a number of people i work with have had their cubes converted to standing cubes, which my company is willing to do……but they won't supply a new chair, so if you want to stand all day, you're good, but if you want to alternative standing and sitting, you have to buy your own chair! i'd do it, if i had the stand/sit option, but i'm not going to buy my own chair!

Oh, Irene and Diana -- I completely agree about this. I had a standing retail job in my 20s and it was murder on me. Yet I could (and can) walk for many many miles without issues. I could never stand all day to write. But it's nice to move around.

I'm with Irene. I find that standing still for long periods of time is hell on my joints and feet. I can walk for the same amount of time and feel fine, but if I'm just standing still it's really bad. For that reason I'm interested in walking desks but not standing ones.

I do have both bad feet (flat, no fat pads) and bad posture though!

Do you find that you actually stand still when you work at a standing desk, or do you pace/shift around/walk more too?

I do stand when I'm working at the lab bench, but I'm usually moving around and stuff. If I have to do something really focused for a long period of time, I'll sit on a stool.

I know it's not the same, but I've had an office job in the past, then a 'walking around' job in restaurant/coffee shop, and now I have a part-time (thank God) standing job at the tills of a retail store. I think that's the worst job for me, health-wise. Sitting all day was bad enough, but standing on my feet without moving much? My legs are throbbing by the end of my shift. I'm actually wearing support hose, and I've seen an increase in varicose veins on my already blemished legs. Can't wait to find another job, and that is one of the main reasons why.

I've got an adjustable small desk surface which is on rollers and will go from regular desk height to standing height: http://levenger.com/Sit-to-Sta.....12477.aspx

It's not big enough to be a proper desk for me, but it's nice to switch to it from time to time.

I kinda want a treadmill desk setup but I don't want to spend the thousands of dollars for one...

Love the space and options your desk gives you!

My DH and I both wanted to try standing desk -- but we have very limited space, and budget was tight. We each purchased a computer stand that we use on our regular desktops. For about $52, we have a stand that can double as a lap desk, although we've never used it that way.

Here's what we bought:

http://www.amazon.com/Furinno-.....F8&qi

P.S. I usually have a rule that I have to stand while on YLF. I'm not right now --- but then, I've just painted for 7 hours. Believe me, there is a time to sit and enjoy it!

I don't have a standing desk but I have a sit-to-stand chair and I sometimes create my own standing option. I definitely move the chair up and down. My chair is the Haag Capisco.

I definitely am more energized when I'm on the phone if I'm standing - I can hear it in my voice!

One of my goals is improved posture as I'm experiencing a lot of neck and shoulder pain. It has also helped me completely eliminate some increasingly severe wrist pain in my right wrist due to how my wrist is cocked at an angle to place my hand on the mouse when I am in a seated position. Standing completely eliminates that angle as my elbow is above my wrist in a standing position.

This Varidesk brand is excellent. Super good customer service and it is very easy to set up and to use - moving it up and down regularly all day is a breeze.

I think it sounds like a great idea! My job as a seamstress involves a lot of standing for either cutting out or pressing, so I do alright in that aspect.

I'm intrigued. I am on contract with company who has all of their in-house staff using them now. They all love it. Most have said they've experienced more energy, less lethargy (especially mid-afternoon) and better posture. I am in the market for a new desk for my home office, and considered it.......but not sure yet.

I am standing at my standing desk (by Varidesk) as I take a little YLF break, and I thought to share it here. I got it a couple of weeks ago and have been using it regularly for my at-home-office days. Wondering if others are doing the same, and how you are liking it?

Mostly I really like it. I stand for an hour and sit for 30 minutes, more or less. There is an app with a timer that is supposed to help with that schedule, but I frequently am too busy to notice it. Generally I think about sitting when I get really tired or my lower back starts to ache.

Research is varied with some stating that sitting all day is the poor health equivalent of smoking for our generation. Seems logical that standing more than sitting is good for us.

The app keeps track of additional calories burned by standing. If it is accurate, I appear to be burning 500 additional calories a day, which is a bonus for doing exactly what I would have been doing anyway - working.
