Angie, I tried the made-in-UK Docs a few years ago, and while I agree the leather is much nicer, they felt like they ran a bit narrower, even, than standard Asian-made ones. The real problem, though, is that in all Docs the stiffener goes all the way to the middle of the shoe (it ends right at the arch, and then sort of curves up along the base of the shoe's tongue, if that makes sense). I can usually deal with a stiffener if it's just in the toes, but not the entire front half of the shoe (and honestly I try to avoid shoes with stiffeners as mush as possible). Even once the leather breaks in, that stiffener remains too tight on my instep, which I guess is higher than average.

I'll try to get some WIW's with the new jeans and the new Uniqlo sweater too!

The UK-made Docs tend to be more comfy.

I love the look of the Doc Martens. Very sad that they are not comfy. Good news about the Uniqlo BF jeans. When I am in Toronto I will try them on.

and waiting for items that fit perfectly. Pity about both those lilac shoes.

That’s too bad about the docs. They look nice but they sound very stiff, right and uncomfortable. Not worth it!

I hope you’re able to find another cute pair of lilac shoes. Really neat colour!

Hahah, Rachylou, I never try things on at Uniqlo because the closest one is 3 hours away. I order online and try at home; I actually managed to be organized this time and got my order right before I went down to Boston for a weekend, so I returned my rejects in-store and saved myself a shipping charge.

One other thing -- the lilac Docs came today (super fast for Nordies!) and now I remember why I gave up on Docs. The instep is so, so tight, even before I lace them up! The stitching at the base of the tongue and the stiffener for the forefoot are absolutely a no-go for me. They are very, very pretty. But if I'm going to buy a super-casual shoe right now it has to be 100% all-day comfortable.

Great loot! Good to know about Uniqlo pants. I always eye them but never try... I find the Uniqlo dressing room a bit of an ordeal for some reason. This encourages me to try.

Quick update on my warm-weather trying/buying:

Uniqlo:
I ordered a pair of the boyfriend jeans from Uniqlo and, holy cow, they are SO comfortable! I ordered a 25 (probably my "true" size these days?) and they are not tight anywhere, but the waist fits perfectly and stays put without any gapping. They don't taper much at the hem and are loose right down to my ankles, no calf-grabbing at all. If you are a pear or hourglass looking for truly slouchy jeans, these are worth considering. I could probably size down to a 24 for a more fitted "girlfriend" look. I already picked up a second pair in the dark wash. I'm literally wearing them instead of sweatpants at home, they are that comfortable...

I also tried the IDLF linen skirt. The length was perfect and I like the red micro-check pattern, but the fabric was so thin! (And not lined.) I have other linen-cotton blends from Uniqlo (shorts and pants, plus several shirts for my husband), which are all nice and thick, so I was really disappointed in the fabric quality of this piece. I returned it.

I did end up with one wildcard piece -- one of the 3D-Knit sweaters (mine is pale grey, but only the periwinkle was available for me to Find). It isn't eye-catching on its own, but when you put it one you realize how well-designed it is. Beautiful drape, perfect length and proportions for wearing with wide leg pants, full skirts, or even layered over dresses. They have a sleeveless dress version now that I'm totally intrigued by.

Madewell:

The Madewell cami and socks both went back. The socks, because they were primarily modal despite being described online as a “cotton blend” -- oh well. The cami, because it was SUPER SHORT. I am not particularly tall, and it hit perhaps an inch below my navel. I would have had to shorten the straps significantly, meaning that in the end it probably would have been a belly shirt on me, and too short to wear with all but the highest-waisted pants. Ah well. I also tried on the Madewell Palisade skirt in rust at my local J Crew the other day (they're stocking Madewell items now -- who knew?!) but I wasn't quite sold on it. Again, the material felt kind of flimsy, and like it will need to be steamed/ironed all the time...

Footwear:

I tried the Poppy Barley lilac oxfords, but the fit was not quite right for me -- loose heel, narrow toe box. Like pants, I often find shoes are cut too “straight” if that makes sense. I have a pair of lilac Doc Marten boots on the way which might be just the thing to satisfy my pastel footwear craving this time of year. In all honesty, I don’t need more fair-weather footwear. What I need is stuff that can stand up to several inches of snow and mud without looking/feeling like a winter boot -- tall order! After striking out on those Naturalizer Motley sneakers, I still have my eye out for a cool pair of sneakers. Not a necessity, but always on my mind. I've seen some nice seafoam/mint footwear (like the Adidas below) that I find very tempting.

And I am still on the lookout for a midi skirt. I'm even contemplating springing for the Hackwith Painter Skirt and hemming it a few inches if need be, but it is so far outside of my normal price range... The Elizabeth Suzann Billow Skirt is also super tempting to me, and probably a better length, but again, $$$. I have yet to place my Not Perfect Linen order (still haven't taken my curtain measurements!) so a linen skirt from them might be my best non-budget-destroying option.

Updates:

1. I ordered the Naturalizer Motley sneakers, but returned them -- too narrow in the toe box (they are fairly pointed, which doesn’t show in the stock photos). They were also cut at that very awkward height that digs into the front of your ankles when you walk -- not quite a true hi-top. I was surprised to find they have a bit of heel lift, too. Seems to be an air cushion in the heel, which I found a bit too squishy for my preferences. If all Naturalizer sneakers have that same sort of footbed, they’re probably not for me (but I might order one of their low cut sneakers, which come in wide sizes, just to see if I can figure out my sizing, because I like the overall shape and many of the colour options, and the lack of obvious branding). And of course, this has sent me down my annual late-winter rabbit hole of browsing ALL THE FASHION SNEAKERS.

2. I ordered the Madewell windowpane socks and silk floral cami. The cami is still backordered but supposed to ship soon; the socks arrived recently but I might return them. They were described as a cotton blend on the website, but they’re actually modal/poly/spandex, without a trace of cotton. Cotton socks are already a hard sell for me (I wear merino and silk year round), but I'm really not a fan of how modal feels, and it tends to be not so durable, so that’s sort of a deal-breaker for me.

3. I placed a pretty large Uniqlo order (stuff for DS and DH too), which includes a pair of high-waisted boyfriend jeans and a linen midi skirt from the new IDLF collection. The skirt is something of a trial run -- I love the idea of full midis, circle skirts, etc, but haven’t worn them much, so I’m hesitant to dump a lot of money into this style.

4. I will also order a linen tank top from Not Perfect soon (probably the windowpane one, though I’m also dreaming of one in navy), but I also want to order curtains from them and haven’t gotten around to taking measurements for those. :)

5. My current obsession is this pair of lilac oxfords. Maybe they're a better addition than fashion sneakers? They look so comfortable. The colour is out of left field for me, which is of course why I like them.

Rachy -- I like the idea of adding more mustard for summer. It''s right up there with cinnamon/terra-cotta. Apparently I like "spice" related colours in warmer weather... I'd wear it with the hi-tops too!

Angie -- Your observation is spot-on! My summer wardrobe is a bit more femme than my cold-weather one. Comes of not liking most shorts, so I end up in skirts/dresses instead. I tend to think of my summer "base" wardrobe as denim cut-offs (2 pairs), linen pants (2 pairs), graphic tees and breton tops (lots, but fewer than previous years), and solid colour fitted tank tops. I also wear my oxford and chambray shirts a lot in the summer. Toppers are all very tomboy too: field jackets (2), denim jacket, linen blazer. So my warm weather goal usually involves adding a few feminine pieces to offset the tomboy base. Last year, I did a full overhaul of my summer dress capsule and ended up with three beautiful and completely different summer dresses. This year I want to focus on separates.

Jenn -- you are right, and I think it might be that Woodsy Audrey only works when it's cold out. I live smack dab between several beautiful ponds and swim/paddle/beach-picnic a lot, so my summer look is decidedly beachy -- but it's not ocean-beachy, it's woodsy-beachy. That's a hard one to pin down. Now that I've been back in New England for two years, I'm pretty over the full-on nautical vibe for summer, but I also don't want to go too far into earth-tone/boho territory. Garçonne Sportive maybe gives me more latitude and carries through all the seasons? Mostly, I just dress according to my own interpretation of Kibbe's Gamine guidelines -- that seems to work better for me than a moniker.

Fun items, La Ped. That '90s throwback ditsy floral seems dead right for you. Seeing you in a '90s ditsy dress with chunky shoes and boyish jacket too.

I like the cami, the windowpane tank, and the swishy skirt for you. I'm less sure about the high tops. They seem neither woodsy nor Audrey. :)

I can't comment on the slip-on sneaks, as I have an inexplicable poison eye for that style, and can't judge them objectively.

Jenni, it is an expensive cami, that's my hesitation, too. Although I guess fairly comparable to other silk tops (I just don't wear a lot of silk because it's a pain to launder). The nice thing about Madewell: they have "Insider" membership for free (probably US only?), which means free shipping both ways plus a gift card on your birthday. I still have $12.50 left over on the gift card they gave me last year. It's very clever of them -- I wouldn't pay half as much attention if it weren't for the "free money"...

Emily -- Yes, I really like a lot of the HDH stuff. I read Seasons + Salt, Grechen's Closet, Style Bee, and that sort of minimalist aesthetic that those bloggers do is on my mind -- especially for summer, when I don't have to deal with coats and boots. I really need to find an acceptable budget version, or else pair my list down a bit more.

I checked the price in US$, although they were very eager to tell me they ship to NZ and get me to sign up ( no). It's quite a lot of money for a cami I guess but then looking back I paid $98 for a particular purple cami that was perfect under a certain dress in 2013 and I'm still wearing it ( hung it on the rack after washing an hour ago, has worn like iron). So worth it for true love?!
Interesting you think it has a SoCal vibe. That's the part of the US that had a big influence on me growing up, after the GIs came to NZ in WW2 then by the 70s we had all that music, Beach Boys, etc.
I loved the song "It Never Rains in Southern California" as well, whoever sang that

I'm late to this, but I really like the windowpane tank. And I've got lots of Hackwith items on my want-list (none in my wardrobe, though)--I'm quite drawn to some of their pant styles.

Okay, back to add links and Finds, while I'm at the library with DS. ;)

The cami and socks are both Madewell -- their S/S releases always draw me in more than their F/W. It's that dusty/vintage So Cal vibe... if only I'd been with it enough to embrace this look while I actually lived in the Southwest.

The windowpane tank, linen skirt, and swatches are all from an Eastern European company called Not Perfect linen (they sell on Etsy). I have curtains, washcloths, and a pinafore from them, and the quality is really wonderful for the price. Thicker and more drape-y than what you find at Eileen Fisher/Garnet Hill/etc -- and the colours!! Pretty much my dream palette. Oh, and they'll do custom lengths on the skirt...

I am so, so tempted by the Hackwith skirt, but it is 33" long in an XS, which is definitely a bit more than midi on me, but not quite maxi. It might be okay, but I might also be tempted to shorten, and if you shorten you lose some of the fullness -- smaller circumference. It seems like too much of a crapshoot for a big-ticket item. Sigh.

I ordered the colour-block Naturalizers to try on. I was obsessed with the rose-gold slip-ons, right up until I saw the colour-block. They would be so perfect. Anyway, fingers crossed they are comfortable. I'm picky about sneakers...

Here in the Western U.S. we have gone straight from fall to spring. Temps are in the upper 50s (15 C) this week. So I don't have the winter blues, and am hoping for 6 more weeks of winter based on the Groundhog theory. I still wan to wear the heck out of my boots, navies and burgundies. But I should think a bit about what will transition with those colors.

I love the color block high tops and am looking forward to a fit review. The cami is gorgeous and you should check it out in person - so many colors it would go with.

I’m liking the overall color scheme and window pane items. Good shoes. I think it may be worth pursuing the floral tank you’re interested in.

Love windowpane!

Who makes the color blocked hi- tops? Those are just my colors!
I also need to focus. I could get spring items but first I should go through EVERYTHING and find wardrobe holes as per my style goals, and it’s been so chilly.
This might be the year I get a real head start on each next season, though. Such as literally hanging together “ upcoming “ outfits or capsules.

Those look like great choices for you!

I always love windowpane prints but have come to realize they rarely work well on a really busty figure like mine — the lines go all wonky. I’ve learned to appreciate them on others!

As much as I love boots, I am ready for a bit of variety in my footwear. Alas, my feet run icy cold, so most shoes are out of the question for a while longer because they show my socks and I just don't feel like trying to match the socks to the outfits.

I like your choices, especially the sneakers. I'm wanting to add another pair of high-tops to my repertoire, but it's going to have to wait because I'm not even sure what color high-tops I want to add and am suffering from decision fatigue from building our house LOL

Some classy pics here; very well chosen. I also am attracted to window pane print, for some reason it just draws my eye. Maybe it could function like a stripy top, in that it could be used as a neutral in outfits?
The hi top sneaks are very cool. The terra-cotta skirt is a new classic I believe. Where did you get that picture of fabric swatches? Is it your personal favorite colours?
Thanks for sharing your ideas.

I love your linen items in particular; the terra cotta color is beautiful. Please post Finds when you can.

I understand your longing for spring items. At this time of the year, I, too, look forward to wearing lighter and more colourful clothes and shoes in spring.

What an unusually chic sneaker! (#1)

Nice socks and tops! (#3 and 4) I share your fascination for window panes--they look so clean and fresh, in particular when white is one of the colours. However, like you, I have none so far, but now you have inspired me to keep looking for them. I have since long had a dream of a windowpane shirt & skirt that can be worn as a dress and also as a casual suit (in addition to many styling options for each part). Some day my dream may come true ...

I know the feeling (our winter is not so cold but rather wet and grey)....

Window pane is really a useful pattern to have especially if you have black or white separates.

I like the shoes too - I tend to add about 3-4 pairs of shoes a year (outside sports shoes) which - occasionally only 2. I'd like to keep it tighter than that but between wear and tear, different needs and evolving tastes I have not been able to do so. I imagine sneakers would be a three season shoe for you (not mid winter) so on that basis they would get lots of wear but if you need the budget for another wardrobe hole?

I love the skirts too and imagine them working well with neutral and striped tops.
