I think that those who are in the fashion world do eventually get off the "crazy ride" and develop a timeless style. Some see boring, I see fashion nirvana. Fashion is also about the confidence to allow the self to be the statement. Actually, that's where I am heading.

That was a great link and totally inspired me to put on an Altfit for the day. I have to say though that even though she sticks to a uniform in many ways, I find the details, such as her belt, shoes, shoulder line, etc. are always updated so that the impression is of-the-minute.

bj11111, your argument is sound. I put Anna Della Russo (sporting all the trends at once, all the time, and often for show) on the opposite end of the extreme to Alt. I like the way you used the adjective "militant" with the word uniform. That's spot on! I guess I feel protective of Alt. I love that she is the opposite of Della Russo because it encourages style diversity (two very influential top magazine editors with polar opposite styles). I am a big advocate of respecting style diversity as you know, so I hope that makes sense too. I'm not criticizing Russo either! We need style like hers represented in the fashion world.

We also need to see Karl in a Chanel jacket :)......and I do try to walk my talk.

Great discussion!!

I don't mind her uniform at all. And now I think maybe I've been using one of my own. But the mini mes are really weird. They represent the part about fashion that I don't like... the part that is about conformity and falling in line instead of nurturing an individual look. If I was a scarily-powerful fashion mogul, I think I'd view a subordinate dressing like me as a sign of low creativity levels.

Angie, i totally get that being submerged in fashion can lead to cycling through the trends so quickly--in my mind i put anna della rosso in this group--or one can go the other way and and be almost militant about one's uniform.

My comment is not a criticism of alt but my intrinsic reaction to the slight disconnect between the trends in her magazine and her strict uniform that i don't perceive as being present in designers that have a uniform of their own designs.

I don't perceive this disconnect in you as trend curator, because i see you incorporating trends in a way that expresses your core style at that moment as you encourage ylf'ers to. So, to me, you walk the talk.

That was great, thank you for posting. I still feel a bit "outsider looking in" about fashion, so it was a funny to see someone take the piss a bit. But I do also appreciate the value of a uniform, especially for a busy woman in the public eye. It's amazing she can do this and still be a fashion icon. I know some designers have their uniforms as Angie mentioned, but aren't they known more for their designs than their own outfits?

bj11111, when you eat/sleep/drink fashion as your job - you actually can become a LOT more discerning with the trends that you want to partake in. Think of all these famous designers who have been wearing the same uniform for years: Karl Lagerfeld, Jason Wu, Alexander Wang, Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera, Donna Karen, Calvin Klein - are the ones that spring to mind. I TOTALLY get why they don't stray from their only FFBOs!! I have an element to my style that is a nod to this phenomenon too. In a sea of HECTIC FASHION IN YOUR FACE ALL THE TIME - you love your distinctive uniform because it is soothing and refreshing. Doesn't mean you don't love the trends on others :)

I like her style, Emmanuelle Alt. I really don't get bored with it. I probably default to her look half the week. Not that you could tell. Because of colour and pattern, I am Disneyland to her Paris (and ok, let's just avoid the subject of Disney Paris because that's too weird, ok?).

One of the big bosses in my office also kinda defaults to Altfit all the time too, and also looks totally different. Less fancy and more sporty for some reason. Maybe it's that she doesn't have rock n' roll hair the way Emmanuelle does.

The hench girls do give a person pause tho. The legion of mini-me's *is* awkward and somewhat humiliating. There may have to be rule, like for hipsters and shrunken fedoras: only one Altfit per gathering at a time...

angie, i do like her fidelity and how she interprets trends within her uniform. a uniform is liberating especially in her position. she, like wintour, acts as true north for the fashion compass, but i'm conflicted about taking fashion directive from a woman who does not largely unaffected by trends in silhouette, color, etc. sort of like a chef who won't eat his own cooking.

kkards, i appreciate that nuances of detail that make her uniform really appealing. tho like deborah, i need a bit more variety.

missvee, seeing her photos massed together is what made me notice both the distinctive detail in and the overwhelming sameness of each outfit.

denise, i see a lot of alt in your silhouette. your execution is different but i feel that you have a uniform that suits you and you are very loyal in a great "i know what i like" sort of way without stagnating.

Perhaps the reason so many of us love Alt style (me included) is because she does not stray from her uniforms. Her style is extremely distinctive and she is so at ease with it all. Natural chic at its best - as tomboy as it is ladylike. MODERN. Alt is unaffected by trends to some extent, and as the Editor in Chief of French Vogue - THAT is liberating.

Ha, I just procrastinated on a submission job to read all the goss on Racked. I had noticed before that all her hench-girls were dressing like her. They are not cutting it like her though. Her basic self is imposing and her carriage is nonchalant. I wonder is she irritated or gleeful of the failing comparisons.
She is worth the crush but flirting is fine. Cheers

Very funny especially the part about mini-mes! She is not one of the first people that come to mind if I think about high fashion crushes and I think that article pretty much explains why. On the other hand, I do prefer her iconic look to Anna Wintour's by a wide margin.

Ooh thanks for that I really dig Alt's style. I do know what you mean though about seeing the same thing over and over, but on the other hand she looks great in it. Wish I could look like that (oh and wouldnt mind having her job either!)

It's OK to stray from your crush once n a while. You're only human. We all need our FFBO's. Clever article.
