If I were making a summer wardrobe “from scratch”, I’d start by listing the types of activities I’d like outfits to cover, then define each activity proportionally according to how many outfits I’d likely need. (This could mean three concerts need three outfits, and three hikes only need one.)
My activities would not take covid quarantine into account, because we all hope that will be less by summer. For example:

1. Most of day at home, chores, hobbies, yard work, walks. 4-5 days/week. Shorts, sleeveless knit tops, sneakers or sandals.

2. Most of day in town, shopping, errands, coffee with friend, art group at senior center, appointments. 1-2 day/week. Shorts, casual skirts, sleeveless blouses, light topper, sandals, sneakers, jewelry accessories, bags.

3. Church. 1/2 day/week. Skirts, matching tops, cotton dresses, sandals.
4. Date night, local music or concert, dinner with friends, have company at home. 2-3 x/week. Light chinos or pants, crop jeans, midi skirts, dressier tops, light toppers, sandals, accessories, bags, sandals.
5. Hiking, running, beach (on vacation). Portions of several days a week. Lots of gear needed, various climates may be included if on vacation to mountains, beach, nature areas.

There you have it.

As I'm getting older, tolerating the heat is getting more and more difficult. Plus the climate changes mean that now we have now higher temperatures during the summer. Fortunately, in recent years I have purchased quite a few clothes that make my high summer easier, especially loose-fitting dresses, and linen and cotton among the materials. But to tell you the truth, staying stylish and put together is not easy for me when the temperatures are high. If had to start from the beginning, then I would buy quite a few dresses in various colors, 2-3 skirts, 2x cotton pants 7/8 length, 2x bermuda shorts (I don't wear the shorter versions), 1 jeans jacket or a longer linen shirt, 2 cotton or linen cardigans, 6-10 tops that look nice on their own (linen knits is wonderful), 2-3 nicer tops for the evening, few scarfes. Shoes: Birkentock Gizeh in at least two colors, Ecco sandals and sneakers. Plus 2 bags, sunglasses, jewerly (I like necklaces in the summer as a third piece)... Did I forget anything?

My summer workhorse are denim skirts, dark denim and white, a “jean jacket” made of white handkerchief linen, a tee shirt dress, Capri or ankle pants, especially in linen. Silk button down shirts used as light toppers. I like natural undyed linen and breezy sleeveless tops. I never go out without sunglasses and/or a brimmed sun hat. Looking at what you still have from last summer, it looks like you have a good start on a red, white and blue/navy color scheme.

RunCarla, what a great time to plan - but stay flexible as you plan! - for high Summer :)

I LOVE Summer dressing. Personally I stick to breezy dresses, skirts, cropped white jeans, and cute Summer pants with shirts and blouses. All roomy and made of natural fibres. Straw hat and prescription sunnies are vital. Sneakers because I barely wear sandals. Sometimes I bust them out - like I did in Italy. And a slew of denim jackets for when it's breezy.

I get very high heat and know how to dress for it. It's how I grew up! I like to cover up in the heat, which might differ to you. I don't wear shorts unless I'm swimming with Sam, or at the beach in a cozzie.

Lots of great ideas from the others. Hope you're inspired.

Daytime temps 30deg.C ?? I have a tiny capsule for that, just long enough to survive with one load of laundry a week for the two week heat spells we occasionally have in our summers :). Were I to create one that needn't be work appropriate, I'd probably go for:
2 sleeveless dresses
2 pairs of linen ankle pants
2 pairs of cotton chino bermudas
1 pair of denim shorts
3 basic tank tops
3 printed sleeveless tops
1 sleeveless button-down
1 chambray or lightweight cotton shirt for layering
1 lightweight cardigan
2 denim jackets (1 white, 1 blue)
1 pair of sporty sandals or Birkenstocks
1 pair of flat gladiator sandals
1 pair of cotton sneakers (Converse type)
(All the toppers in the assumption that mornings and evenings are cooler.)
Of course if my entire summer was that hot and I'd wear almost only shorts like you I'd probably get 7 pairs, and a stylish playsuit to mix things up.

Yes, Suz, summer clothes take a beating (more frequent laundering) and don’t last as long. I still have the white dress, but the red one was retired after 2 summers. Not bad for a $5 thrifted dress.

I like the idea of switching into an easy dress for the pm, after the post gardening wash-up.

Yeah, southern Ontario is hot, if you don't have AC. Not as bad on the lake as inland, but even so...

You may have a microclimate where you are, too -- it might be hot if you are in the garden, for instance, and less hot nearer the water.

Kingston was a bit cooler than where you are, but we still got at least 2 months of hot every year. And humid.

To go back to the purchase plan...I'd start the footwear hunt in March. You'll be able to find sandals online starting then, maybe even February, but for me it was always too early to think of it, then.

Clothing search can start in thrift stores between March - June -- depending on when they put stuff out. Hard to say when high summer items will appear online at retail.

You have done really well with summer dresses from thrift in your new town, right? You got the white one and the red print one, and from your WIWs, you wore both of those quite a lot. I do find that many summer dresses are "done" in two years rather than three, especially if worn a great deal. In years when I've only owned two, they lasted 2 years. In years where I owned 3 or 4, they lasted much longer. My current summer dresses will all probably do me for another season or two, but I don't wear them as often now that I live in a more temperate place.

I got a pair of these Icebreaker shorts for hikes last year, and holy moly, I really love them and they look nice enough for casual outings! They're much lighter weight and cooler than denim.

I don’t think every summer is quite that hot here, actually. But I guess my perception is somewhat skewed by going away to the cottage where it’s generally cooler, as well as working in an office with A/C normally. Still, I can remember cooler, rainy summers in the past decade. Always a few hot days though.
When looking for light weight tops consider whether they are gauzy, sheer or eyelet and will require an under layer and what that might be - a lot of linen tees are pretty sheer, for example. I find this to be a fatal flaw with so many summer tops that should be breezy. I don’t find camis, even wicking under layers like Uniqlo Airism, to be cooling.

@ Lisap - the counting exercise was an eye opener. I’ve been investing in clothes I wear 2/3 of the year, and in some cases 2-3 months, but basically treating 4 months (mid May to mid September) as an afterthought.

I’m going to (1) create a capsule list culled from all the ideas above, (2) shop my existing closet, and (3) identify wardrobe holes and strive to fill them.

Link to Finds - items I wore last summer that I still have in my closet. https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....ction=9521

@ nemosmom - I don’t think lockdown had a huge impact. I would have been in the UK for 2-3 weeks in May https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....-uk-in-may and wouldn’t have worn shorts, and then another trip in September - but otherwise, I am a shorts wearer.

I would have changed out of shorts and dressed up a bit for the weekly bridge game Tuesday night, a concert we had tickets for, and a monthly date night over the summer, but otherwise activities (and clothes) would be the same.

However, I would now be packing for a winter escape to the Caribbean (and that’s not happening) and needing those shorts!

The only thing that would be different is if we had some bizarre weather. Since relocating to southern Ontario, it’s been hot enough for AC from Mid May through September. So, yeah, it’s time for me to commit to assembling a high summer capsule! I’m reading all the suggestions, and open to everything, including light weight trousers, skirts, and dresses.

I cannot live without linen in the high summer. if I were to build from scratch, I would need 2 pairs of linen wide leg pants. Then linen or whisper weight t shirts along with linen button downs. A few years ago I discovered linen sweaters. I especially like long ones. I only have one pair of shorts and they are denim and more than enough. For activities I love the super lightweight nylon pants. Some are great enough to even wear in the city. They keep me cool and protect me from the sun. I would need at least one of those. Like the link below. One in navy or black or charcoal and one in a color like red or berry.

I also absolutely would need a couple of dresses. I have a couple of sports dresses that I LOVE.

Question for you, Carla - Do you think lockdown was a factor in wearing your shorts so often last summer? If you had been traveling, do you think you would have worn pants/skirts?

Carla, you and I are both retired and do similar activities. Mr. SF does not have 'the thing,' but he does have a boat. I am not a fan of the boat, but that is not the subject of this thread.
I have a shortage of summer clothing, and it always seems that way. Why is that?
I wear long light cotton pants, and long-sleeved light cotton tops most of the time. The sun and insects have won, and I have given up on bare arms and legs. You probably don't have the same problem with the insects where you live.
In my dreams, I would have:

3 pairs of long cotton lightweight pants (I have 2)
1 pair of boyfriend denim shorts (I have 0)
1 patterned skirt (I have 1)
1 denim skirt (I have 0 that fit)
1 casual dress ( I have one that is vavoom, so it doesn't really count)
1 pair of wide-legged linen pants for dressy occasions (I have 1)

5 long-sleeved lightweight cotton tees (I have 3)
3 long-sleeved lightweight shirts, either button-up or peasant-style (I have 1)
4 short-sleeved lightweight cotton tees in good shape (I have 3)
2 denim shirts (I have 4)
3 nicer long-sleeved tees for special occasions (I have 4)

4 denim/chore jackets (I have 3)
2 nice summer blazers (I have 1)
1 nice summer cardigan for dressing up (I have 1)

2 pairs of sneakers that I can hike in (I have 2)
2 pairs of Birks that are fancy (I have 2) - I am limited in footwear
2 pairs of Birks that are every day (I have 1 Birks and 1 Finn)
1 pair of something else--I am going to try a pair of Dr. Liza ballet flats

If I could, I would wear espadrilles. I love the look of them, but my feet don't love them anymore.

Straw clutch with gold chain (I have one)
Leather and canvas bag (I have one)

Wow you have gotten some great advise and some great visuals. For me it starts with the shoes. Then I usually build a wardrobe around that and what I actually do in the summer. What materials wear well like walking. King walks I know I use gear because they wear well and I get to have flowery structure because I get hot hot hot in the summer

Oh, on color everything was grounded in either army green or black, with accents of terra cotta. Some additional colors crept in via stripes, but they weren’t the focus. I had an existing Free People terra cotta linen sweater and a jeans jacket for cool evenings. I picked up a new green cropped cotton chore jacket. I also had an existing green linen trench style jacket.

We were at our cabin for the shutdown so I did a casual summer that sounds a lot like you describe. For hiking I bought two pairs of Merrell’s, one for trail running and one high top for more challenging terrain. I wore existing Capri length Mountain Hardware hiking pants and existing Gottex workout ts, and lots of baseball caps. For the rest of the time I wore a pair of olive green summer weight culottes from Madewell, an Antonio Melani cotton poplin skirt, a pair of Worth long black shorts, two Talbots washable cotton skirts in sporty patterns, three sleeveless summer dresses (random sourcing from Patagonia, Chico’s and Tommy Bahama), and an existing pair of cropped jeans. I made the following errors: I bought half a dozen Talbots t-shirts that are just fine in the abstract but the cut really isn’t modern enough. I also brought up two pairs of Jacks I never wore. What I did wear were my two pairs of espadrilles, a pair of Keds-like canvas sneakers, my Havianas, and some swim shoes.

Great topic! I did buy a number of new things this past summer and will be reviewing for what worked/ stays/ goes/wardrobe holes.

I do a lot of yard and garden work, hours at a time, so have an actual capsule for that. You might call it gear but it’s not predominantly “ exercise “ items or fabrics. Old jeans when temps not much over 80 ( leg protection is helpful for as long as temps allow), then rugged cotton cargo shorts. T’s and then tank tops but with a LS linen or cotton button- front shirt over. I get some shirts at places like TJMAXX inexpensively so don’t feel precious, size up a bit for layering and ventilation. I have cotton tanks and a couple from Athleta in Tencel. Tank fit at neck and armholes is tricky, so lots of styles don’t work for me in fabrics I’d like to try. Shoe capsule of Columbia hiking-type sneakers and boots and a leather boot and some slip- on rubber garden shoes. Wool socks/ quarter-top socks. Some of these items overlap with hiking capsule.

I seldom wear shorts out on any errands— too cold in grocery and elsewhere. So long or cropped/ankle pants in cotton are needed- prefer tailored styles. Really need a good well- fitting full- length chino that’s cooler than jeans. Have some wider- leg linen blends.

Several T ‘s in cotton , linen or rayon. Solids, prints, stripes.

I like the coolness and “ away from skin” fit of wovens also, and the high - enough v- neck look from collared shirts, so have a few buttons- front SS shirts, and woven rayon “ drapey” T’s.

For shorts I like to have a tailored chino type fabric with set m- in waistband as well as some knit shorts / elastic waist for walking or relaxing. My trusty EB khaki cotton shorts are many years old , and I have not found a replacement— any new shorts need higher waist ( not for fashion, but for my long rise), long enough, fit - a HEWI.

I love the look of longer- sleeved shirts and knit sweaters over shirts, and can wear that in the house on many days.

Fashion sneakers maybe, I have a couple types, but they seem pinchy now, so not sure what style next will be practical. I need more of a running/ walking sneaker for long walks- Brooks is working well for me now.

Also used a summer loungewear capsule in pandemic. This is after after- gardening shower , free of sunscreen and tick repellent, but not ready for pj’s. Usually not- shorts pants by then, but light-weight. Shoe capsule of indoor almost- slippers- I found some types of slip- on Sketchers and a memory foam kind of loafer. After a lot of digging or walking, your feet will know what are “ aahhh” shoes. Especially ones that feel good without socks - I don’t do sandals much so these are my foot- resting/ breathing shoes.
Very lightweight jackets for errands. A big challenge to get structure that is cool enough and does not look out of place with summer casual clothes, but good for air- conditioning. I have cotton cargo- safari type in a few neutrals. And some linen. Also some lightweight blazers that go best with either jeans or tailored pants, if I were doing some pre- pandemic activities.

Also a ROTG lifestyle and high summer weather sounds similar. I also live in cotton shorts and tops and some skirts, a couple of looser dresses. Last year I thrifted a very light linen relaxed unlined blazer and it was fabulous for some evenings when a denim jacket is out of the question heat-wise.

I live in the UK, summers here are usually mild (up to 28 degrees). I tend to feel cold very easily so I usually wear lighter layers of natural fibres like cotton, silk and viscose.

Sometimes there is spell of heatwave (up to 35 degrees), I've been planning a linen capsule wardrobe for such heatwaves, which I can also use for holidays :), I am slowly adding some pieces every year.

This would be my HEWI heatwave capsule

- 1 linen scarf (bought last summer)
- 1 linen trousers (bought last summer)
- 2 linen jumpsuit (bought 1 last year, may add another next year)
- 2 linen dress

(hopefully one this year)

- 1 linen skirt (hopefully this year)
- 2 linen tops (hopefully one this year,

may add another next year)
- panama hat
- straw bag

I am planning to limit the palette to cream, grey, pink and black.

I reckon this capsule could easily be ok for a month, at least I hope so!

Color: you may want to build a summer wardrobe around a few accent colors and a light and a dark neutral. I like red, white and navy blue for patriotic holidays plus yellow and green. I also like wearing dark colors in summer because you can balance the dark with skin and you feel like you are shaded. I saw a young woman at a festival all in dark brown looking fabulous. She used a tank with brown lace at the bottom. I could see you using red, white and blues.

I find that I love the IDEA of color in summer, but in reality I wear mostly white or black to hide sweat as I trundle about on public transport. Color comes in through accessories. Woven straw or fabric bags, flat yet supportive sandals and water shoes/hiking shoes. Lots of jewelry (in a typical non-mask-wearing year). Undershorts to prevent chafing under skirts. If any jeans, they are very lightweight and well ventilated (with holes!)

This is a great idea, Carla. Starting to plan now will pay you major dividends when the season begins. Warning -- it may take some time to find things online...sandals tend to show up first (I used to buy my sandals in March), followed by fashion items a bit later.

I don't have what I'd consider "high" summer any more! Need for capsule erased!

BUT, having said that, here is the type of thing I really wore in high summer in Ontario.

(At least ) one dark, one light (i.e. white) knee-length short.
(At least) two summer dresses. Think linen cotton blends.
(At least) two casual summer skirts. Think linen, cotton lawn, etc.
(At least) 2 light, 3 patterned, and 1 dark sleeveless or cotton lawn top.
A couple of graphic or patterned tees.
A couple of plain linen knit tees.
A couple of longer sleeved lightweight shirts for cooler days.
Denim jacket for evening.
2 pair of casual sandals and one dressier one.

Below are some items still in my closet which happen to work in the current (not as hot) climate as well, although their season is shorter, so they get less wear.

In your case, I think you'll have to do a careful calculation about how often you wear gardening outfits outside the garden, i.e. how much of the high summer do you spend working vs. going out and about? If you are working the garden, you'll be wearing gardening gear and won't need as much in terms of regular outfits. LaPed might offer a good model. I'm learning this is my need now, too, in suburbia -- to have clothes that do a bit of crossover from one setting to another.

In Kansas it got hot in February or March and stayed hot until late October or even Thanksgiving. I wore only sleeveless tops or the smallest of cap sleeves. All my traditional short sleeved teeshirts were hacked. Sleeves cut off at the seam and often the neckline too.
I got too old for shorts and wore ankle pants or skirts and dresses. If my
ankles and shoulders were bared, I felt cool. Pants at full length that can have the legs rolled are the gold standard. You do not want anything tight and all should be washable, but natural fibers
Footwear. My co tor said no sandals on my diabetic feet. I discovered the coolness of perforated leather and fabric shoes like espadrilles and canvas slip on athletic shoes. Do not go barefoot and protect your feet. This summer I hope to try water or beach shoes that can go into the water yet protect from glass. Sharp sand and rocks.
I will be watching this thread for other ideas.
