Good move to start getting ready for fall! You are being so disciplined! I am still buying a few summer things as I tend to not enjoy shopping for it as much as for fall, and I think I have more winter clothing (certainly jackets) then I do warm weather clothing.

This is a fantastic list IK and I think I'm going to copy it. I did start some fall planning with the arrival of NAS and my fun money. All of those purchases will be tucked away until fall (which is going to kill me I know because I will want to wear them now!). I'm using those as the basis for the rest of my fall wardrobe so will definitely need to try things on.

I really like your idea of evaluating your summer items as well and definitely need to do that.

Thanks for sharing!

MPJ - I always find it worthwhile to take good care of my shoes. Basic cleaning you can do yourself with a nice leather cleaner/moisturizer and a polish set. Reheeling and resoling, or putting in new insoles, is obviously a shoe repairperson sort of chore, and they throw in the cleaning (typically) for free. The perfect sandals are so hard to find that I always love being able to bring them forward into next year!

I find that getting rid of too-big clothing is the most marvellous feeling! And it is also an effective way of burning my bridges behind me. I want to have as many barriers between me and getting fat again as possible. Having to buy smaller clothes feels good enough that it overcomes my highly developed cheapness. Having to buy bigger would feel so miserable that it would shock me into taking action.

Which is a long-winded way of saying, yes, get rid of those baggy clothes! The faster the better.

ik - we are of the same mind! I JUST went through my closet and drawers, albeit in the flood of boxes from NAS. (sheepish grin)

I wasn't able to quite finish, so here's where I stand:
- try on the 3 or 4 pieces I haven't worn all summer and keep or ditch

- "Go through all summer clothing, including sandals, and evaluate condition and how often I wore each piece. if I didn't wear it, chuck it." I have actually started to do this, I just realized...ditching some knit tops that I just hated wearing. I haven't evaluated other summer clothes for their condition (like sandals) but I'd like to do that. Is it worth taking sandals to a cobbler for basic cleaning, etc?

- "Pull out my fall items and evaluate if there is anything I really *need* - I did a quality purge before packing, but always good to check again for pit stains, rips, and fit changes!" I did this when I sorted my closet, drawers and under bed containers. The next step for me is to make a list of what I actually have, in what categories. Start to come up with some outfit combos...do I have any orphans?

Thanks for your list, it's helped me solidify my next steps!

Ah, the thought of cool fall days

I like this sort of list to help with closet (and NAS) control. I'm aiming for a cohesive fall/winter closet where everything gets along quite nicely!

The proper purging is always tricky. I know lots of ladies here take pics and ask advice for purging, but that's too labor intensive for me :-\ Just putting on clothes to look at them is reaching my limit.

Don't you wish we could have roaming YLF purging parties where the hostess provided snacks and the YLFers could just sit and help sort their closet "fashion show"? There would even be support right there for bagging up the donations, consignors, etc. and getting them out the door (or at least out of the closet)!

Very nice checklist! I find that the arrival of NAS is the START of my fall planning. Generally I do a good closet purge to see what is already there before I head into Nordstrom (and the rest of the mall for that matter!) I tend to go through the same general steps as you do: Go through summer stuff and evaluate what is working/not working then go through the fall/winter stuff to see what I am interested in working with for the upcoming season. Then I tend to put together a pile for the consignment store, a pile for donation and a pike for the tailor. I managed to get about half of this done on Wednesday and one bag is already off to Value Village!

I have been watching everyone buy fall clothes at the NAS and we have a lot more summer to go here too. Still it's fun to start thinking about it. Since we only have really two seasons for clothing: summer and seasonless (I stole that from Suz and reversed it for my climate). I don't have too many real needs.

It's always easier to find winter clothes than summer clothes in the thrift stores here, since we are summer dominant. So, without really meaning to, I've bought 4 coats/jackets, some sweaters, jeans and long sleeved button down shirts over the summer. Yesterday I spent half the day trying everything on and seeing how well they played together (our electric rates are cheaper on the weekends, so I cranked down the A/C to enhance the mood). I didn't end last season with a ton of winter clothes, but some of my old jeans aren't fitting as well as I'd like and might not make the cut so I've set them aside for now.

Okay, I'm ready for fall! I hope it comes before December this year. :/

great plan IK. We must be on the same wavelength. But I started mine in reverse order. looked over all my previous fall items and either decided to keep, donate or consign.

Very good plan and sounds like sound sense. Also, from my perspective, pretty courageous with all the letting go that is implied.

I'll confess I'm too terrified of what I'll find to try it for myself. Consoling myself that summer is still a long road ahead....October's the earliest I can imagine autumn here, so maybe by September I can actually think about it. (Wait, that's not so far away either, is it? :-/ )

Good list. It's a great idea to start with what we've got before we get ahead to what we want/need!
When I grabbed my summer stuff to take here to FL with me, several items already had a built in expiration in my mind. If I didn't wear them here, they would not come back to CA.
I think this is a great guide.

Your list is inspiring. I need to look at it when it cools down as trying on fall stuff now would be so miserable I'd ditch it all. I'm in Kansas and we are only about half way through summer although I can't wait for fall.

Note this is a CLOSET checklist, not a shopping one - first things first!

- Try on all pants and get rid of half of them, since I lost weight/my body changed and it's time. The ones I keep, wear for a day and if they're not comfortable or fit right, ditch.

- Go through all summer clothing, including sandals, and evaluate condition and how often I wore each piece. if I didn't wear it, chuck it.

Now I have to decide when fall in Austin starts. It isn't August or September, that's for sure!
