The morning fog is lifting later and later it seems! This has been a cooler summer than most (at least in my part of the East Bay) but it sin't over yet and September can be so warm that I never want to think Fall until October.
I have been using the fall back denim jacket or a blazer to layer until things warm up. A light topper in the evenings if we go out - usually an olive cotton anorak or again the denim jacket.

On the shoes - I have hunted all summer for a more covered up sandal and never quite found the right pair. Ballet flats or an open toe flat fill that hole for me. No boots until Fall.

There is a definite need in my closet for 'feels like summer, looks like fall' items (not to mention 'feels like winter, looks like spring' but that's a whole 'nother issue). I keep looking for them and think I've found them and then it never works out like I've hoped.

I'm in the Bay Area too and this time of year is always difficult. Today I wore shorts/tee/scarf and I was freezing until 10, then I was comfortable. Yesterday I went the other way, jeans/silk shell/linen topper/booties and felt great in the morning but had to lose the topper by 11 and the jeans by 3pm. I think the outfits that worked for me this week were a combination: linen pants/tee/sandals, linen a-line skirt/lightweight chambray shirt/sandals, all in darker colors of moss green, navy, and cobalt. This season is definitely one I need to think about more in my planning since the last few years we've had heat waves until November. I'm hunting through the summer sales lately trying to capitalize for our Indian Summer. I'll be following this hoping others have better solutions!

I'm with you, Laura. I had a hard time dressing in California (Bay Area) in the summer for the same reason. It's like that off and on here in Seattle lately, too.
I did not have a going away outfit for my wedding. But I didn't have a traditional wedding dress, either; I wore a wool crepe knee-length dress and black pumps.

This is where we are, now, too. I change, if I can. And I have to say I am getting a lot of wear out of my white jeans right now.

When we get transitional weather, I make small changes. I might wear a short sleeve top instead of sleeveless. Instead of sandals I might wear closed toe shoes such as moccasins. With shorts. Today our official temps were 61 to 95. So I split the difference - short sleeves with sandals.

We were in the Bay Area last weekend and the temps were difficult to deal with: very warm in Sacramento, warm in Marin, cold on the ferry, chilly at the Ferry Building. How do you dress for that? I decided to dress for cold summer - long cotton pants, EF silk sweater, leather bomber jacket, boots. I felt just right.

Hmm, maybe that's my problem; I don't have any closed-toe sandals. All my sandals are pretty bare. I agree with Kelly, it's just a tad too warm for boots and scarves here, still. I have worn a couple of my gauzy sweaters with shorts or capris on days when I know I'll be in the a/c all day, but otherwise it's too hot.

Don't tell Angie, but I think this is actually the perfect weather for capris. But worn with a basic top and sandals they are pretty boring. Or at least mine are.

Yeah I was thinking at my temps, more the 70-80 range. With yours from 80s-90s I'd do closed-toe sandal styles and a really breezy top, then slouchy linen pants or soft long shorts. Same with the big scarf and jacket, though

I think boots look seasonally confused around here, Aida. I think it's really too hot unless it is some kind of perforated or cut out bootie. I've been defaulting to sleeveless and cropped jeans/linen pants/harem like pants. I've been trying to buy tops that look okay without the topper because it's usually too hot for them most of the day.

I like wearing shorts with boots, lightweight summer sweaters, and a huuuuge gauzy scarf on days like that. Pop a denim jacket or light-but-chunky cardigan over the top for the cool times. But yes, those swings are tough (ours don't get up nearly as high though, so perhaps my tactic won't work if it's closer to 90F!).

I always have trouble with this time of year. Still 85-90+ in mid-afternoon, but in the low 60s at night. Argh! I have lived in the Bay Area for over 15 years now but I'm still not good at the wide temperature variations. Where I grew up, if the temp changed that fast it meant a tornado was coming!

What to wear, what to wear...Shorts and tanks are too cool in the morning, jeans too heavy in the afternoon. Anything designed to work with layers looks unfinished when you remove some of them. Maybe I should just act like a movie star or a debutante and change outfits completely several times a day.

(Speaking of which, did anyone have a 'going away' outfit when they got married? I didn't but I remember some of my older cousins doing so, and I know my mom did. You'd change into something nice, like a tweed skirt suit, to say goodbye to everyone after the wedding reception and wear it to wherever the honeymoon was going to be.)
