty too.

Mary, I am a super casual traveler, when it comes to leisure trips, so take my word with a grain of salt. I suggest you go with a primarily casual attire. I usually leave 90% of my dressy stuff behind. That means no fussy tops, no items I primarily wear to work, no structured skirts like the halogen, no formal blazers or work trousers etc. For the colder portion of the trip I would, as you stated, bring your NYC capsule.

For the hotter portion, I think you have a pretty nice collection of colorful dresses. I would bring a couple of those, along with that linen a-line skirt you have, the BF jeans, a couple shorts, if you have and wear them, maybe some cargo capris, along with some flat booties or a casual sandal with a good grip, since you are on a boat. For tops, stick to cotton blends and whatever washable silk items you have.

My mantra for these trips is "Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy". My clothes should reflect the leisure aspect of my trip and should allow me to be comfortable and relaxed, while blending in with my environment and the people I'm traveling with, to some extent.

I have no doubt you will be the most stylish woman in that boat

Shameless plug for boat shoes a la Sperry Topsider. I've also been loving a breezy dress for the heat lately. If you can find rayon, you can sweat in it all day, wash, and the wrinkles pretty much fall out on their own. And if they don't right away, the um... body heat and humidity kind of steams the fabric as you wear it... o_0

Oooh, do you have the J Crew linen shirt or something similar, Mary? That would be fab for your trip...

I still love the idea of boots, but personally 80 and humid would be too hot for me and boots. But it's all up to your personal warmth and comfort level. I bet Angie would be fine in boots in that weather, for example.

That sounds like an exciting trip!
I agree with the knit dress suggestions, or a loose linen or chambray shirt with a cotton skirt or bermudas. (You'd have to be comfortable with a slightly rumpled look for your shirts- which I am, when traveling)

The Skechers sound good, but I think boots sound gawd-awful for hot humid weather!

Comfort and practicality need to be the first concerns, but I have no doubt that you will be fab no matter what!

"washable synthetic knit dresses" are my suggestion as well. No issues with ironing... stuff them in a suitcase with no worries... wash out easily and dry fast... throw on some cute shoes and you are done.

Sounds like a fabulous trip.

I'd second Mo's suggestion of a cotton skirt and flats worn with a variety of tops. Personally, I prefer a straight-cut, knee length skirt in a pattern, or deeper color, so I can sit anywhere without worrying about marks. Although I like them on others, I find floaty, longer skirts don't work as well if I'm active or if the wind is blowing.

I bought a pair of these Ecco shoes in a light grey earlier this summer and they have been my go-to casual shoe with shorts and skirts this year. Practically indestructible and enough support to let me walk anywhere. These are fairly sporty, but Ecco has other styles that are a bit more dressy.

http://www.zappos.com/ecco-lite-skimmer-ii-misty

And don't forget a cute, summery hat to keep the sun off your face!

ETA: Having said all that, my best friend recently spent time in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia and, in almost every picture, was wearing a short-sleeved, white!! , cotton dress with a full, floaty skirt that came just below her knees. She wore it with a wide, woven leather belt, similar-toned leather sandals, and a natural-colored, wide-brimmed straw hat. She looked amazing in every picture!

Oooh, Vietnam and Cambodia! I was there 2 years ago in November -- it's going to be a blast.

I assume the Cambodia portion of your trip involves the Siem Riep region. May I ask if you're going to have some time to wander the temple complexes independently? If so, you'll want one outfit that's a variant of the shorts-n-tees formula (obviously, it must make you feel fab!); clamboring around temples in a skirt will be tricky without sturdy shoes and lots of leg mobility. But beyond that, I think you're free to wear what you love.

Keep in mind that the locals themselves wear tees, shorts, and rubber flip-flops, because that's what works for their climate. I worry about the humidity making the boots into little sweaty ovens. Is it possible to borrow from their wisdom but still remain true to your style? Dressy wovens? Structured skirts? Fab jewelry?

ETA: Ooh, how about a wrinkle-free white woven, the Angie-recommended "Blocks of Color" scarf, gray clams (to hide dirt), and loafers?

MK, don't stress! And how fun is this trip going to be?!

So my friend works for Crocs in Chicago and it is amazing how they have expanded their line beyond those rubber clogs from years ago.

I would go with something like this:

http://www.crocs.com/crocs-wom.....womens-new

Cute, stylish, lightweight and perfectly rinsable/washable in case you have to step in something, um, mushy or undesirable, but they look like ballet flats otherwise and provide toe protection.

Good luck!

Mochi, we will be in Hiroshima and Osaka, which are not super cold, but will seem wintery to this So Cal girl! And yes, I plan to be as fab as possible in Japan because the Japanese are very fab indeed!!

I'd totally go for a cotton cargo skirt and easy tops with flats.

How hot is it going to be? Can you wear boots with your shorts or something? (I'm thinking something combat boot-ish, like Docs, that you could also wear in the cold places).

Otherwise, I'd go for something like a cotton sundress with cute sneakers. Denim clams and pretty tops?

Mary, is your son in Okinawa? It is still warm there in the wintertime, I'm thinking? But if it's Tokyo or Yokohama or thereabouts you're right, it'll be cold.

It'll be great if you can manage a simplified version of fab, because people in Japan do dress very nicely. Enjoy your amazing-sounding adventure!

Ditto to Sarah;s comments...however will add the following - don't you have a lovel blue and white stripped topper - this with a pair of white pants (capris, boot cuts whatever) would look casually sophisticated. and maybe that's the trick to keep packing minimal - stick to 1 basic colour palette - that way you don't have to take so many shoes...

ETA - so now I'm reading the part about mud - maybe you work your wardrobe around jean bottoms- still great with so many of your wardrobe items.

Um, excuse me, but I've seen you look awfully stylish in shorts, tees, and sneaks.

Just sayin'

Hubby and I are going on a fantastic trip in December -- two weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia, including a week-long cruise down the Mekong River, followed by a four-day visit with our Marine in Japan. Packing is going to be challenging because I want to limit it to one big suitcase plus a carry-on, but I have to pack for both cold weather (in Japan and Hanoi) and hot weather (in Cambodia and South Vietnam).

I have my cold-weather capsule pretty well taken care of, I think. I will bring skinny jeans and layering tops and boots, a la my February trip to NYC, and it should be fine.

But I am worried about the cruising/warm weather portion of my travel capsule. I've seen photos of the ship and the passengers, and it's mostly women my age and older wearing capris and short-sleeved tops and sensible shoes and looking oh-so-touristy and not at all fashionable. Like, at all.

My constraints are as follows:

1. I need closed shoes that can go from boat to muddy riverbank to rickshaw without any fuss. I have a couple of pair of Sketchers that would probably work for this -- one tan and one dark gray.

2. It's going to be hot.

3. Everything needs to be washable and I can't count on there being pressing facilities available.

Should I just give up on trying to look stylish and wear shorts, tees, and sneaks? Or does anybody have any ideas to maintain my fabness within the above constraints?
