I think a lightweight quilted jacket would be nice. Here's one:

Thanks all! I'm off to check out Ibex and Stella Caraski!

Kkards, I think I would like one that works for both. I would wear it to work and also on weekends.

Angie, I totally love your coats, hmm maybe I need to try some trenches again.

My peacoats and trenches - of which I have multiple - are perfect for Spring. It can be cold in March so I absolutely need a wool coat - but in fun brights. This is what I wear in late Feb, March and April.

I am VERY consistent with the colours I like. *smiling*

I just bought this Stella Caraski coat. It's in black or dark green and is made of boiled wool. I got the green which is not a spring color but I like it and it's a little funky and arty. I like Joy's idea of wearing a hoody underneath for colder days.

Ibex makes some really nice non-sporty wool jackets and cardigans. Boiled wool, boucle, wool jacquards, etc. You might also check LL Bean -- they used to have a nice boiled wool button front jacket at a reasonable price -- and often on sale in a handful of colors. Also, what about Pendleton or Woolrich?

For those in between times I like leather/pleather. It is usually windy and leather cuts the wind. If a bit of extra warmth is needed, a soft hoody can be worn under the coat. A leather coat like a moto style can be worn casually or with a dressier outfit. For rain and casual times, I have a utility coat from REI that is a light weight layer.

RobinF...are you looking for a truely casual coat or coat that works for casaul but also would work for slightly dressier outfits as well?

I have struggled for years with finding the right coat for in-between seasons, so I figured I'd ask the experts! I want something warm but not too warm, maybe a soft fabric like boiled wool or a thick fleece? I'm not really a fan of trench coats, they don't look good on me. Maybe something a little funky or arty? And I'd like a hood but that isn't a strict requirement. I'm not thinking gear-type, I have a fleece jacket I wear for working out, but I do tend to be a somewhat casual dresser.

What do you all wear for spring/fall? I've done the usual searches on google but are there some unusual places I should try?
