For me, I have over 70 followers on my blog now, and I follow many of them in return, plus I have others that I adore and follow on my own. That's a huge chunk of time to keep up with, so going to each page individually isn't practical. I have RSS feeds on my 3 sites but personally I *hate* reading blogs through an RSS feed. I use a mac and use my "top sites" screen to visually remind me to check my favourite sites- I can immediately see when something has been updated. I actually love visiting blogs, the design is part of the experience for me! So it's great to put together a pretty blog, but it's almost more important to make sure people can add you easily to their feeds, and that they can read the whole blog from the feed. I've stopped following many blogs -- Academichics included, whom I adore -- because they set it up to only send the first line of their entry to a feed, and I was required to click on the link to see all the photos and discussion. I don't have time to do that, especially if I am not commenting.
