LOL. There’s SO MUCH wind, Angie. I honestly didn’t think of that.

(I will say, the wind doesn’t come up suddenly here. It’s pretty much either a Santa Ana day or it’s not.)

LaPed, I’m sure my issue isn’t with all Tencel. I just haven’t figured out how to differentiate what works and what doesn’t. Speaking of the two-piece jumpsuit look...I dug up some old pics (2017) of the lightweight pants that preceded this pair in my wardrobe.

(Will respond to the rest of your great suggestions later. Dealing with a migraine and am tempting fate with my screen time right now.)

The Patagonia pants remind me of the sarong pants I got a couple of summers ago. Very breezy and fun —
for me they are JFE so I have to be feeling good to wear them, but the silhouette is not in my comfort zone the way it is in yours. I think they’re a nice variation on your preferred loose pants style. Worth a try!

The Patagonia wrap pants look cool. Angie also featured something sorta like that by Athleta in a recent roundup. Mine are silk with a very busy pattern, think they are from that Pac-Sun store in the mall. I doubt you want anything so kitschy.

Your preplanning continues to amaze and impress me. I’m thinking about giving myself a spring/summer capsule when we get back from our trip, and keeping most clothes in the cellar.

I’m the opposite, and have much better luck with Tencel than with silk. It would be fun to have some Only Child pants to go with the top! Potential for a two-piece jumpsuit look.

Jonesy, thanks for your insights. You're right, cotton feels great in summer, and I don't have a lot of it in my wardrobe...probably because I don't like ironing.

Angie, no, I'm ready for something different. I'm looking for a breezy, non-denim pant with some structure that I can wear with my black summer tops, and perhaps with a graphic tee. I know there was some talk about utility pants above, but those would be a separate purchase for me, as they're essentials. The EF replacement would be more of a statement piece for me.

I'm thinking lantern pants, harems, woven wide legs, or maybe a wrap style like this?

https://www.patagonia.com/prod.....=s21_funda

VERY cohesive and thought out as always, Jenn. I like seeing the addition of more pattern! And ivory sounds great too.

If I can wear Spring colours year round - you can wear Autumn colours year round :)

Are you looking for the same type of EF wide leg and in that colour?

Gorgeous colors and aspirational cohesion! I love that deep rust/terra cotta color and it suits you so well. I can see now how that patterned duster absolutely demanded to come home with you! A crisp cotton poplin is so nice for spring/summer, IMHO. Here's hoping your new replacement pair gives you at least 92 wears :).

Gillian Pearl, I think it’s a combination of the color and the knit fabrication. I would like something with a bit more structure—so lantern pants, woven joggers, or wide legs that don’t fall against the body.

LaPed, I just discovered Sotela recently and like a lot about them, but their pants are mostly Tencel and Lyocell, which aren't my favorite. I always seem to stain that instantly and it holds onto/shows oil stains like a bugger. For a similar vibe, I've been thinking about Only Child, who do cotton and linen.

cat2, sadly, Amour Vert's sizing doesn't work for me for bottoms, though I can wear some of their tops.

Joy, I have gotten some of my biggest workhorse pieces from Target over the years. Three are gems to be had there.

Thanks, Lynn.

Sal, probably not a skirt, because I often want to wear pants for a break from the slip shorts I wear under skirts and dresses. Another jumpsuit is a thought...

Lovely pieces Jenn- fingers crossed for the dress.

In terms of pants replacements I think a contrast to jeans - or alternative - is what you want. I like lantern pants or utility pants - but it also could be a skirt or jumpsuit?

I can see that that denim would be too heavy for your hot weather and would not be good for Disney rides that might get you wet. I like the idea of olive, maybe nylon cropped joggers. My best ever were from Target a couple of years ago. Strangers stopped me to ask where I found them. This summer I hope to roll up my olive EF crepe. Olive seems to go with everything.

Love all the rust! The toffee/brown pants do stand out as *slightly* out of sync with your tight palette. Have you looked at Sotela for pants? Natural fibers, inclusive sizing, good range of neutral/earthy colours... I think they have a wide-leg and a more tapered style.

Joy, my widelegs are polyester crepe, so I don't feel like I have to be precious about them. I don't usually wear polyester, but Eileen Fisher's crepe is an exception. I don't think denim would work similarly to these in my wardrobe (too heavy), but I've kind of been thinking about wideleg black denim, as well. Maybe next fall or winter.

rachylou, hah! I just don't like spring colors.

shevia, SoCal has a Mediterranean climate, so it makes sense it'd kind of be in sync with your -actual- Mediterranean climate. Go figure! Also, you've just described exactly how I want my wardrobe to work.

Liesbeth, I don't really vary my colors by season, but the lack of seasons really has me feeling a need to differentiate what I'm wearing. I think you're onto something with your comment about not having a variety of occasions to dress for, too.

lisap, agreed. I have been thinking about lantern pants too.

nemosmom, alas, the floral dress probably won't make it into the summer capsule. It's not breezy enough to be comfortable in truly hot weather.

cat2, you're so right about the seasons. I like the joke that LA's seasons are "Fire, Pilot, Mudslide, and Awards." I've been low-key shopping for olive cargos for a while now (they're on my essentials list) and they'e been ridiculously hard to find in a good fit and ethical manufacture. I've never had this much trouble before, but all my go-tos have failed me.

Cargoes in a lightweight fabric would give you a change in silhouette and not be too hot for this leg of the year. I think SoCal has a total of two seasons, Summer and Not Summer. And Not Summer seems to be getting shorter.

Changing the way you split the seasons is really smart! Seasons still trip me up, even into year 4 of a new climate...

I am interested to see how it goes keeping your core essentials available all year. I think it definitely works for SoCal! The black and white dress could look really fresh in the summer!

Lovely capsule. I didn't think you wore different colors at different times of year? Are you craving something lighter? I cannot imagine a climate without 4 distinct season - though by now I've really had it with the cold and rain :). The lack of variety in dressing for the occasion these days is making winter seem even longer I think.

Ah brilliant switch of thinking regarding the seasons. Our summer also eats into most of Autumn, and our winter is more like many people's spring. Spring itself is more of that until it changes suddenly to Summer. Hmm.
Anyway, I like your new essentials based wardrobe thinking. Your core essentials probably work most of the year and your statement pieces can signify mood. Anyway that is what I got from it .
