I probably enjoyed the surrounding areas more than the city itself but that said, it is a wonderful city to visit. The ferry over to Bainbridge and eating fish and chips once there was wonderful (many years ago). Then several days in Port Townsend with ferry trips over to Whidbey Island was incredible! Loved PT as a small city. The island towns were active enough to keep us interested.

In the event that you could find a much better deal on airfare...other cities sharing our general locale and climate are Portland, OR, and Vancouver, BC. Portland has, maybe, fewer touristy attractions than Seattle (although still plenty to see and to do) while Vancouver has at least as many. Also, Victoria, BC, is very lovely. We've always taken the car or passenger ferries from Washington to Victoria, but it's accessible from Vancouver via ferry as well. Similar PNW vibe shared between Portland and Seattle...Canada has a very different vibe.

So much good advice. A plan--a very loose one, with plenty of room for improvisation--is starting to form in my head. But now I see that airfare over spring break is nearly twice what it is for presidents' day, and higher still over the summer!

Spring break is on my mind today! I am eager to see what others say about Seattle. I have only visited the National Parks in the Seattle area. The day and a half we spent in town was spent doing touristy things like Alki beach, the Chihuly garden, Space needle, Pike Place etc. Alki beach was very nice for relaxing in warm weather.

I live in Seattle. Spring in Seattle can feel like Winter so I'm warning you - NOT warm.

I think you might want to get an Air BNB in Capitol Hill (my neck of the woods). Very central, very happening, and close to downtown.

I second the Kimpton Hotel Monaco as the place to stay.

Karie--the EMP (Experience Music Project) got renamed as the Museum of Popular Culture (MoPOP). I do not know if it merged with the Sci-Fi museum that was next door. I went when it was the EMP and it was really good!

I was in Seattle for a few days before an Alaskan cruise and we stayed at the Westin. It was right by the monorail and only a few blocks from the Public Market. We walked everywhere. One place that was really cool that your son would probably like is Experience Music.

Now this was almost 10 year ago, but these places are all still there I think.

I live in Seattle, and there are plenty of things to do there without a car. You can take the ferry to Bainbridge Island and walk the several blocks into Winslow. There is public transportation from Winslow to the Bloedel Reserve, a fabulous 150 acre forest/garden. In Seattle, there is also easy public transit to all of the Seattle places that Emily K mentioned and more.

Last year My husband and I visited Seattle:

https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....ve-seattle

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Downtown. It was one of the few trips where we didn't rent a car because the hotel was centrally located:

https://www.crowneplaza.com/ho.....38;srb_u=1

Several years ago we stayed at the Edgewater. Rooms *on* the water are pretty pricy, but we thoroughly enjoyed the view. The hotel is literally next to the water. You are not allowed to fish out the window. Apparently the Beatles stayed there and did that. It wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't carpet...

I live in Seattle, so I'll come back to this with more and better suggestions But, I think your presuppositions are pretty inaccurate :-). There are a lot of coffee shops to sit in but I don't think there's a lot of watching and scoping out other activities from there. Also, the city is really very small (as it is bounded on one side by the Sound and on the other by a huge lake) and, although you'll want a car to facilitate travel, distances are not vast. It's five miles from here to there. Downtown has Pike Place Market (a good place to get coffee and see the sights) and access to our touristy Fisherman's Wharf area. You can take a ferry from the wharf area to nearby islands (but you'd want the car ferry to maximize your opportunities at the island end.) There's Seattle Art Museum within walking distance of Pike Place. Our historic district, Pioneer Square, is walking distance from Pike Place as well. There's a sculpture garden just to the North of Pike Place.

Another fun area is Eastlake and the University District. You can look at the houseboats in Eastlake neighborhood. On the other side of Portage Bay (between Lake Union and Lake Washington) there's a cafe called "Agua Verde" that rents paddle boards and kayaks (I think) But it will be quite chilly during Spring Break! In the same neighborhood is a favorite local park called Gas Works--made from the rusting remains of...an old gas work processing facility. There's a good view of the city/downtown rom Gas Works park.

Another area of interest surrounds the Space Needle--there's a big fountain, a food court, Pacific Science Center museum and Paul Allen's Museum of Popular Culture. The Space Needle is walkable from downtown or there are busses and a tram.

ETA: The Eastlake stuff I mentioned is all kinda close together, but probably not walkable--more for short jaunts by car.

For spring break, half the country and many people from overseas come to where we live. We want a break too, so are looking for a non-Floridian place to go. My son has recently been interested in living in Seattle (he likes rain) so I’m thinking of a couple days there.

We had a busy New York trip a few years ago. Met up with friends in Central Park and Washington Square; they took us to kid-friendly places to eat pizza, ice cream, and Chinese food. Did the night at the Museum of Natural History and a boat tour (a small sailboat that served brunch) around Manhattan, went to the recently-opened Math Museum. Most of those may have been hits, individually, and I think he enjoyed renting City Bikes (his idea) and learning to play chess in Zuccati Park (spontaneously), but overall he was worn out, hated being dragged from place to place. We liked our hotel’s rooftop restaurant, and we had a cool view of the 9-11 memorial being built directly below our window. Going to Disney has not allayed his fear of death by over-scheduled vacationing.

My choice of a place to vacation with him would be Philadelphia, because it apparently has a central city with lots of interesting things to do in a small place, so you can just hang out, sipping your beverage and soaking up the vibes of the city, as he wants to do, and then go investigate something nearby. He says inspiration will eventually strike, and then he/we will want to do something. I think it will come a lot more easily if you can see fun things from where you are sitting.

So my question is: where in Seattle can we have a vacation that’s like my Philly dream, and not like his NYC reality?
I’ve never been there, and have two competing ideas of what it’s like: lots of coffee shops and craft breweries where you can watch the world go by, and a really spread-out kind of place where what you’ll see if you don’t know where you’re going are miles and miles of roads. Either way, it would help to have the right jumping-off place and an idea of what things there are to jump off to.

We will also need a place to stay, of course. He likes high modernism, hot tubs, and relaxation. I don’t want him spending hours in the room—that misses the point of travel—but if it has both an outdoor cafe for him to hang out and some kind of classes—yoga, oenology, cooking, whatever—for me, that’s perfect.

Where in Seattle do you recommend we go?
