for me a great bag
~fits nicely over my shoulder with a coat on (a cross body will also work)
~is easy to open, and i can reach in and get pull my sunglasses out quickly when driving
~is lightweight, but well made. leather is nice, but i have a really nice nylon twill bag that i love
~for travel, i want a bag that can hold my phone, iPad, and a scarf (i'm always cold)

as for color, well, i admit, i go mostly go for black, because well, its safe. but i do have a red as well as cream bag that i use for summer.

i'm very interested in what others see as needed for a great bag

Good grief, when you all figure this out, let me know. I just woke up, also, and am not coherent, so hopefully will have something to add later.

I don't have money for the super expensive ones but I try to get the best quality I can with my modest budget. Some things I have discovered.
I love black bags so I usually have a super fancy and a "less fancy" one on rotation.
I seldom buy a bag in a color I wear a lot, i.e blue and grey, because I don't want my bags to match, I want them to " go".
To me, any bright bag is a neutral. They go with everything.
I only buy leather. Other materials don't go the distance. It feels wasteful to me.
I look for: Contrasting lining as to avoid the dark hole syndrome, crossbody strap (Ideal), structure but no stiffness, good scale for my height, interesting details but not over designed.
I usually narrow it down to a style, go the store, sometimes more than once before I pull the trigger. As of now, I am looking at one of the classic coach bags, you know the old school ones, in cognac. The next step is to go pet them... haha...

Mochi & several others on her thread mention wanting a bag that will elevate everything they wear & go with everything. I, too, am looking for this. However, I'm not sure where to even begin.

Is a handbag like this a certain color - perhaps, fits into one or more capsules? Or a certain type or structure? Do you just recognize it when you see it?

As y'all can see, I'm totally clueless about this.
