Thanks, all!

Everything I've chosen will also go with things I already have, that was pretty much the point. I don't have a lot of shoes at all, and the only bottoms I have are really versatile ones. I didn't know how to dress nicely until a few years ago, so I still habitually wear jeans + sneakers + whatever top I feel like and walk out the door, so everything I already own is suited to that.

You've gotten some terrific feedback! Like others, I too am really admiring all of the thought you've put into this. It's tricky to shop online for these things, but I find that if nothing else it really helps me to clarify my thoughts by seeing what's available.

Laura made a point about Modcloth quality varying a lot. I think that is true, BUT it's not because they have poor quality control. It is because Modcloth sources and stocks items from a LOT of different makers in addition to their own line. The majority of items are not from their own line, and they try to have options at all price points (shoes from $30-$300). So consider what the price point is and who the maker is, and there is absolutely quality to be found. Good luck!

I love the pieces you've chosen Kaelyn.

I would just echo the advice of others, and that is to limit your silhouette if you are basically starting from scratch. It's so easy to purchase random pieces, which are virtually orphans. And then you end up frustrated, or needing a huge wardrobe to get them to work.

The Vivienne files has great stuff on wardrobe building.

You've done some great planning, and made good choices of items to try. I have a few of the items on your list. I've loved my new olive cargo pants, which are an affordable pair by Lee that I purchased at Kohls. They've laundered well and are a great, flattering fit. I'm on the hunt for a replacement for my white bootcut jeans -- which I wore 4 seasons for 3 years. Since I like high contrast, I love wearing them to brighten up winter neutrals.

I do use capsules, although I regularly borrow from outside the capsule when it makes sense to do so. Right now, I'm transitioning from Holiday to Deep Winter, and I'm resisting it! This capsule usually involves a couple of of purchases, since I need a bit of a "pick me up" to keep fresh through the coldest months.

I've never tried to shop for a capsule, particularly online. I usually start with my existing closet. Perhaps you could start with footwear and bottoms, and begin building with tops and toppers you already own? Starting with black and olive trousers, and a pair of jeans already in your closet would be great. Add in a two jackets and/or cardis in neutrals, one color, and 2 pairs of footwear (perhaps the brown booties). I think the tops are easiest to switch in and out, and I think you might end up with items that are uniquely suited to your bottoms and jackets if you begin that way.

For me, capsules are formed and created in my closet and on my body first -- I lack the skill at imagining how an item seen in 2D pics will look on my decidedly 3D body!

JAileen, the white and black pants i want aren't available yet, but I'd go ahead and get the olive ones. I agree about olive being a versatile color. I think of it as another neutral.

Laura, I've actually never had a bad experience with Torrid. Ever. The only time I've had issues was with jeans ripping when I was a teenager and really rough on them (and I think the quality has gone up since then). But even that was after quite a few wears, so I really couldn't complain. I can't speak for Modcloth because I've admired their selection for a long time but have never actually bought anything before now. And I do have one pair of white sandals, but would eventually like a black pair to replace a pair I wore out about 3.5 years ago. I'm picky about them so I'm not even bothering to list another pair on here. The right pair will come to me eventually, I'm sure. I can be patient. Sometimes.

Great picks. You probably know this already, but I have found both Modcloth and Torrid to be the kind of place where quality varies wildly. Some things are great and some things are horrible and you can't really tell until you order them and see. So you might end up with some returns and have to look for backups.

Do you have sandals already? I'd add them to the list if it's warm enough to wear them in your area by late spring.

I love some of the tops, especially the striped ones. For versatility I would get the solid color pants first - white, black and olive. I find olive to be very versatile. I love the look of white pants, but I'm always leery of getting them dirty and looking dirty all day.

The last time I ordered red pants on line, I received magenta ones, so I'll be waiting for the perfect pair in-store. In the meantime, I do have a red pair of shorts I will wear with most of these tops. Thanks for letting me know how great that tunic from Modcloth is! I think that recommendation about seals it.

I have the "Simplicity on a Saturday" tunic from ModCloth in black and it is one of my warm weather workhorse tops. I will get it in more colors for the spring. ModCloth is one of the stores that I buy at full price, anything that I like doesn't stick around to go on sale. For Torrid, I always buy on sale.

My first pick of looks is the blue moto, white top and floral pants. You have a lot here that mixes and matches. I might also throw in a pair of red pants, they would look great with your white/black&white tops. I'm surprised how much I wear mine.

I'll keep that in mind, torontogirl. Actually, I DO have a rain jacket! I forget to count it because I own it for practicality, but it's black and would go with most everything I'm looking at.

abc, I'm a size 10 in shoes, but thank you so much for the offer! You are too kind. Thanks for the heads up about the moto jacket. I still think I'd like it, but only on cooler days if it doesn't breathe well. I have a few other faux leather pieces and they're definitely not for hot weather for that very reason. And thank you for the welcome! I've been reading the YLF blog for a couple years now but I'm brand new to the forum and so glad I decided to start posting. Everyone here is so helpful and friendly so far.

Oh and the midi from torrid - I loved one they had a month or two ago but was heart broken when I tried it on. It just did not flatter my wide hips at all. I believe if it had a structured waist and some seaming to fit through the hip then flare out it would have worked but when I tried this cut it just looked ridiculous on me. So I guess my advice would be to try it on for sure as you won't know and that could make or break some outfits you have in mind here. Good luck. I hope it fits you better than me

Hi Kaelyn, not sure if you've posted and I missed it but welcome.

I'm borderline reg/plus and love your picks here.

I own the lane Bryant moto in blush. I got it on sale around $70 but I must say every time I have worn it I sweat horribly. my other motos are real leather or another fabric that breathes, I feel like I'm swimming in my own sweat in this one. Just wanted you to keep this in mind as you try things.

I also have those converse shoes and if they fit you I would sell them to you to help you out on budget, I've only worn them a handful of times. Mine are size US 8.5. Let me know.

I'm gonna go back and look at your other items to see if I can comment. Like others I would be sure you have the right pieces and shoes to go with each silhouette. That's been my biggest challenge. For example wider leg pants needed a taller heel or boot than I had. Or leggings/skinnies needed a tunic. That kind of thing. Make sure you're thinking all that through but overall I like what you've picked and can't wait to follow you on this journey.

This looks really good Kaelyn! I agree with kkards - I think a few more toppers in the mix would be useful - perhaps a neutral trench/raincoat, a jean jacket, and/or a cardigan or some sort? Have fun putting it together!

You've put a lot of thought into your capsule and I really like it. Of the bottoms, I would start with the white and black cropped as the most versatile and also add the olive bottoms since you know they work for you. The flares and culottes are stylish but you will need to be careful that your tops match this different silhouette.

Since you have a lot of patterns, I'd focus more on adding solid tops with the exception of the black and white striped top (you love and can often work in pattern mixing).

Summer, the printed tops you mentioned are the ones I was leaning toward, and I thought the same thing about them being good for pattern mixing because they're simple and graphic rather than having their own busy pattern. I haven't found the right white jeans and cropped black pants yet but I'm budgeting for them and pretty much just waiting on them to hit the stores I want to buy from. It's still a bit early so they may not be available for a few more weeks. Thanks for your ideas on how to pair the things I've been looking at. That's a great help for narrowing them down.

From your list, I would go first with the white jeans and the black cropped pants. These would go with all the tops that you show here. If you then buy the floral pants, which you say you really love, you might want to cut back on some of the printed tops: of these I'd keep the striped top, the "New York" graphic tee and the skeleton tee. I think all all these could possibly be patterned mixed with the floral pants as well as working with the solids. All the solid tops will work beautifully, too.
Go with all the pieces that you say you love, including the shoes. If you can add the Converse, I'd get those, too.
If your budget allows, you can then go back to the flares and culottes. As Sally mentioned, these may be harder to match up with tops, so you may want to do as Angie suggests and buy these as complete outfits, so that you can be sure you're happy with the proportions. That may be true for the blush skirt as well.
Oh, yes, and try to get the dress if you find one you love.
I think you are off to an excellent start with your capsule, so I hope you will be able to manage plenty of the pieces you are looking for, but I know it's tricky on a tight budget. Good luck.

Bijou, great point about the blue jacket. I'll try to match as many tops to it as possible. I'm definitely planning on getting a pair of white jeans, but I'm waiting to see if Torrid gets more in the next several weeks because I prefer buying jeans there. Being plus size does limit my options a bit. And I definitely need a good, versatile dress! I had a pretty red one saved on Pinterest but discovered it had sold out when I put this together on YLF, so I'll be keeping an eye out for another.

kkards, I do have a denim jacket already. Once it gets fairly hot I don't wear toppers very much, so they aren't as pressing a need for me. I'd consider a vest but haven't seen any, or a white crocheted topper. As for shoes, I've got that mostly covered with items here and what I already have. I've never owned a ton of shoes so I'm used to having less variety than most prefer and I'm good with it. I can also always add on more next year, or even later this year if I find a good pair that will work year-round.

Have you checked out "IntoMind"? She's great at nailing down the basic foundation of a wardrobe.

My *impression* of your capsule is that there might be too much variety for a "starter" capsule on a budget.

i'm impressed with the time and effort you have put into this, good for you! I'm not a capsule person, so take what i say with a grain of salt.
In looking thru your collection the biggest gap i see is toppers….now i know this is a spring capsule and so its more warm weather driven, but i'd think about adding another layering piece, maybe a denim jacket or boyfriend cardigan. (or maybe you have these pieces in your fall capsule and they will carry over?)
the other question i have is about the footwear component of the capsule. i really like the shoes that chosen, but i'm wondering how they work with the bottoms. for example, which shoes are you planning to wear with the floral bottoms, the pink skirt, and if you get a pair of flared pants?

Congratulations on putting together a lovely capsule. Given you already have a number of printed tops - should you substitute some of the tops for additional bottoms? I love the blue moto, but if you go with that, then for me that would be the hero piece, and I would only buy items that work with it. Personally I love white jeans so I would add these into your capsule - they are a bit more dressy than denim and give a nice lightness to outfits. I would also keep some money aside for a great dress - the advantage of a dress (over a skirt) is that you get an instant outfit. Skirts in particular can be tricky if you don't buy a top that goes with it. I hope you have a lot of fun in putting together what looks like a wonderful spring wardrobe.

Here's the tunic T-shirt in a couple solid colors. I'd consider navy, white, or black. I also liked the red one, but decided against it because I have a couple other red tops in the mix. For people coming to the thread, do you think this would be a better choice than the striped version I have in the original post? (Honestly, I wish I could just have all of them, because they look so gosh darn comfy. I MIGHT consider getting two in lieu of another top on the list.)

Thanks, Sally!  Very helpful comments.

There ARE a lot of patterned tops here, but I'd be narrowing them down to one or two, and the solid ones will be prioritized. A couple of them are in there because they're sleeveless and would be good for late spring/summer, and the rest are "Huh, I really like that!" items. And I don't have a striped shirt for spring/summer yet, so I see that one as a "need" because I always feel stellar in stripes. Plus the black and white one is a tunic, and I don't have one yet. It also comes in a few solid colors I'd consider... maybe that WOULD be better. I'll think on it.

Bottoms and shoes are DEFINITELY going to be high priority. The olive pants are almost a definite "yes" because I have the same thing in black and wear the heck out of them. White jeans are also a definite "yes" once I find a suitable pair. The ponte pants I LOVE but are a bit pricey. The skirt is also a maybe.

The listed items haven't been 100% thought through because I can't really evaluate an item until I've found it. I'd make sure anything I bought would go with what I have for sure. Some of the different silhouettes (like flared pants) will be very easy to incorporate into my wardrobe with what I already have, others (like culottes) are low priority but under consideration to change things up. I'll be sure to be careful. :-)

Hi Kaelyn,

I am no expert on capsules...but I think you are doing well with your planning. I too overbuy on tops, and patterned tops. I had an issue last year with three pairs of patterned pants which in the most part only went with plain tops . This season I have added two pairs of plain crops and some plain shorts and this has made my current top selection go much further - in fact I have not added a top this summer (I did add a couple late last summer on sale though).

I would prioritise some bottoms/pants and footwear.

In terms of the finds above, I love the red high low tee, and I think the white modcloth tunic shirt would be great on you too. I think the moto would be a super piece as well. You cannot go wrong with white sneakers - I have those converse and find them very useful. The saddle shoes are great and I like the bag - having different colours makes it useful for mixing.

My only cautions are:
- you list a variety of silhouettes - flares, culottes, jeans, a full skirt - do you have tops that work with these different shapes
- you mention that you overbuy patterned tops. There are two patterns here, plus stripes, plus logo tees...

I will leave further comments to better capsule experts than myself. I will check back in and see what others have to say.

This year's goal is to finish working on a core wardrobe so that after this year, I never have to buy a ton of things at once again to fill gaping holes again for the foreseeable future. This is everything I'm considering so far for the spring. There are a few items I'd like that I haven't collected yet but are on my radar:

* White jeans
* Flared pants
* Light denim
* Olive cargo pants
* Navy shoes & bag
* A perfect spring dress
* Black cropped pants
* Black culottes

It's not like I'm starting COMPLETELY from scratch, but I'm in sore, sore need of more neutrals, more choices for bottoms, more shoes, and more SOLID tops (I'm a bit of a pattern fiend, but patterned tops aren't so good for mixing and matching when you have to be in exactly the right mood for any pattern mixing). The main colors I wanted to go with, besides neutrals, are tomato red, cobalt, and pastel blue. I also want to add more blush because all I have is a bag, hence the skirt. Adding white as a neutral is a huge priority because I'm lacking light neutrals, and I thought olive and cognac would be good for me in small doses. (Olive doesn't love me, even though my eyes are olive green. Life isn't fair.)

This is probably the best I've ever done actually planning what to buy. I'm on a really tight budget so I'm looking to get as much bang for my buck as I can. I will, by no means, be able to buy everything in this collection (unless anyone has found a winning lotto ticket and is willing to share?).

In case you're wondering, my favorites on the list (the ones that I saw and immediately fell head over heels in LOVE) are the blue moto jacket, the floral pants, the saddle shoes (especially after I showed my capsule in progress to my Mum and she told me she had a pair just like them growing up!), the olive pants, and the cognac booties and color block bag. The yellow sweater is a major wildcard because I pretty much never wear anything yellow, but that one is the PERFECT shade of it and I think it'll go with a lot. Who knows? I might end up being a Team Yellow convert if I buy it and love it.

So what I need from all you experienced YLFers is this:

1. Suggestions of things that are missing from this capsule and my above list.
2. Which items you think would be the most VERSATILE. I'm talking good for color mixing, good for different silhouettes, tops that can be worn well with pants or skirts, etc.
3. How'd I do? Just in general? The concept of capsules is relatively new to me. I've been a YLF reader for 2-3 years now but this is the first time I've been in a good enough financial position to actually plan a seasonal capsule of this size.

Thanks if you read all that, and double thanks if you're willing to help me assess my shopping list!
