Texstyle, did you treat your bag with anything before you started to use it? I'm curious because I have used Meltonian rain and stain spray on some of my leather bags just like I do my shoes and it has worked well. I just haven't used it on a white/Ivory bag or pair of shoes.

It is a beautiful bag - the price is a bit off putting to someone like me who is pretty conservative, but hey, you only live once and if you can afford it, you love it and you want it, why not? Okay, so maybe it will be a little hard to keep clean. Details! My ivory leather bag from last year has a lot of blue jean staining on the edges but I'm going to try and clean it before giving up on it. I LOVED having an ivory bag for spring/summer. Otherwise, it didn't really get very dirty and I live a pretty casual, sometimes rugged life.

I love the discussion everyone. So many interesting thoughts that I missed after I went to sleep last night!

Cocolotion, the Feragamo bag in your finds is the alternate bag I considered. It is also a neutral, and it's less expensive. I already have a medium sized Cognac bag that I love so I eliminated it from my list. I don't need more than one. I have also seen the Alexander Wang bag. Very nice!

Lisa, I love the idea of having a bag made. I wish I knew someone local who did this. I could always check Etsy, and may do this. In the past there was a woman who made some beautiful cloth totes that I purchased and still enjoy. I particularly love the idea of supporting an artist with my purchase.

Dimity, I haven't considered whether I would feel self conscious carrying this purse. I already stand out in so many other ways where I live and work because of my powerful professional position as a female physician and medical director. I dress nicely but not extravagantly. If you have seen my posts you know that my clothing is simple but of high quality. I probably stand out in most crowds for my physical appearance, but perhaps my clothes add to that as well. I don't think it would be easy for me to blend in, ever, so I don't try. The quality of my clothes is most definitely higher than most people I work with, but that has to do with the nature of our positions. I keep up my look wherever I go, because it's a small community, and I bump into people I know everywhere. I would feel more self conscious if I looked unkempt given my standing in the community. I am not someone who tries or needs to blend in. I also do not try or need to stand out,

Having said this, I know your point was different. You were speaking to Several things it seems. One being the effect of the manufacturing of this bag on the environment/world. Another it seems being my self consciousness in carrying this bag around other people, perhaps people who have less, or could not afford such a bag, or maybe even someone who is homeless or mentally ill perhaps. These are excellent questions, and I do not go through an environmental impact query before I make a purchase. I do however consider how long something might last before purchasing, and aim for long lasting items, thereby reducing environmental impact. In terms of considering what I am going to call the "shame" factor, or the "have" and "have not" factor of feeling self conscious carrying this bag around people who have much less than me etc. I live with that every day. I work with mentally ill people. Often they are impoverished. I know I have more than them. I see them and listen to them, and work with them every day of the week. perhaps it's my personality but I have never felt self conscious or or as you put it "judged" about what I wear around them. My feeling is that they all have potential to learn, grow, and function in this world. My job is to help them with this. What I wear around them isn't as important as my attitude and how I wear it. If I am wearing clothes to flaunt myself and show off my wealth, that will come across, if I am wearing clothes that flatter and make me feel good as a person, and professional, and fit my personality, then that will show. People of all ages can tell the difference. I have seen this dynamic among the teenagers in our classrooms. One student somehow becomes the one everyone is somehow jealous of or judging, yet that person does not necessarily have the most expensive or even the nicest items. I also do not think my spending less on a purse is going to put more food on someone else's table, or more clothes on their backs, etc. What I do for work however, will potentially allow many people to function better in the world. They may be able to finish school, to hold a job, to get by without becoming homeless, etc. this is how I make my contribution. It is my life work, and I truly believe in it.

I have to say that the exercise of adding up the total cost of what you are wearing is interesting. My DD did it for one of her art classes (conceptual art) and I did it for one week. It's interesting, and eye opening.

Golden pig, thanks for sharing your story! It is helpful to me as I am going through my thought process about this bag.

Shevia, you are correct about the perforations! When I visit your country, I will not bring a perforated leather bag! My son brought home a lot of sand and dust in his duffle bag after his five weeks there this past summer! It shouldn't be a problem here, we don't have too much dust.

Thank you for sharing your story about the Coach bag. I loved reading it, and I feel I got to know you better.

If you really want this bag and can afford it, treat yourself by all means. It looks like it's on back order at Nordstrom shipping mid-April, you'll even have some time to think about it.

As for longevity, my personal opinion is that solid leather may stand the test of time better than perforated leather. Perforated leather has been trending for the past 2 years, and it could be one of those things that gets identified with this period. I also think that one tires of patterned things more quickly than solid. Then there's the whole issue of white soiling easily which Rabbit points out. Of course I may be 100% wrong, but am offering you my doubts as you are a doctor and used to uncertainty, right?

For pure joy, get the white perforated bag. For investment/longevity, get the one in camel. Or is it cognac. In any case, here it is, and a bit less expensive to boot.

And now on to me -- I totally get this urge to own a certain bag! For the past 1 plus year, I have wanted one of these bags from Alexander Wang. I even got a poor imitation of it last year (which promptly ripped at the seams). Then, while browsing Barney's Co-op recently (why do I feel like an impostor when I go in that store?) I got to hold one in person. I'm sure it's not at the same level of workmanship as a Ferragamo, but still, I want it. Only it's $750! That's my level of a pricey item. It would be a 2-3 year item for me, but I am basically a one bag or just a few bags type of girl, so it would get a lot of use. Your thread is getting me to think… maybe?

Hi Staysfit,
Congrats on turning 50! I think that bag is gorgeous and it sounds like it's within your budget and it really speaks to you, so it would be a great choice for your milestone birthday. White is a classic color and the perforations are really pretty. I just got a Kate Spade perforated cream satchel and I have been carrying it around even in winter, so I don't think it has to be a "summer only" bag. I love the shape of the bag too. So I don't think you can go wrong if you feel strongly that it is "the one"!

Like you, my first designer bag was a black Coach that my DH (then boyfriend) gave to me in med school. I carried it around every day for years until it wore out. Now I have a pretty extensive nice handbag collection, but until last year did not own any "super luxury" designer bags. I also debated what to get for my 40th and thought about a nice watch or jewelry, but I'm a handbag girl so I ended up getting a Chanel bag. It really spoke to me more than a fancy watch or jewelry and I figured I'd use it way more than a strand of pearls or whatever the classic must haves are. I was hoping to get a red 2.55, but when I went there I didn't find the exact size/type I wanted but I did find a different red Chanel bag (French Riviera) that ended up being the perfect color and size, plus it was a lot cheaper (almost half the price of the 2.55!) and more durable for everyday use. It was about the same price as the bag you are considering and is by far the most expensive item in my closet. But it's really versatile--I use it for MOTG, work, or even a clutch for date night/parties. As for "investments", I agree with Thistle that you shouldn't think of it in that way. Actually I think it's the only thing I own that could be worth more now than when I bought it, because Chanel keeps raising their prices and the same bag is apparently $800 more now than when I bought it a year and a half ago, so I could probably sell it used for more than I paid for it new. But would you really want to sell your milestone handbag? I don't think so--so I don't really consider it a true "investment".

Thought you might enjoy the "saga" of how Ms. Scarlet joined my closet:
http://goldenpig.lookfab.com/p.....ss-scarlet

One of the versions I saw was a color blocked 2.55--no way, that was way too trendy for me (and I don't mind trendy normally, but not for something this expensive!). I don't think the white perforations read too trendy though! I like classics with a twist, so I'd love a bag like the one you are considering.

One thing I was kind of surprised by though, is that even though it's super expensive, it hasn't become my one and only bag. I thought I'd be wearing it all the time (and I did for two weeks straight to prove how versatile it was: http://goldenpig.lookfab.com/p.....-two-weeks) But I don't necessarily use the bag any more frequently than my other cheaper workhorse bags. I just have so many different bags that I like that I can't commit to being a one-bag girl. But it does make me happy every time I do wear it. (Especially when I get to wear matching red purses with my mini-me: http://goldenpig.lookfab.com/p.....-scarlet-d
Maybe someday she will get to have my real one (she's already asking me when!)

I love LisaPs suggestion of having an artisanal custom made bag done up just for you.

Or even semi=custom. I know Longchamp had a very classic bag that could be done up in a number of colors, straps, and even a perforated monogram if one wished.

Thistle, thank you for your very wise words about 'consumables' versus 'investments'!

But with that in-mind, for me, the term 'wardrobe investment', speaks to me of having an item that gives great happiness to look at, to use, that elevates both an outfit and a mood. For me, my $300 Danier leather jacket has been a wardrobe investment, even though it would not be worth $300 now if I were to resell it. I wear it with so many things, dressy and casual, and I always feel like it adds a level of luxury and beauty to whatever I am wearing.

Staysfit, I feel that, based upon your words, the Ferragamo purse would give you that same sort of long-lasting enjoyment. If you can afford this purchase - i.e., this wouldn't put you in debt, or leave you short of funds for your everyday life (food, utilities, roof over your head)... then yes. You should purchase this bag. Try and get as much detailed information as you can from Ferragamo about how to condition, protect and clean this bag.

What I think nobody can afford to do, is settle for something that is a distant second. The D&B bags are nice enough, but they can't hold a candle to the Ferragamo.

It's so elegant and such a nice size for you, I can see why it speaks to you. The leather looks like lace. I'm also drawn to this shape of bag and to the Ferragamo bags in general, for their classic lines and the simple beauty of their hardware.
Beyond my admiration of the bag, though, given what you've said here, it seems like a very reasonable contender for your milestone gift to yourself.

Staysfit everyone has brought up excellent points. My biggest concern with the bag is the perforations would catch dirt and be hard to clean. But I live in a dry and dusty part of the world :-)!

Unfrumped, what you've said is so true. I don't have the answers, but I do like to consider the issues just like you. I too feel uncomfortable wearing things that cost a lot of money, because many around me at uni can't afford to eat whatever they want, let alone buy expensive things. I want to be considerate to them and I guess I like anonymity too. Perhaps it's an issue that we have to figure out for ourselves depending on where we are in life?

The judging will always happen, as you said. Sad but true. If I'm going to be judged, I'd rather it be my thoughts and professional acumen that is judged than my clothes, so that's why anonymous works for me.

Dimity, I like your points.
Displaying something that cost a lot bothers me. I really want all my items to be " anonymous".Yet, as I mentioned, I or anyone else might have spent as much of more on a total outfit as someone else might sink into a handbag. What's the difference?

One fabber who was especially good at bargain- hunting for higher- end name brands felt she took flack for her " expensive" tastes. Yet she couldn't spend her life explaining, I got this for
only $__.
So is it how much you spend, or how others perceive what you've spent, or whether its in one item or spread out over many ( 20 separate outfits+ a
basic purse vs. 5-10 outfits and a designer bag).
And still none of that of that can tell you in any way what kind of person is under that.
Anyway, these odd ideas interest me in the sense of the problems of trying to judge books by their covers but also realizing that will happen anyway.

I am so torn over this question. One the one hand, it's delightful to celebrate craftsmanship and quality materials and enjoy the best we can afford. On the other, if it were me, would it make me feel uncomfortable when I visit friends or relatives? Or even just walking along the street? Is this the image that I want to portray as my contribution to the world?

I'm certainly not begrudging anyone the idea of a gorgeous bag that takes your fancy. I'm simply raising a theoretical question. It's absolutely fine to support and promote quality artisanal goods, and in fact, it can do the planet good if we adopted a 'slow fashion' attitude where we cherish and appreciate the goods we own rather than seeking to constantly replace them with new and better.

I think perhaps I'd feel comfortable with this bag for myself if I was certain that the company was ethical, that it valued its craftsmen and women, had sound production methods and that I would be happy to use the bag for many years.

I don't want to make you or anyone else feel uneasy about your choices, so please consider this not as a judgement but as an alternative viewpoint to consider and discard as you see fit. It's really a comment about how we vote for the world we want with the money we have.

You sound like you have a well-developed appreciation for art and for "nice things". I know that simplifies the idea, but I hope you know what I mean. I had a thought while reading your last comments here : why don't you look into having a bag custom -made? It was your comments about art and the losses you have experienced recently that got me thinking that you might get a huge sense of personal satisfaction and appreciation for having something made just for you. Can you imagine how special it would be to have a bag that you created - that is one of a kind, and made of absolutely the best materials by the best craftsmen? You clearly have the income to use for something like this, and what a great gift to yourself that would be. Just thinking........

So many good things to think about....

Thistle, I have to agree with you, and you have added a new level of clarity to my thinking. You are so correct that none of my handbags are truly investments. They have not gone up in value. They would have no monetary worth if I were to sell them, and the same is true of this bag. Amazing how much desire can muddle ones thinking! This would definitely not be an investment in the classic sense. I believe a more accurate way to describe my thinking would be in terms of cost per wear. The initial cost impact of an item which seems high at first will decrease over time if that item lasts and is useful for many years. I think my handbags fall into the category of being items which were high priced, but also long lived and with high utility over time. Perhaps a white perforated leather bag will not stand up well to this standard?

Karymk, your question is a good one. I am certain I could fall for something and then lose my interest. I am not counting on this bag to make me happy. I think the belief that an object will create happiness carries a great risk of many difficulties, included among them would be loss of interest in the object and then seeking out another to try and find that happiness again. I want to say that objects are simply objects however I know this is oversimplification. There are some objects that capture and hold my interest more than others. I have favorite pieces of artwork, that have always been my favorites. When I go to the museum, I always go to look at my favorite paintings. I never tire of them. I have paintings in my house that I picked because I love them. I have never tired of them. Do you tire of your artwork? My DD struggles with this all the time. There are two types of art, aesthetic and conceptual. Where they intertwine is where the most interest comes into play for me.

At the same time, I believe that experiences and relationships are the key to my happiness. Something that functions well and that adds ease to my life can also create happiness. When thinking about this handbag, it will blend the beautiful aesthetic with something functional. It will hold my belongings, it will be carried by me, it will go where I go. It will become weathered, and of course it will never stay clean. I know that's impossible. It will get stained and dirty. It will develop more character and personality the more I use it. This is what I love about my older bags. They develop a patina.

Ummlila, I have looked at this same bag in a different color also. It happens to be a solid leather, not perforated, but it isn't calling to me like this bag.

Jenendad, , I looked in the Kendall Farr book, and this shape is not there, however, neither are the bags which I have kept and used for many years, so I am not overly worried about that.

I need to think whether there is something else I would rather do with that money. My attitude towards money has shifted greatly since my best friend and brother in law both died. They were both in their late forties. I witnessed first hand that even if you work hard and save, you may not be there to make use of that savings. I still save money, but I am definitely more willing to spend on something I want rather than reserving for only items I need.

I've admired the purple solid leather version of this bag a few times passing by the Ferragamo store in Boston. I really like the rounded lines and the shape of the clasp.

I am a big handbag fan -- I don't have tons but I'm picky about them -- but I find that it's difficult to tell how much you will wear a bag before you start carrying it around. I have bags I coveted for months, and then didn't like as much as I expected to, and then others thst were spur of the moment that became favorites.

What everyone said, plus, one can still use math even in " heart" situations.
I tend to feel some guilt about splurges if I think I'm just adding on to lots of other items, vs. if I can cut back or day this one instead of x others or will be more frugal in some other way. Of course this is still in the context of being blessed with having disposable income.

That doesn't necessarily apply to milestone purchases, but is a way I think of how it's not really possible to evaluate a single expenditure; some people gasp at a handbag and yet
drive more expensive cars, or dine out, or maybe buy several other items that add up. NOT saying you have to make accommodations, but just that this is all on the continuum of fashion "Wants" , quality, happiness bang for the buck and different ways to get there.
I could see you carrying this bag over 100 days of the year, for years. Can you? Also my main question about an expensive " happiness" bag is whether it's durable-- color and all- because I would want to use it and not keep it for special occasions only.

I think the pattern is lovely. One consideration that springs to mind as to it's longevity is that it is white leather, which in my experience tends to pick up dust, dirt and dye from clothing it rubs against quite easily. I'd think or ask about how it can be cleaned and preserved, especially if you want to use it often.

Well, I'm a handbag girl, so I get it. BUT,and this us a big but, a handbag is not an investment, it's more like a car. It's going to lose its value the minute you drive it off the lot. If you treat it right, you may still be using it in 20 years, but let's be honest, you may not be,because your heart may belong to a newer model. So the real question is,do you love this more then what ever else you would have used the money for?

Staysfit, this is tough! Do you ever go cold on the items that you just had to have? Do you love "things" forever?

I just turned 50 and I opted for jewelry over a bag. But to me, jewelry is for milestones, and if purses are how you mark your own then maybe you should get the bag. I figure the jewelry is easier to hand down to my daughter. She snorts at my handbag taste.

On your 50th, I think you should feel like a QUEEN! Will this bag do that?

What Gaylene said!

All clothes and shoes and handbags are consumable (not investments - sorry, accountant here.)

The question is will the enjoyment you get from the item be worth the price? Only you can answer that.

I bought a Brahmin bag years ago. I loved it at first sight and hemmed and hawed for 3 months before I finally bought it. I have never regretted it as I still love it and still carry it all the time. Not at the same price point, I know, but it was the most expensive clothing item I had ever bought at the time.

It's a lovely bag and, since you can afford it, it's really up to you to decide if this bag belongs in your wardrobe. This might sound funny, but my only hesitation is your hesitation.

Your Coach story sounds so similar to my own Coach purchase way back in the 80s--such an extravagant, impulsive purchase for me at that time but I adored that bag and still happily carry it three decades laters. But, maybe, you aren't feeling that same sense of certainty about this purchase?

Your question is a perfect example of why I am trying to wipe the word "investment" from my wardrobe. It's perfectly fine, in my books, to splurge on consumables, especially when we reach milestones in our lives. A fantastic dinner, a special vacation, a piece of clothing--all are transitory, but provide us with a great of pleasure and fond memories. If this bag is a consumable which gives you a great deal of pleasure to own for a few years, can you be happy with that?

One word Staysfit.....gorgeous. There are three statements that are most important to my eye....great hair, great shoes and a great bag...even if basic items go in between. I think everyone should receive a very special and memorable 50th birthday gift and from what you have said, this is what you'd love. Indulge yourself, savour it through the years and have a wonderful birthday.

It's a stunning bag and would add interesting texture to a simple outfit. I don't think the DandB is anywhere close. Another thought though, have you seen the LK Bennett bag that Angie has? It's called the Rosie, and it's also a gorgeous style with great detail. They don't have many stores in the US but the website is good if you wanted to check it out.

As someone who has always seen bags as strictly utilitarian, this is a yen I don't completely understand. (I am only now, years into my YLF membership, coming to recognize how much they can add to an outfit. What can I say? I am a slow learner, it seems...)

Staysfit - I can only relate this to a comment Angie made about the valentino rockstuds....in your case, this is jewelry for your arm and shoulder. I have never seen anything like that bag before - gorgeous, unique, timeless, it's truly a functional piece of art. Question, if this was a piece of jewelry would you be okay with the expense? It seems from what you have said that handbags are your "touchstone." Honestly, in many ways, more practical than gold or pearls. I will tell you I bought the rockstuds. I had a big event and I never get shoe lust, honestly never, but sometimes a piece feeds are hearts and our souls. I get the same vibe from you with this bag. If you have the money for it and really adore it, I think you would be very happy with the purchase. PS you could wear burlap sacking and it would look couture with that bag on your arm!! Good luck but a big yeah from me!!
