I appreciate all the helpful feedback. I wish I had time to thank you each individually but my DS just received two college acceptances and wants my attention so we can read through the packets.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions Inge! As my father says, "there's a lot of food for thought!" To answer your question about flare leg length is one of the problems because of my 5'9" height. The second is the width and placement of the flare. I have muscular legs but my frame is small. When the flare is too wide, my proportions start to look skewed in an unflattering way.

Angie, thanks for giving your opinion. I really like the grey and white Amor Vert top with banded bottom. I'm going to see if out local AT has the fuschia top. I really love that color and am trying to add pieces to my wardrobe for each season.

I'm looking forward to trying some of these options! I will post pictures once I have something to show.

I love your choices and I agree with Viva about the Topshop shell. The front detail does not seem to drape well to me.
My favorites are the Karen Kane top and the fuscia overlay dress but I love the rest too and the suggestions that you received.
I think you have your style down to pat and I am curious to see what you end up adding.

Of your ideas, I love the palm print dress the most, Staysfit. I am intrigued by the Topshop shell but would really need to see it in person to understand that gather: does it work, or does it feel/look like a mistake, like a piece of material is caught up in a stitch somewhere? It's hard to know.

I'm also really intrigued by some of the pieces Inge posted for you, particularly those that feature spring tweeds and fringe-y tweeds. That feels like a really interesting way to get texture into your look, and some of those sherberty colors are really lovely and would be beautiful on you.

I'm enjoying and learning from this post. Thank you!

And some more :-)

Also: Are you having trouble finding flared jeans because of the length? Then I can highly recommend the KUT Chrissy flares. I'm 5'9" and will need to have them hemmed slightly to wear with flats (this almost never happens to me). The Love Story jeans are also a good length, but have a lower rise.

Lots of great ideas for adding texture (I'm adding some more below).
I absolutely agree that you should try the palm print dress, Staysfit, it's gorgeous, and the colour will look fantastic on you.

I also think that "controlled" ruffles (i.e. nothing too baroque) could work for you.

More ways to add texture:
- peplum
- wrap front tops
- pleats
- ruching
- smocked details
- embroidery
- pintucks
- interesting sleeve detailing and/or a structural short sleeve
- two-toned items (including pieces like the See by Chloé cropped jeans in your Finds in this post)
- bib or tuxedo detailing
- flutter sleeve
- "jagged" hemlines
- asymmetry
- metallics
- sparkle
- scalloped trims
- Summer tweed
- fringe
- pussy bow or tie-neck blouse
- buttons (e.g. on shoulder)
- zippers
- self-patterned fabrics
- sheer detailing
- two-in-one top (mixed media or not)
- ribbed neckline, cuffs and hem

I'm adding some examples below. Hm, when collecting from J.Crew I can't seem to pull up items shown on models (do go have a look because the clothes look much better on a person:-)

There are only 2 pieces I would avoid for your wardrobe(and myself, too:-)), the Karen Kane Emboidered Lace top, and the Camuto asymmetric hem pink dress. Otherwise think all will (or can) do a great job for your style. There is the slub texture which you can also consider. I love it for lighter pieces and consider fulfilling the same function as bouclé for winter. Oh, and there are so many mix-media things nowadays to choose from (which would also add interest even if all flat, and plain).

Staysfit, I like the direction you are going with this. You have defined and refined your wardrobe needs to a very high level when you can start to think about elements like textural contrast. I do think it is a great idea to add some to the summer outfits because texture can create interest without disturbing the "calm" that you also want to project.

I'm not sure about ruffles for you. Large ones would be too twee and probably too fussy for your work life, but smaller crisp ones more like pleats would be fine. And I like the tops you've chosen. They look as if they are worth trying.

I see what you mean about dresses; quite often the summer versions tend to be beachy-casual or a bit too corporate for your needs/ wants. I really love the palm print dress for you, though -- definitely give it a bash! Gorgeous colour!

Gradfashionista, thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely consider the DVF. There's another DVF sheath I am currently looking at but I think it may be too short. I need a minimum 37-37.5 inches length for a dress to be long enough.

KL, thanks, I hope that one works out. I like the way it looks in a photograph, but you never know once you see it in person. It's a bit of a gamble if you order online.

Not Angie, but I thought of these dresses as garments that combine textures and might be work appropriate.

Eyelets might have greater longevity than ruffles, although admittedly, I'm not the biggest ruffle fan. DVF just came out with a beautiful cotton eyelet dress that's wonderfully textured. The price point is high for me, but may not be for you.

April, thanks for the suggestion. AG has worked well for me because of the long inseam length and these look perfect! In terms of price, I would hope to keep it under $200, and under $150 if possible.

Joy, I didn't think of shine or pleats. I have a couple linen tees. I have to agree that they add some texture! I'm happy realizing that there may be more texture in my wardrobe than I originally thought. You may be right about the pink dresses. I should try on the maxi and post a pic. I think it can look different depending on how its accessorized.

Gigi, I will take a look at the Gap online. They closed our local store. I love the idea of multimedia tops. Leather is something that didn't occur to me at all! Great idea! I could look at interesting leather purses. They could add both texture and color. It's an idea that is very appealing because I can take some risks without making drastic changes in my look.

Good insights!

For adding texture, I came up with some other ways too: leather, cowl necks (texture from the draping), and multimedia tops. I like all your ideas, especially the chiffon layering idea and the lace tops.

I think that Gap is having more and more styles of flares and cropped pants, so you could check there.

I completed a careful wardrobe assessment. Even though I have plenty of clothing, I want to add some pieces to keep things current and fresh. I wanted to share my thoughts and get your feedback:

1. Texture: My garments lack texture. I mostly have flat weave blouses and knits. I can create some texture by layering. How can I add softly textured textiles to my wardrobe and maintain the integrity of my style? My first thought was perhaps some eyelet, or lace? Ribbed material? Ruffles? (Are ruffles too twee, feminine or romantic for me?) Translucent chiffon layered over something else? Textured items need to be fairly monochromatic or they will become too busy and distracting for my taste and style.

2. Dresses: I want to add some "work appropriate" dresses to my wardrobe. I wear dresses 2-3 days per week in the spring/summer. The difficulty is defining "work appropriate". I would not say that typical business appropriate is the definition I use. My definition has included both more casual and more formal attire. I'm thinking some pattern as well as color would be nice. Texture would be an added bonus.

3. Jeans update: 1. High rise, straight leg, cropped jeans - An Angie suggestion; high rise version being my favorite at the moment. 2. Some boot/flare leg jeans - there must be a pair for me somewhere!

4. Shoes: Confession, I don't need any shoes. I just want some! I thought it would be nice to look for something colorful.

Below are some items I have found that may fulfill my requirements. What do you think? ( I know there are a lot of white tops, but I couldn't find texture in colors that were in my wardrobe, only the neutrals, except the two pink dresses).
