Lisalou, is it a question of knowing your tastes--you know what you like and what you don't like--but not knowing how to recreate the outfits and find the things you like on your own?

I tend to think "taste" and "style" are one in the same! They are both individual flavours - something personal, choices you make because they're appealing to you, whether it's because they define you well, or you admired them on another person or in another's home, etc. It's pretty immediate, a visceral reaction - whether you love something or not - but it's created through a variety of factors: exposure, personality, personal aesthetic. Just my two cents! I agree that it's not wise to say "good" or "bad" - just different!

I should clarify! I wasn't questioning good vs "bad" taste, as I agree, it's 100% subjective and personal. I was thinking more, if I'm happy with and confident in my taste (the clothes/pieces I love), how do I align my style with that? The more I think about it, the more I think it's about confidence

Especially in the creative worlds of art, marketing, decor, fashion, food and style, is "taste" so very, VERY subjective. Who is to say that your taste is good or bad? Only the person making the judgement. Judging taste is a slippery slope and one I am very careful to make either "good and bad" on YLF.

I think of taste as being the pieces you choose, and style being the way that you put them together. You can have great taste, but not very much style- and vice versa!

I think in terms of clothing good taste may be a limiting factor, I believe there is room for fun and irreverence too in our style choices.

Hmm, taste and style are just too subjective to say who does or does not have it, and what constitutes 'good' (in my opinion).

This is inspired by Shannon's post on whether or not you can buy style, and all the wonderful, thoughtful responses.

I'm thinking about taste vs style. I know I have great taste (if I do say so!), but in the style department I am lacking. What's the difference, and where does the disconnect come from? Is it confidence that makes someone stylish? How do you take good taste and turn it into good style? (and of course, on a budget is always nice!)
