Thanks all!

Jenni, it’s definitely a blue based top. Hard to tell in photos. I’d much prefer it to be black :)

Angie and Bijou, no 5 is my fave. Ms B never gets jealous. She is the sweetest dog we’ve ever had. She tries to befriend neighbourhood cats and rabbits. She mounts some very long charm offensives (which occasionally pay dividends). She once succeeded in befriending a wild cockatoo.

Slim cat, high five! I’d love that top in green too.

Kkards, you could give it a try with stripes and/or plaid (if you wanted to of course). I think you could do it.

My faves are 2 and 4. It’s pretty subtle in 1 and I wouldn’t even count it!!
I enjoy doing it in theory but don’t think I do it that much in practice. With a bag, occasionally eg for Art Deco dress-up.
I am not convinced that the top in 4 is blue-toned? Looks more bronze to me, but maybe up by the shoulders is blue.
Anyway you are the Queen of it now and look awesome!

I love pattern mixing too! It really stretches my wardrobe and prevents outfit boredom. Keeps those oldies fresh, just as you mentioned.

I enjoy a very subtle pattern mix from time to time for myself when I stick to classic patterns and similar color palettes. I really like your combinations. The two dark florals in the first outfit do go together imo and amplify each-other even. I don't know if I like 2 or 4 best, they just click in a very organic way.

I did more pattern mixing before than I do now, usually involving my peacock bag. Eventually I'll go back to it, but wanting a much more minimal style now.

Thanks Lyn. I still love the tee too. The puppy is not mine I have a hankering for a small (lap) dog but my husband likes big dogs. (I like them all, he he!) I just borrowed this little guy for a while. He is adorable.

Diana, thanks. That’s the way I feel. I enjoy the experimentation. And boots with bare legs are the best.

Thanks Synne. I generally prefer the patterns to be in the same palette, but I am trying out some contrast versions too. That’s harder for me because it involves colour mixing on top of pattern mixing, and starts to feel hectic. But I’m giving it a go.

KG, thanks. You need some FFPMOs (Fast Fallback Pattern Mix Outfits) :)

I can't pick a favorite among 2, 3 and 4! Excellent pattern mixing, and great outfits! I also like pattern mixing, but like it best when it has some subtle coherence, like a colour that is repeated. A total print clash, mish mash can be fun, but it often looks too "loud" for me.

Since Spring I’ve been challenging myself to wear more pattern mixes. I am trying to be more creative with older items. I like pattern and have quite a bit of it in my wardrobe.

I’ve been doing it at least 3 times a week. I’ve had some hits. Some misses. And lots in between.

Sharing a few here:

No 1 (Spring): I love floral and have lots of floral items. I regularly try pattern mixing floral with floral but I think it’s quite tricky. I felt this version worked because the floral pattern of the sweater looked like a less busy version of the floral pattern of the bag. A bit matchy matchy but not quite. The sweater is around 6 or 7 years old.

No 2 (Spring): Much easier to pair floral with stripes. Both the skirt and the top are around 4 years old. I was amazed I hadn’t tried this combination before.

No 3 (Spring): I used to be very into black and white pattern mixes. Now I’m into softer, earthier pattern mixes. I wore this on a trip to Canberra. It was very warm during the day, but cooled considerably at night. The metallic scarf (which I wore as a stole) is a Missoni my husband gave me about 7 or 8 years ago. Bonus pattern mix with bathroom :)

No 4 (Summer): I bought the t-shirt in NYC in 2018 after going wild over the Byzantine exhibits at the MMA. I thought the pattern was very Byzantine. But it is probably more boho. The tee is blue based and I usually wear it with jeans. The skirt black based. I usually don’t like combining dark blue and black (I know many do) but there was enough commonality in the colour scheme and contrast to make me like the mix here.

No 5 (Summer): checks, stripes and dogs, the perfect pattern mix.

I think my eye has adjusted to pattern mixing and my tolerance for it is increasing.

How do you feel about pattern mixing?
