An old college professor of mine went with her husband to Paris on vacation some years ago, and she wanted to do a little research at the Bibliothèque nationale while there. When they arrived, she wanted to go to the BN right away to make sure it got done. Her husband argued that they had all week to do it. Well, she won the argument, and they went to the BN. And it turned out that it was a good thing that she had, because the library was closed the whole rest of the time they were there. Some days it was closed because it rained (yes, they closed for the rain), and other days it was because the transit workers were on strike. But it also cracks me up because until this summer this was something that was just not done!!!  Running shoes out on the street = horrible cliche of the tacky ugly American. No one with any taste at all would wear gym shoes in public. Ad naseum on any blog or magazine or TV style show you would care to read or watch...I'm not kidding and I'm trying not to be snarky (not succeeding I know) because I read and watched many such discussions as my style sense and self esteem plummeted.  So this year it's cool enough for Paris.
