Antje, I was a teen here in the U.S. in the late 80s and early 90s, and I remember people wearing scarves (actually, various colors of bandanas) tied like that, but I don't remember dying cloth diapers!!

I can't tell from the picture how it's tied. Now, I'm a bit older than you Antje, I was a teenager in the 70's. l. . we wore little square scarves tied around the neck, like a kerchief or rolled and tied in a square knot. I was looking at my highschool yearbook a few weeks ago and was laughing hysterically!!! Of course, being the style maven that I am (lol) I had scarves in just about every color!!!!!! But I don't recall anyone doing the diaper thing!!! Veeeery Interesting!!!

I have to elaborate on my comment about the "style" the scarf is worn in the middle image, because I'm still between laughing and cringing. So when I was a young teen (in the early 80s), we actually bought cloth diapers (!) and died them purple, pink, whatever, using our moms' stock pots. We then tied them around our necks like the girl in the middle image. We felt very fab, hee hee. So my question is - was this a German thing, or did you do this here in the US, too???

Very cute. I think the pictures on that page show two good ways to wear it: both the left and right images are great. I would NOT wear it the way shown in the middle image. I wore cheap scarves like that when I was a teenager, which was a veeery long time ago. It does not look stylish on grown-ups in my opinion.

Now the question is. . . .how should I wear it? Can anyone show me some ways to wear it (and what kinds of tops would this look best with?) Thanks for all your help ladies. . . . .I LOVE THIS WEBSITE!!!!

You wear neckerchiefs very well, Antje. This is where the waters get muddy and I sound like I am contradicting myself, but I’ll try to explain.

Antje has a very funky style. Playful, put together and streamlined, but extremely funky with specs that she changes daily, lots of bright colours, interesting layers, arty farty earrings and always fab shoes. So, her very contemporary style kicks her modern neckerchief up a notch. Scarves are definitely part of Antje's style. Does that make sense?

I’m not implying that you’re frumpy Jennell! Please don’t get me wrong. I’m merely suggesting that a neckerchief can look flight-attendant-like and mature if the rest of the ensemble is modernly classic. Hope that I don’t sound too obtuse.

Antje, when you said "conversative" I thought you meant neckerchiefs that would be conversation starters, like ones with little horses all over them, or golfers or some goofy print like that. Ha ha!

Jennell, totally valid question, and I should have been better prepared for answering it I tried to find some examples online, but it turns out to be quite hard. Most stores (e.g. Nordstrom) don't feature many scarves online; it's probably not worth the cost of photography. So I can't really point you to real examples from stores where I've bought neckerchiefs (several of them come from Nordy's, and then many from various original locations that I got at consignment stores.)

One link I found is about different ways of tying scarves. Personally, I use the "Double" and the "Neck square knot" styles featured on this site for my little neckerchiefs.

In terms of contemporary, it's a matter of color and pattern/print. E.g., a current color like in this lime green scarf would be modern: http://stylepath.com/details/9.....-lime-zest. On the other hand, a bordeaux and navy blue neckerchief in a striped pattern would be more conversative). Does that help?

I'd encourage you to just try it out and see how you like it on you. For me, neckerchiefs (and other scarves) are an essential style element; they totally add zip to my outfits. But I've also passed up on some scarves and scarf/top combinations because I worried about looking like a light attendant So some careful picking and choosing is needed for sure.

Hmm. I wear neckerchiefs quite frequently (without having a long neck) and I love them. They add color, and they definitely add "pep", partially because it's not such a common look. I'd say it depends on the colors and patterns; make sure they are contemporary and not conversative.

I like neckerchiefs with simple v-neck sweaters and tops, but especially with the layered look of shirt and sleeveless top over it.

I find small rectangular scarves much harder to wear than neckerchiefs. Bigger rectangular scarves are awesome. I love the yellow crinkly one on Espritshop.com (unfortunately they don't have direct links to items).

They sort of are, Jennell. Neckerchiefs aren’t taboo, but definitely not a contemporary look. People with long necks look good in neckerchiefs. Vertical scarves tend to work well on all body types.

If they have them at your store, you might keep an eye on them and wait until they go on sale. I really want to get a bright green one they have, so I'm checking in every few days to see when they go on sale (my husband works right in the same shopping area, so it's not out of my way). The salesperson who always helps me said they have had them for a long time, so they may go on sale soon.

Ana, ideally I would like to not spend over $30 for one, since I would like to get a couple of them. But I would be willing to spend more on one if I really liked it and
then I could get the rest from places like H&M. I actually already got a very light purple one from H&M that has no fringe and is made od very soft thin ( knit) rayon, but alas thay had no other color.
Is the JCrew one on the site?

How much are you looking to spend, Tanya? I just got a coral colored silk/cashmere scarf at J. Crew. It's very light weight, and it's wide enough to use as a shawl, but light enough to wear like a scarf also, and they come in different colors. They are $68.00. I was dubious about the price at first, because that seems like a lot to spend on just a scarf, but I wear it with lots of different things (it's my go to accessory when it's chilly outside), and it's SO soft (not at all itchy) and I can wear it again when the weather turns cool in the fall.

I have that Ann Taylor LOFT scarf in yellow. I was $20.00 away from getting $20.00 off my purchase, so I basically got it for free, and I haven't worn it nearly as much as the J. Crew one. It's not soft, kind of itchy and stiff, and so it doesn't hang very nicely. I love the color though. I might buy a yellow one from J. Crew and toss the ATL one (or give it away).

Hi Angie,
My style is not boho at all, quite the opposite, i.e. pretty polished in general. I just used that picture as an ilustration, I am basically looking for solid colored (cream. melon, turqoise), simple scarves in thin materials; sort of like thinner pashmina made from silk/cotton. I would be wearing in a smart casual way, mostly with jeans and knit tops.

The look of this particular scarf is a little boho. Is that your style, Tanya?

You should keep a Spring scarf on, but taking it off is quite fine. Spring scarves come in all sorts and therefore work with all tops. It depends entirely on the scarf and top.

I like this new trend of spring scarves a lot and am planning on picking a few for this season, such as this one ( in white):
http://www.anntaylorloft.com/c.....ory=Misses

I have a few questions tough: are you supposed to remove them when you get 'inside' ( as you would do with winter wool ones) or can you keep them on?
Do they work only with fairly simple tops such as flat knits and plain button-downs or can you wear them with more detailed tops as well?
Thanks!
