Isabel - that's do sad. So close, and you had no idea you would not be able to order it. I hope you find another beautiful trench soon!!
MuseumGal - who knew fish sauce could be do dangerous? Gosh , that stuff must be potent. Blue brocade sounds so stunning. Being a jacket girl, that really hurts. Hope you find another gorgeous blazer!! Your oxfords sound amazing. It such a good time to shop oxfords perhaps something similar will come along. Fingers crossed for you!!
April - I remember your post when the dress resurfaced. Gorgeous dress - I can see why it haunts you. So sorry it did not work out. But eBay is a treasure trove, I'm still hoping another in the right size surfaces for you.

Oh, Angie. I'm so sorry that happened. :( I'm not generally sentimental about clothing but I know I'm in the minority and you must have been so upset.

Is there any consolation in the idea that a bride with very little means was probably overjoyed to find something so magnificent?

My own was probably the Magaschoni dress that Una and I were both ogling at Searle a few years ago. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....killing-me I actually ordered it, but got a note the next day saying it was gone in every size.

Then it resurfaced on eBay recently in a deep midnight blue colorway, but in a bigger size than I needed, and I bought it just in case it could be tailored down. But it couldn't and I sent it back.

I wish I had bought it at the time, without hesitating so long that it was gone, even though I didn't "need" it.

I still miss two perfect items from the 80s that I loved to death. The first was a blue brocade blazer that made me feel like a million bucks. It had a violent encounter with a bottle of nuoc mam (Vietnamese fish sauce) and multiple professional cleaners could not get the smell out. The second was the perfect pair of white wingtip oxfords. I wore those every day for at least three years until they literally fell apart on my feet. Since oxfords have made such a comeback the last few years I've kept my eyes open for a similar pair, but nothing has hit the right spot yet.

The only thing that made my THE one impractical was the color.....it happened 1.5 years ago. I had wanted a deep red, almost raspberry trench forever. I tried many over the years and never found a color that I liked. Then while at shoptoberfest, with the ladies, I found it at Banana Republic ! It was perfect. I left it because I did not want to pack it. When I got home 3 days later, it was sold out on line and I found out it was a limited edition that only stores in big cities got. I was crestfallen.

Oh Una, I remember that loss. : (

Astrid- that is so sad. Gorgeous dress and unusual. Just love it's graceful, elegant lines and soft muted color. Hasty decisions. I don't remember who posted the tread have you ever bought, returned and rebought. I've done that and the worst is when you had it and can't get it back. So sorry. Another tough lesson learned.

My mum managed to snap up the much demanded Stella McCartney for H&M dress during her lunch break in 2005. It was a lot of money for me as a schoolgirl, but I wanted it the moment I saw it. Forget the picture, it looked much better IRL. I put it on, looked great in it, loved it. I returned it because of some very minor fit issues which would have been easy to fix (I know that now).

Una - that would be so upsetting. People are awful taking things that aren't theirs. How they can enjoy those things is a total mystery to me. So sorry your lost your beautiful coat. It always seems to be the most precious things. Why don't we ever lose stuff we don't like. I just never works that way does it?
Anne - that is the pits. I used to do things like that. I didn't feel worth of really nice things. Now I'd rather have what I really love. If that means having less of it, all the better. The okay stuff is just clutter anyway. But sometimes it's hard to feel you "deserve" something you really want when it's more expensive that what you really "need."

There was a Coach 65th anniversary bag that was just perfect, and I even found it at outlet. And bought it. And then I decided that it was a frivolous purchase and took it back. I have regretted it ever since. It was just SUCH a classic bag, and the colour was perfect. Practicality be damned! When I love something now, I buy it and KEEP it!

Anne - being virtuous, cost conscious, thrifty is a good thing but to be honest it's never brought me happiness. I always buy within my means but I have been guilty of being penny wise and pound foolish too. That must have been really upsetting to have that dress rip. I am sure we've all had wardrobe malfunctions. Oy, shudder. Bad memories!!

When my parents and I were shopping for a dress for me to wear to my high school graduation and Dinner Dance we found the most perfect LBD. Fitted and flattered to me to perfection! It was $90 which was about par for the course at that date. But we also found one for sale at $55 and ever mindful of costs I went for the cheaper one which was adequate, but not as good.

Mind you, given that I put on a few pounds the next year, starting at uni, I probably wouldn't have been able to fit into it very long. The cheaper dress ignobly ripped up the back seam while I was wearing it to an 18th party!

Ambergreen - I think having things stolen is really traumatic. It made me feel very vulnerable. I think it was the first time I really understood the world was not a safe place. Sad. But I do hope we can let those things go. In an unsafe world, it's even more important to take joy in the now!!

I'm sure if I think about it I'll remember a couple, but I had more Suz-style tragedies...items stolen, misplaced, or ruined by others. And more often than not, only after a few wearings, too.

a once-worn, very cool tee from my first favorite vintage store (not a vintage tee, it had the shop's name in a pink "Japan" sun...pink was their color). Mom left it at the laundromat.

my favorite mom-me-down pintucks-and-lace-front tuxedo blouse (same laundromat casualty).

a perfect gray wool V-neck sweater dress (I'd wear it today if I still had it). I believe this was stolen by a friend of a roommate's.

a pair of yellow-and-black ticking-stripe skinnies from Renaissance in New York. Stolen from a dryer at college.

a Henri Bendel cotton kimono/yukata robe with yellow cabbage roses (probably stolen by a boyfriend's brother's girlfriend)

perfectly-fitting Calvin Klein gray skinny jeans (sister burned them with an iron, leaving a nice, iron-shaped print. She would always take my clothes without ever asking). First pair of jeans I paid $50 for.

a pair of Perry Ellis black velvet jeans that somehow got into storage at my grandmother's and mysteriously disappeared

a black-and-turquoise tiered skirt from India that suffered the same fate

These were all in the 80s. In the 70s, there was that brand-new leather trench coat with fur cuffs that my mom had got me that burned up in a fire. Only a cuff was left. I had never had a chance to wear it even once.

As you can tell, my memories of each of these things is very vivid. I might need some kind of counselor for my CPTSD. :P

Mo - that Pucci dress is very, very beautiful and special. I am beginning to really think that having that truly perfect item that makes your heart sing (if you can responsibly afford it with proper budgeting and have a working wardrobe) may be better than always making the practical choice. My 11's really make me happy!! I hope there will be another extraordinary maxi and this time you'll say yes!
Donna - I think we had the same mom!! At least they were cut from the same cloth. I had 4 outfits for 5 days of the week and the did not mix and match. I am convinced this is why I am so lenient in letting my son pick the clothes he wants and making sure he has more than enough. Bad memories of those ugly practical things.

At the moment, I can't think of any perfect items that got away, but even after close to 50 years, I still remember those ugly but *practical* items my parents made me wear. I'm sure there must have been more attractive yet affordable items out there. . .I sure hope DD won't say the same thing to me years from now! But in those days, you weren't allowed to question your parents. Well, actually my elderly mom is still of that opinion.

Oh yes, the Emilio Pucci silk dress I thought was too frivolous a use of 3 month's clothing budget. Sigh. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ay-feature
And more recently, a not that expensive, but somehow also seemingly frivolous maxi I did not buy http://wesc.com/product/37733

Columbine - ouch!! That would have been such a great workhorse!! I do hope one comes along but tough lesson to learn. The simple is sometimes harder to find than the exquisite!!
rabbit - wow, that coat sounds amazing. I have a major thing for period clothing, steampunk, do not let me loose at the renaissance festival when the high end custom vendors are there. I can see why it haunts you, just the thought of it is thrilling! Hoping something else exquisite comes your way!!
Runcarla- that is a hurt me if I ever heard one. That crazy impossible piece and that it was fantastic with your coloring, wow, painful. I guess it's also a truism that if you have the piece for something somehow the ocassion will arise for it. Kind of like a riff on "when the student is ready...." And I totally agree, just having something beautiful is a delight in it's own right. I collect antiques and it's really true "a thing of beauty is a joy forever!"
