I'm with several others, and just consider them a base, classic. I do think it's important to get the thickness in proportion to what you're wearing, but that's more about styling them I've never been a fan of bright coloured ones, to my eye they look childish. But those more neutral and dark ones linked above are gorgeous.

Great question!

Interesting. When I wear skirts or dresses they tend to be more on the statementy side - bright colour, mixed media, animal print etc. As a result I've literally never purchased tights in any colour other than black or neud, be they opaque or otherwise. You're giving me ideas, though. An opaque pair in a dark neutral other than black would be fun. Maybe in one of the dark reds that are so prevalent now? That would sure be current. Thanks Una!
Your reply

I've been thinking on these lines recently, too, Una. I run warm, and commute by car, so skirts and dresses will work without heavy tights until we're down around freezing. After that, it's either tights AND tall boots or pants. My problem? I teach in a college, and I don't want to seem to be dressing like my students, who sport tights a lot in winter months. Sheerer hose seem more grown-up, somehow. So, I'm looking for:

1. colors and patterns that are age-appropriate (grown-up), but interesting
2. tights that flattery substantial legs.
3. Harmony with my main colors: black, navy, grey, cobalt, burgundy.

I'm just beginning my search, so I have little wisdom to offer so far!

I don't really wear skirts/dresses but if I did I'd wear those gray textured tights AJ linked to without a second thought - I think they look great! I also like the idea of the colored tights if done right like in the other pic. Now I want some gray cabled socks that look like this to wear with my taupe boots, rolled pants and a taupe sweater.

Great thread!
I wear solid tights and don't really think about what they're adding. My most frequent colors are black, brown, gray and green and match them either to the dress/skirt or shoe.

I love the links AJ posted! Both are fab, but #2 is probably something I would really try…unless I get REALLY brave and try my red velvet platform sandals with some shade of blue tights. Hmmm….

I never thought of tights as current or not current. They're just there to keep your legs warm. I like the idea of grey or black with cognac. I'm going to try that as soon as the weather gets cold enough for tights.

I wear them most of the time in cooler weather, as I prefer dresses in the winter. I've never thought about them being "current" or not; to me that's like asking how to make black pants or a white button down current. They are classic, so I suppose if paired with a "current" outfit, they by default become part of that, but they will never be either current or dated on their own.

I rather enjoyed when it was trendy to wear black opaques with open-toed shoes, but that required a shoe with some heft for it to look proper. With fewer platforms and more refined shoes coming back around, that look is no longer current, but was fun while it lasted.

Great pic, AJ! Like Aubergine, I feel odd in colored tights. I guess I'm not creative enough, or don't have the artsy/retro flair needed for them. And Augbergine, that's how I wear black tights too. It's easy, but it also feels like such a default and I'd like it to look more intentional somehow.

I think those colors are lovely--but I'm probably too conservative to do that at work.
I do really like the look of some of the thin-ribbed tights, in a dark neutral, because the rib introduces a sort of 2-tone effect. Need a plain skirt material for those. And I wear gray tights but am trying something more like charcoal that has a tiny fleck so is has just a slight bit of contrast with black footwear.
I find grays hard to match (tights +shoes) and have to think more about combining neutrals than matching.

Is it bad that I wear opaque black tights throughout the winter and never particularly worry about whether it's current or not? I kind of figure they're just a base, and they may not be adding much to the outfit, but they're not detracting from it either as long as they work with whatever else I'm wearing.

I do have other dark neutrals that I wear when I get sick of every outfit having to be black-based. For me, it seems like navy and brown tights are easier to wear than gray because it's easier to figure out shoes to coordinate with them.

Colored tights always seem fun and I have a few pairs, but can never figure out how to wear them without looking cartoony. Although I may have to copy AJ's first picture! I love how it looks and actually have burgundy tights and navy suede booties.

Edit: Greyscale's post reminded me that I also love wearing black tights with brown or cognac shoes. When I do it, it's generally boots, not oxfords, so probably a little less hipster-y. And I feel like the black tights/brown shoes combo has only been a thing within the last few years, so it's current at least by my standards.

It's trendy here to wear black tights and vintage-y brown shoes (oxfords, etc, not feminine). I think of it as the defining hipster look. Though maybe that's a few years old and on its way out, now.

It would seem to me that neutral opaques are classics that can help calm down statement pieces. On the other hand, a standout color could add some pizazz to a classic outfit.

I rarely wear skirts in fall/winter, and when I do, I prefer patterned hose with them. But sometimes, if the outfit feels too busy, I will go for simple opaque black or grey hose. It might not be the most fashion-forward thing to do, but I do not see anything wrong with it either.

In the winter, i can not fathom wearing sheers, even tripled up. Talk about the segmented worm with the panty portions piled on.

Spinning off Sveta's post on patterned tights, are there current-looking ways to sport opaque tights in black or colors? Janet suggested layering pattern over solid, which I love. But what about straight-up solids (including wool), which are sometimes the only way to keep warm in my climate?
