Echo, the disgust quiz explanation includes a note that people who are exposed in their daily life to “disgusting” things will have falsely low scores. Thanks for the list of surprising things that are correlated with political affiliation. I was trying to remember them, but you clearly did it better.

Lisa P, I’d love hear your thoughts on ignorant fashion consumers sometime.

The idea that there is no one in these huge businesses that is supposed to look out for this sort of thing (or is fired if they mention it!) is appalling. I am looking at you too Zara and others. I have always liked Miuccia Prada's designs and admired her intellectualism, and this really saddens me. I won't say shocks me though.

Fashintern: You are absolutely right, that brand association is often indicative of political affiliation. Interestingly, many times religion (or at least religiosity), attitude toward authority, preferred music and car brands, pet ownership, alcohol consumption (as well as types and brands of alcohol), and even entertainment preferences can also indicate political leanings. In light of things like this, it is easier to understand why mere political discussion or argument does very little to change a person's mind, regardless of which side of the aisle they prefer.

Interestingly, DH took the quiz and it told him his brain leaned heavily Democratic. He was surprised because although he has voted Democratic for the last number of elections, he considers himself Republican. In his mind, he sees the "disgust" factor as it applies to blue collar vs white collar. He says that the farmers he works with have a very high threshold for feeling disgust because they work with animals and the land and all the things that go with it on a daily basis. They aren't squeamish people, but they are strongly conservative. And he's right, but the people who can generally be depended on to vote are the white, middle-upper class, middle-aged and up demographic, and the disgust factors would likely apply to them much more preferentially as far as voting goes.

Miuccia Prada's own history and upbringing is steeped in nationalism and racis - she's notoriously NOT the nicest, kindest person. There aren't a lot of complementary articles about her in fashion journalism. Stuff like this makes me sick, because you know there are ignorant, fashion consumers (lots to say about that but won't ) who will be buying these pieces just because they are new pieces from a prestige brand. Barf. I am reminded time and again to be more thoughtful and informed when buying clothes and accessories these days - not that I'm buying at this level, but I do have 2 Prada bags I'm now giving the side-eye.

I file this stuff under the category of "willful ignorance." There really is no excuse in this day and age for someone who works in design (whose job it is to COMMUNICATE and have an appreciation for the context of history) to put this kind of stuff out without expecting backlash. Is it a combination of younger employees who are not educated in these broader subjects (just think they're being cool and creative?) plus older ones who don't care and are completely disconnected from the broader implications of their decisions? Whatever the case, I find it eye-rolling to just say, "ah, we just thought it was a fun innocent design."

KM, I strongly agree with you that people in the fashion industry have a responsibility to know the history of trends and what they have been associated with. Those things don’t function at a conscious level, but they do influence people. If you’re designing or promoting a fashion, you need to know what subconscious preferences it calls on.

Echo, your reply reminded me of the studies mentioned here: https://www.google.com/amp/s/w.....-brain/amp
And here https://www.google.com/amp/s/w.....html%3famp
There have been lots of studies about various things that seemingly have no connection to politics—what kind of booze you like, how you dress, what kind of music you like—can accurately be used to predict your political party. I wonder if the designers you mention care that you and I won’t buy their products, and are happy to have customers who like the things we find disgusting. Certainly, and sadly, there is a large and growing group of people, in many countries, who think racist imagery is ok or entertaining.

Janet, thanks for posting this.

This is why learning history is important, including the history of images! People are not always trained in how to "read" objects, their meanings, and their history. It would be great for the public at large to be more informed, regardless of where people live or come from. And to me it is imperative for designers working for one of the world's most influential brands to be aware of this history. Claiming ignorance or lack of intention (something so hard to prove) is absolutely NO EXCUSE for Prada, especially since a lot of this imagery works subliminally (making me think the racism is really ingrained in their minds).

Angie, that “weird looking ‘fantasy creature’” was extremely popular as a children’s toy. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golliwog
and of course people still fight against “fun” imagery using extremely dark black face and overly large, bright red lips every year when Swarte Piet shows up for a few weeks.
It’s not an innocent image. Even someone who didn’t know of those two precidents, or of minstrelsy shows that used exactly those features, perhaps with big butts added, can recognize that they are the features most commonly referred to in any racist grotesque.
Being the extremely pragmatic fellow he is, my son simply wondered why these companies don’t have someone like an editor whose job it would be to check stuff before it goes public.

I am definitely NOT the sort of person who looks for reasons to be offended, nor am I particularly "politically correct." Then again, I have that luxury, never having been labeled the "other". But these images are blatant, in-your-face racist. There's simply no other way they can be perceived (in the US, at least). It is clear that there is no one non-white in the hierarchy, advertising or promotion areas of Prada. I actually LIKED Prada, but this sickens me.

So D&G is not only racist, but also homophobic. Prada is racist. Oh, and Karl is a misogynist pig (not to mention the associations of Coco with Nazis), which leaves Chanel off the list, too. Fortunately, the designer of the items I DO buy has not yet been implicated...

Anchie, I understand what you are saying. However, the truth of the matter is, this was a display in the USA, in New York City, and for anyone to think this was a good idea, they would have to have been willfully blind of the implications of that kind of imagery. Here in the states, with our history of slavery and oppression, it is inexcusable that no one working in a major fashion house and retailer would notice that this kind of “character” evokes old stereotypical racist imagery.

I am not trying to defend them but I must admit, being from different culture and having different history, I did not have racist associations at all. But looking at the comparison pictures I can see the resemblance. On the other hand things that would offend me is probably something that you have no idea about and would not recognize as offensive too. Hope I am not crossing the line here What I am trying to say is that not everyone has the same association to the same things.
